I thought it was 'swabbies'?
But yeah, I'm in this as well, I guess. Really this whole thing came around when I said the word "Pirates" and everyone just collective nodded their head in modest acceptance. Don't have much in the way of anything besides the Framing Device(?), so we're open for both suggestions and criticisms of said suggestions.
I don't have much to suggest, but I had the urge to listen to the Pirates of the Caribean theme earlier today, so I'll take that as a sign!
Told you guys I was up for it. As for worldbuilding... What kind of pirate adventure is it going to be?
I was thinking something among the lines of a pirate crew going on their merry, booty-acquiring adventures. Perhaps something of a greater adventure even, but I'm not too sure at the moment.
It would definitely be your classical, cutlass-toting pirates, but I was thinking of adding classical pirate fantasy among the lines of mermaids, Flying Dutchman, voodoo and the likes. I wouldn't be above a fantasy world either.
grahSomeone mentioned over the the RP Discussions thread thing that if there were to be a pirate-themed roleplay that it'd be best for it not to follow the Piratesofthe Carribean example. I personally don't remember the movies all that much, but I was hoping for something a little low-key. Like, yeah, swashbucklin' and pirating is good and all, but I'd rather it not be swamped by bigger things.
However, I don't have anything against there being your usual sea-faring mythos, and maybe some mild magics thrown in to spice things up without making them too complicated.

But what would a pirate adventure be without bigger things? There's always got to be a bigger plot to tie all the booty together
I've got new mythological machinery, and very handsome supernatural scenery. Goodfae: a mafia web serialMaybe low-level magic? (^__^')
Well, yeah, there'd certainly be something to form an actual basis for the RP, but right now I think we're a little more focused on setting up what and where it'll exactly take place and such.
I'm kind of new to this, so uh, tell me if anything's out of place.
I'm thinking something among the lines of "we don't have magic, but what we face - certainly". I think it would fit the theme of classical corny swashbucklers fighting with giant squids and skeleton pirates and what not. ^_^
grahNot saying magic would be all that common. It's there, you just need to know the right people/have the right things/be in the right places to actually acquire it. Not to say that there even needs to be magic beyond pirate lore stuff.
So, are we going for a certain time or place? Or is it going to be "generic pirate setting?"
If possible, I'd vote for the latter, since we can evolve it beyond that.
grahPersonally I would prefer a fantasy setting rather than a historical one although I will play either.
Trump delenda estWhat will this RP's stance be on female pirates? What about combat? Are pirates going to be superhuman like One Piece, or is this going to be a "take five minutes to reload your flintlock pistol and an hour to sharpen your sword" kind of pirate story?
I've got new mythological machinery, and very handsome supernatural scenery. Goodfae: a mafia web serialFemale pirates would probably go over okay, though that's up for any discussion.
Combat, not too sure, and I was originally thinking about having it be the latter, but with some oddities thrown in.
I want to be a skeleton pirate.
Flesh is a design flaw....That's the exact thing you said when they first brought this up.
I'd reckon a normal pirate Captain wouldn't hire a skeleton, and most pirate crews would try to shoot it's head out of a cannon. But we don't discriminate, so you can have your skeleton pirate. If we decide that's okay.
Considering whipping up a siren. As for female pirates, that's definitely something that Assassin's Creed 4 got right, so I say yes whether we go more One Piece or Pirates of the Caribbean.
Forward, boys! For God's sake, forward!Alright, chalk me up for the Lad-ette. How are we gonna decide who's captain and such?
I've got new mythological machinery, and very handsome supernatural scenery. Goodfae: a mafia web serialRegarding combat, I suppose it would probably be the latter. Maybe not as bad as you portray, KSPAM - we want people to have fun, after all - but likely this.
But since our crew would include skeleton pirates, that remains to be seen.
As for the captain, I assume either Truth or me will take this role with another being a First Mate.
grahAm thinking ship's doctor/alchemist who is a semi-retired assassin from North Africa or the fantasy world equivalent. Since we're going to have an animated skeleton as a crewmate I take it, yes, fantasy setting albeit apparently Low Fantasy?
Trump delenda estMight try a Scandanevian dude who thinks he's a Viking, not a Pirate.
I suppose that would be the case although perhaps it would be a bit more idealistic than a typical low fantasy setting. Maybe even a bit corny, since we're pirates and all. ^_^;
As for the alchemist guy, he sounds pretty good in my book.
I like the idea, but how would he get incorporated into a pirate crew in such case?
grah
Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Me and Truthhurts 22 decided to give this a shot, because hey, why not?
As it stands, the whole concept doesn't have much more than "yarr!" attached to it, so we're very much open for suggestions in building this world of seamen. If you're interested in joining this merry crew here, we welcome all aboard. :)
