Discussion Thread[1]

RP Thread[2]

A great empire stretches before you, from the great peaks, all the way to sweeping coastlines dotted with fish-villages and grand ports. From frigid peaks, monster-infested swamps, to magical forests and rolling, verdant plains, these lands have always been rich and plentiful. For thousands of years, it was you and your kind that held absolute domain over this land. Amassing great hoards, feeding on countless beasts, being worshiped, in all of your glory, by the simple and pathetic races. It was your kind that laid claim to anything and anyplace they so desired, with only the desires of your kin to slow you down. The Dragons, the grandest, most magical, most cunning of rulers had little to fear from all but the greatest of the lesser races.

But the millennia have not been kind, as the most ambitious of the lesser races have steadily gained a mastery of the land that could challenge yours. It was a slow thing. Their magics were small and pitiful, but now they call upon the forces of creation for their own ends. Their mud huts have transformed into grand castles. The wandering packs, armed with sharpened sticks, have given way to thousand-man armies, fitted thick plate and powerful weapons. Mortal civilization has steadily pushed back the wilds, claiming it as their own. Stealing it from it's rightful holders. Their heroes and all-powerful wizards have tamed the land, allowing kingdoms to spring up and further dominate the landscape. In time, the dragons became of minor interest to the mortalkin, or worse fanciful tales. Mortals felt they had surpassed the wrath and mastery of dragons and turned their attention upon one another, warring with one another. In time, a great empire was formed, spanning the lands, pushing others, the goblins and giants and other such creatures far away, to make room for...civilization.

The world had fallen from your claws.

But now, the Adilasan Empire sits atop the world, indolent and lazy, as the dragons once did. Meanwhile the dragons have grown wizened and cunning and desperate to reclaim what truly belongs to them. The empire of Man and Elves thinks all it foes defeated, and now can only turn against itself. Their borders lie undefended, their vaults heavy with wealth, and their armies and leaders scheme against one another. The Dwarves have broken free from the empire and now march upon it, seeking vengeance. The wild races rally, driven by ancient grudges to burn the lands. And now, there are no more heroes to stand against the tide. No great wizards, to turn back the dragons. A time of disaster and ruin shall soon fall upon the decadent land.

It's time to carve yourself out a piece.

So, as you can surmise, this is a Dragon RP. Whatever kind of dragon you can think of. The world is changing and it's your opportunity to sit atop it...or at least, a fat pile of gold. This will be set in a high-fantasy setting, with your typical fantasy-type things. I'm holding off on world-building a bit, to let you the players, have a say in shaping the world some.

As dragons, you have a lot of freedom in what kind of force of mass destruction you want to be. Try to keep it somewhere on the Super Weight Scale around...Low Hyper Weight 4. You might not be able to destroy a kingdom on your own, but you could certainly take a good-sized bite out of one. This leans a bit more in the direction of Western-style dragons, but I'll accept more unusual ideas, if they're solid. You want to be a dragon in the style of Smaug? Have at it. You want to be six-legged, four-winged, serpent, that breathes out molten glass? Sounds cool. You want to be a giant burrowing wyrm, with fangs as long as greatswords? Neat. Mostly, just don't half-ass your dragon and I'll give you a fairshake.

*Name: Your Dragon's name. You can keep it simple or you can make it damn-near impossible to pronounce.

*Titles: Kind of an extension of the name thing. You want to have a laundry list of cool titles speaking of your accomplishments, you can have them here. Optional.

*Age: All dragons are fairly old. I'm not really looking for exact years, but more along the lines of 'Young' or 'Ancient' and so forth.

*Gender: Fairly easy one. Though as dragons, you're free to be somewhat more creative if you wish. Male, female, both, neither, or maybe for your dragon it varies.

*Category: Hero, Villain, Neutral. Basically, whether you intend on burning the land to a crisp, guiding the mortal races to a better way, or you have your own goals that aren't particularly good or evil. Mostly, just lets me know where your dragon sits, in the grander scale.

*Appearance: Pictures or Descriptions are both fine. Get creative.

*Personality: Are you personable and talkative or a territorial brute? Curious and erudite, or perhaps you like the idea of injecting a bit of dragonblood into the mortal genepool. I do want more than the bare-bones or something too generic.

*Abilities: Can you fly? Maybe you dwell underwater or burrow through the Earth? Are you huge, even by dragon standards? Do you breath fire or acid? Perhaps your dragon is small, but has studied the ways of magic? Are your scales all but impenetrable? There's plenty of room for cool ideas.

*Weakness: Purely optional. But perhaps you like the idea of having a weak point in your hide, or maybe your dragon is easily manipulated by flattery. Perhaps you're even greedier than your typical dragon.

*Assets: There are two main parts to this category: Your Hoard and your Lair.

While your hoard has grown smaller over the centuries you still hold onto a portion of it. You might hold onto a large quantity of coins, books, gems, or whatever. Perhaps you even have a few neat magical trinkets and the like there, to lure in foolish adventurers. Mostly, this is just to give you a measure of how awesome you are. No one ever talks about the dragons that lie upon great piles of dirt.

Your lair is, obviously, where your dragon resides and keeps his/her/it's stuff. You may want a traditional mountain cave as your lair, or perhaps an underwater grotto. Perhaps you live in a poisonous swamp, or perhaps you dwell amongst a goblin tribe, forcing them to worship you. Maybe you live in a ruined castle or an abandoned dwarven mine, filled with old traps.

Anything else that is yours belongs here. Does your dragon have some primitive tribe enslaved to it's will or perhaps you are a more proactive dragon and you have your own herds of cattle to feed on. Maybe you keep some monsters about your lair to keep people out. Whatever, if it belongs to your dragon, you can include it here.

*Misc.: Any other relevant details you want to include, that might not easily fit into another category.

*History: Your dragon's life till today. Were you around when mortals were still banging rocks together. Maybe you were a hatchling, well-after mortals began conquering the land. Been in any great battles? Perhaps have a legend or two where your made an appearance. Again, get creative.

For now, I'd like to keep things down to a handful of players, say around six or so. I might make exceptions if a lot of good ideas are thrown out there, and I'll probably allow in more players as time wears on. Obviously if players drop out, new players are free to apply.

So, let's see what happens.

I assume a Hero dragon would be the kind who insists that the Age of Empires may be coming to an end, but that this is no excuse for the dragons to cling to their fading glory and try to reassert their lost dominion.

His position would be something like, "The world of mortals has surpassed us; they have carved out empires, learned magics that rival our greatest, united under a common banner and advanced beyond the savages we once terrorized. The shadow of war threatens to destroy all they have created, our place should be among them, working to stop this war before it can happen, not scheming to divide the lands of the defeated! Our time is passed, selfishly clinging to our glory will only lead to death and pain. Will you allow our proud race to descend to mere predators feeding off of the weak?"

A heroic dragon might have some sympathy for the mortals or a sense of honor to them. They might be dragons that accept their current lot and would rather offer wisdom to mortals. Or they might still want to regain some of their glory, but intend on using their power to protect or help mortals. Maybe they see some value in civilization, and want to encourage more idealistic and noble mortals to take action or they may wish to keep their more brutal cousins from running amok.

Think your metallic dragons from D&D.

I'll give it some thought. Although you can probably guess from my edited first post where I stand.

[up]That works. Having characters with conflicting goals and beliefs can really liven things up.

Although, I have a feeling that, since this is apparently going to focus on the dragons, I have a feeling my character would only be there in the beginning before he leaves to put up what he said.

[up]Perhaps, but there are a lot of problems in the empire that a noble dragon might be able to help with.

Yeah, but those are adventures for another game, not one about dragons. Unless another one comes to wherever he lives, incognito, and runs into him there.

I'll see where it goes from the opening, but beyond him maybe trying to find and train the new generation of heroes and/or wizards, he probably not factor into the main conflict.

Alright, tomorrow is super busy for me so I don't think I'll get a profile done tonight or tomorrow, but I'll try to get it out when I can. Since we might have an overabundance of heroes, I want to make a villain. My current idea right now is an Anti-Villain dragon who acts as a Necessarily Evil by providing enough chaos and discord to the land so as to do what it takes to prevent the Bigger Bad / Ultimate Evil (whose long-abandoned temple/summoning area is concealed under the dragon's lair) from ever emerging in the world again.

Interesting. I could see my character and your having the same goal of keeping the land safe from darkness, but because your guy fights for chaos...

Plenty of time for coming up with character write-ups. And I'm only too happy to work with players to fill the world up. You want your lair sitting on top of some eldritch location hiding some horrible baddy? You tell me how many tentacles it has, and we'll make it happen.

And I'm always on board for Well-Intentioned Extremists/Noble Demons/Affably Evil-types.

Interested. I've been thinking of an Audiovisual Dragon, in that his powers mess with images and/or sound...

Or maybe a dragon with pheromone powers who wants to be left alone. Or the latest in a line of rare dragons who have unique abilities, except he's very young and found out about them before maturity, so the question now is "how will he use them"?

Or maybe a Pinocchio dragon! Or a dragon cursed to slowly turn into another species...
