Just cut the examples and make it definition only, then repair the definition.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyI already cleaned up the examples a couple of times. So yeah, the return of the bad writing style makes me supportive of an example cut.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanShame that people can't behave. There are a bunch of good examples, but yeah, I support an example cut due to that.
Check out my fanfiction! The Audience Reaction here is "video game sound effects that are annoying". Methinks the description carries its meaning well enough.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHmm, I was under the impression that Most Wonderful Sound was like Hell Is That Noise, an objective trope related to sounds you hear when something good happens as opposed to a sound you hear when something bad is about to happen. I was going to propose we make Most Annoying Sound more objective by making it a sound you hear very, very frequently, but it looks like I was mistaken and Most Wonderful Sound is also a YYMV trope.
Pff, I would support making both tropes objective, because I am not a fan of YMMV tropes in general. Another option might be to move it to Darth since Most Wonderful Sound is in Sugar. Only other option is to clean it again and hope for the best or else get rid of it entirely.

I'd suggest moving it to the Darth side, but that's not a dumping ground for complaining.
I'm not sure it's possible to make it objective. What counts as annoying or even common is subjective. Some of them you will inevitable hear repeatedly in normal gameplay (like "You must gather your party before venturing forth,") while others you have to be grinding to hear as frequently. And personally I never heard "Hey, listen!" that often, nor found it annoying.
What you could probably keep are deliberately invoked examples, such as the image example.

Check out my fanfiction!^ True, but I think it would be more objective, especially if the example writer had to explain how often the sounds gets played specifically instead of just insisting it is often enough to bother them.
However, that would still require someone to check and clean up bad examples as they are provided. Perhaps just getting rid of it would be best, I do not think we would lose anything of value.

It's been cleaned up at least twice before. And still it attracts Natter and complaining. I vote for Definition Only, and Example Sectionectomy.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Take your pick. It has a lot of inbounds and from a Google search for the URL it seems to be used as a Fan Speak phrase rather frequently. Hence I support only an example cut, others may feel differently.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIf we give the official page an Example Sectionectomy, could those be moved to a Darth Wiki page?
The examples? Eh, I prefer not - they are still poorly written.
Seems like we have a few options each with support. Crowner?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThanks for hooking this crowner, to whoever did it.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think the examples, badly written or no, are the only interesting part of the page and without them the whole thing may as well be deleted.
In my opinion, the bulleted list does the same job without as much shouting.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSpeaking of the bulleted list, I think that the description should be tweaked so that examples (on YMMV pages) are required to fit under one of the bullet points, rather than it just being a "general examples" list, so that people can't use it to just complain about any sound/voice they happen to dislike. And the Ear Worm bullet should be removed, it just encourages complaining about music, which is stupid, especially since it's supposed to be about annoying sounds, not music.
I like the first suggestion.
I changed the Ear Worm bullet to "sounds", since that is what the trope is about.
Also, a crowner tally:
- "Cut the example section." is at 8-3 yea/nay.
- "Delete the whole page." is at 2-6 yea/nay.
I'm pretty sure sounds cannot be Ear Worms. The only reason I can think of why a sound would get stuck in someone's head would be extreme repetition, and there's already a bullet for that.
Anyway, adding my previous suggestion to the crowner.
I can take a sound as Ear Worm, on Tropes Are Not Narrow grounds. Downvoted your suggestion on my now-standard "Who is going to do that?" reason, though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBump and vote tally:
- "Tweak the description so that all examples are required to fit at least one of the bullet points in the description (even if the examples section is cut, YMMV pages can still have them, so this still matters). " is at 10-2 yea/nay.
- "Cut the example section." is at 13-8 yea/nay.
Current crowner standings:
- Tweak the description so that all examples are required to fit at least one of the bullet points in the description: 15 up, 4 down
- Cut the example section: 14 up, 11 down
I wonder who is going to come forward and implement that.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDefinitely gonna take some time in Short Term Projects, methinks.
Crown Description:
The page Most Annoying Sound suffers from poorly written examples despite several cleanup attempts.
Ugh. Where do I even begin...
Most Annoying Sound is, quite simply, broken. It has two major problems, which I will detail below.
It's poorly defined. The description does a rather lousy job of defining this article beyond being a catch-all "complain about audio you don't like" page. In fact, it seems to go out its way to give the impression that there are no actual standards as to what qualifies outside of the medium restriction. It lists a bunch of stuff than can qualify, but completely fails to make it clear what doesn't. The way it's written, you could shoehorn just about anything here, making it meaningless.
The examples read like rants. This article is a chore to read, since tropers apparently just can't keep their composure when adding examples and must pepper their auditory grievances with profanity, Bold Inflation, CAPITAL LETTERS, and repeating themselves repeating themselves repeating themselves repeating themselves. Even the negative Audience Reactions we keep around need to be more than just pointless whining. Hell, even the discussion page is full of angry comments, most of which are complaining about the rule against examples outside of toys and video games, which just goes to show how much vitriol this page inspires in the people who edit it.
This needs a redefinition, a sectionectomy, or SOMETHING to be done about it to make it more than just a breeding ground for mindless ranting.
