Providing opportunities for women to get into filmmaking? That's pretty awesome.

Twilight as the subject matter? Not so much.

Hey, now the Twilight fandom gets to experience the joy of tearing themselves apart arguing about which version is better.

I hope this simply won't become a bitching thread.

Anyway, glad a woman is having more opportunities. About Meyer, well... you know what I think.

[up]Popcorn passing will ensue.

I actually hope this thing is successful. Goodness knows that women are woefully underrepresented at the highest levels of Hollywood's production, direction, scripting and casting cadres and this might end up changing that.

Tying it to Twilight is smart - those films made billions at the box office, and as I am forever pointing out to people who seem determined to contradict me, that's the only barometer of success Hollywood pays attention to.

While I dislike Twilight setting them in that universe is not inherently bad. If Meyer's influence is kept in check they could make some really interesting films.

Twilight does have the most entries on They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character...

But I'd have been happier if they did this with Star Wars. Or Harry Potter note .It can be directed by a woman if it's a chick flick but "universal stories for all generations", gotta be a dude, right?

But yeah, yeah, baby steps and all that, Tam is right and besides, films targeted at women is also important for the audience of women.

[up][up]Agreed. My wife was explaining to me just how much of a stacked deck Meyer's vampires get and I was like "They would make amazing horror movie villains."

[up]Yep they would. Since they're basically copies of Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles" neck-biters with the serial numbers filed off and lots more angst added to the mix. If you read her early books in particular, those are scary mo-fos.

Someone's bound to have written fanfiction where Meyer's and Rice's vamps meet up and discuss stuff.

The issues I have is that, sure, while it has good ambitions and intentions in getting more attention for female directors, but twilight of all things? The book series infamous for its POORLY written female characters and general inability in understanding plot conflict resolution?

I get the feeling it could create more damage than it will solve. Harry Potter would BY FAR be a better choice for this instead of twilight since there's so much more of a believable and easily explorable world there. There's so many points of that series' story and history that fans have been asking questions about.

Twilight? Do I care about their idea of Vampires in the Civil War? I can barely get myself to care enough to watch a single film because the writing is such a horrible eye sore so how could I possibly get interested in Civil War!twilight?

[up]Again, if Meyer's influence is minimized I think they can do some interesting things. Being in the universe of the films doesn't mean they have to be exactly like them.

Promoting women... by making a film based on a book that presents emotional abuse as romantic.

Yeah. Great job.

I dunno. Maybe this will be good. I hope so. But damn if they couldn't have chosen better source material.

[up][up]The chances of any female director taking this up and not being a twihard following the undertones of the books and films to the letter is pretty damn slim in my eyes.

And if they weren't, Executive Meddling would likely force a strong thematic connection to the previous films.

Looking for some stories?

[up]Exactly. It will be forced to tie directly into the films in some meaningful way. I just... There's so much inherently wrong with twilight that its horrible its related to an inherently feminist film concept.

I'm not a fan of Twilight but if I was a director I could see myself taking it.

Then again, all I really know first hand is that the Twilight movies were poorly acted, I haven't sat through a single one all the way through. Maybe my stance would change if I had watched it, but I have not. Existing characters? I would say "Tell me the rules about the vampires and werewolves, I'll come up with setting, plot and character from there." You know, not everyone who continues a franchise is a fan of it, in fact, Running the Asylum is rarer than people on this wiki seem to think.

I'm aware of the fact Breaking Dawn sucked even by Twilight standards, that "The last one sucked!" will draw fans with an aim to "correct" that faster than fire draws moths, but since this is not the opportunity to "fix" breaking dawn, I doubt we'll see a high influx of fan directors.

At first, I was dissapointed in Twilight's inability to die.

Then, I got dissapointed that the panel of advisers includes Meyer and Stewart. The rest of the panel I've not even heard of, except for Winslet, and the last movie I saw her in was Titanic.

Except for one. And that one woman shot my opinion of this from "Oh god why won't it die" to "Let this woman give most of the advice, and we may actually get something decent".
Jennifer Lee. Writer of the brilliant Wreck It Ralph, and Writer/Director (and first female director of a Disney Animated Film) of Frozen.

If anyone should be promoting women in the movie industry, and deep female characters in general, it's Jennifer Lee.

So, I tenatively approve of this venture. Hopefully something good will come of it.

What's interesting is that Kristen Stewart is a good actor.

But Bella Swan is a horrible character.

Actuall, I've heard that since she took on the role of Bella, her acting has taken a nosedive, even in other films.

[up]Because a lot of directors are probably thinking 'This is that girl in those twilight films, which make a ton of money, so whatever she's doing in that role is obviously working' and its not.

twilight has some good actors, they're just giving such absolute shit material.

Maybe she needs to get cast as a voiceover role. That might get her to remember how to act.

[up]Or, simply, a lot of actors find a better calling in Voice Acting. Voice Acting is fun too. You can show up to work in P Js and your hair in a mess for all they care.
