There was that one episode of the Powerpuff Girls where they weren't let into a superhero group because they were girls. The group was all male and eventually the Powerpuff Girls defeated each member.

[up][up]There is very, very little, if any. Female pronouns are used (as is gendered language like mom) and (presumably) heterosexual males are attracted to them and that's kinda it. There's a few comments here and there and one of them being a mother in the biological sense is very significant but otherwise it mostly isn't.

Notable context for anyone who cares: The gems in Steven Universe, one of which was in that weird strip someone linked to, are sentient shapeshifting gemstones who use female pronouns and are treated as female by humans.

I haven't watched it yet but generalizing I think it's fine if there is some noticeably emphasis on her being female if it's handled well and not the only important part of her character. Some emphasis on, say, whether people treat her and Superman differently because of gender despite both being superheroes, would be alright.

Dean Cain

Oh, he's from Lois & Clark, that's why I don't recognize him. I've been told that series was worth watching if you just accept the fact that it's not The Avengers or The Dark Knight and won't be full of snarky-one liners and crazy bad guy philosophies.

Maybe someday, when I'm good and married, I'll sit down and stomach it.

[up] You must accept the fact that Lois & Clark is primarily a campy romantic comedy show. Which they then retooled in Season 2 to be more action-oriented, but really, they shouldn't have bothered, because a) the special effects were always terrible and b) the romantic comedy was always more interesting than the fights.

I mean, it's super campy as hell, but it's enjoyable if you keep that in mind.

It's also the best characterized version of Clark Kent outside the comics. Imo it's worth it just for how well they nailed his personality.

Funny.

  • In Superman the Animated Series, Lex Luthor had a darker complexion (this was actually my first introduction to the character, and I thought Lex Luthor actually was black in the comics) and a baritone voice.
  • In Smallville, Pete Ross was made into a black character.
  • In Supergirl, Jimmy Olsen becomes James Olsen, Kara's cool, black coworker.
  • In Superman Doomsday, Superman wears a black suit, distinguishing himself the Superman clone.
  • Man of Steel gets a sequel with Batman in it, who wears a black suit.
  • The wikipedia article for Batman vs Superman uses a black, italic font.
  • Bonus round: In Superman vs The Elite, the main antagonist is Manchester Black.

Well anyway, I thought the Pete Ross and James Olson thing was an odd coincidence.

That is funny, especially since both are pale redheads in the comics.

Thinking about it now, the Legion of Superheroes would be the perfect way to remove Superman from the equation, and like, triple the tension.

Yes, but if you decide not to watch it because you want to avoid spoilers, why would you watch new trailers?

The trailers are official releases, while the pilot was leaked without the production company's permission. Not everyone's comfortable with exploiting illegal behavior like that.

Re: episode leak vs trailers. People probably put a lot of work into designing trailers and building suspense for a new series/episode. To just plop the new episode unceremoniously into our laps and say "Beeteedubs, I stole this for you" kills half the fun and renders their work moot. Dick move. I'll have no part in it.

Hearing stuff like that matters to lots of women, especially young girls. So even if you find it unecessary, it's still a valid sentiment.

[up][up]Well, since I live in europe I'm not gonna see it on TV anytime soon anyway. Might as well watch the leek.

Seriously, if there was a way to get the shows I want to watch and maybe even movies legally I would totally try it. And before you go with some of the streaming services availible, let me tell you that in Germany you get mostly german dubs and I want the original ones. Also, some channels have exclusive rights to some shows (and will usually show them dubbed half a year or a year later), which means that there is no chance to get those via streaming legally.

[up]Yeah, I looked into the Netflix offer since they started here, but as far as I can tell, they don't even show their own shows at the same time as in the US (and in English). It's frustrating. The upside is that so far, it is legal in Germany to stream something on your comp, no matter the source. The upload or permanent download is illegal. But honestly, why it is so difficult to set up a totally legal service which would allow me to watch the TV show I want the day they air? It is high time to reform the whole system (and get rid of the regions) to fit into the internet age.

And in the case of the Supergirl pilot, considering the high quality of it I would be very surprised if it hasn't been a deliberate leak.

Plus....CW and CBS had a couple of pilots leaked in similar good quality, for example of The Flash. One would think that they would have found the leak by now otherwise. To me it looks like a marketing strategy. The trailer got a lukewarm response, so they test out how the audience reacts to the whole thing. It's a little bit suspicious that those leaks always happen with controversial properties.
