Whoa, Genndy Tartakovsky was trained by a Popeye animator?
Wow, you really do learn something new every day, don't you?
Anyhow, I hope this turns out well. And I guess I speak for a lot of people when I say I hope they keep the amount of celebrities to a minimum. Tom Kenny does a pretty good Popeye voice IMO.
Also, I inputted the video for the sake of convenience.
Great work! If any modern animator can do justice to Popeye, it'd be him.
Looking for some stories? That was Tom Kenny as Popeye and Grey Delisle as Olive.
I really enjoyed the animation and I wish to see it in theaters soon. If Sony is up to this, than that also gives me hope for Lauren Faust's Medusa.
"YOU FILTHY SWINE!!! I WILL KEEEEL YOU!!!...that animation test was pretty much perfect.
based genndy, will watch, etc.
I hope that they are also making progress with the samurai jack movie.

Fun, cartoony, and definitely captures the charm of the cartoons
I'm excited
Supports cartoons being cartoony! It's kinda heartwarming to see how far genndy has come. i would have never imagined he'd go from dexter's lab to directing a big budget animated film with a big name like popeye.
As long as this makes us forget about that awkward live-action film, i'm all in for it!
in the meantime, i'm going to enjoy playing this actually great Japanese released only Popeye SNES game.

That is some sweet old-school slapstick.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectHmm, some kind of board game basis? That "BLOW ME DOWN" flies out so fast, I misread it as "BLOW ME DEMON" at first.
Eh, seems alright. Who is the cat creature?
in the animation test?
That's Eugene. And he's not a cat. He's a jeep.
No seriously, in the world of Popeye, there's a creature known quite literally as a jeep.
And he is also likely the inspiration for the name of the vehicle.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectHere's the bad news, though; Stephen Destefano, who has worked on the film, said on his facebook that Popeye won't be having his pipe, tattoos or traditional outfit, so far as we know. They were going to use his original King Features design, but management thought Popeye would look too old and unappealing for today's audiences, so they softened up his appearance and outfit considerably, kindof like what Famous Studios did to Popeye in the 40's and 50's. Curiously, they brought back Popeye's red hair from the early E.C. Segar comics.

Minor, but still annoying that they think that.
I'm guessing they balked at the idea of the hero smoking a pipe and sporting tattoos.
Looking for some stories?@Jeep: Cool! I thought it was a new character they added to appeal to kids.
@different look for Popeye: Awww. Oh, well.
On a side note, I heard somewhere that a Blu-ray set of the color Famous Popeye shorts is in the works, but it's on hold so they can release it alongside this movie as a tie-in. Given they've already gotten all of the Fleischer shorts and the B&W Famous shorts on DVD, I'm happy to hear this—some of the 40's Popeyes are surprisingly good, especially the ones Jim Tyer worked on. I only hope the original B&W shorts get a Blu-ray release alongside it as well.
I was going to say that while I'm normally not a fan of Genndy Tartakovsky's style, the animation test here actually had me interested in this movie.
However, if they really feel a need to ax the tattoos and his pipe (the outfit doesn't really look that bad), I don't think I'll bother with it after all.
Yeah, smoke on that, management.
I'm also hoping that Olive has less damsel in distress scenes.
To be fair, tattoos are kinda not good for kids to have and underage smoking is really not okay. And I guess there are some kids who might really have the attention span of a pack of goldfish and think "Ooo, if I get tattoos and start smoking, I'll be a great hero!"
On the plus side, it's possible that this could make the movie an Origin Story. Doesn't that sound fun?

I would like that.
Now that was a gorgeous piece of amination. Judging from that short clip and all the concept art, this movie looks like it'll be a real treat for the eyes!
Also, the Huffington Post said that this will in fact be a look at Popeye's younger years. I think they even said the movie might explain how Popeye got his famous anchor tattoos.
An animation test for Genndy's upcoming Popeye feature has just been released. Very cartoony and in tune with the series. It's nice to know Genndy was trained by one of the original Popeye animators, too. I'm really looking forward to this.
