Are you sure you didn't mix up Tim Burton with Alan Moore?

Actually, that sounds more like Mark Millar's Dumbo.

If this were Alan Moore it'd have at least one instance of rape.

[up][up][up][up] You know, at least that sounds different. I'd prefer something that's completely unrecognisable as Dumbo to a tired rehash.

So, do we make a new thread for live action Mulan or create a thread for all live action Disney remakes?

Head, meet wall.

I don't suppose we'll be seeing Hunchback or Hercules, too? A live-action Tarzan by Disney might actually be kinda cool.

IIRC, after the abysmal Tarzan 2 (I'll always defend the TV series, though) the Burroughs state forbade Disney from doing any more Tarzan stuff.

And then they went and approved that horrible Tarzan CGI movie instead. Bravo, guys.

I said this in some other thread, but I have a long, long list of stories Disney could be animating instead of rehashing their old successes.

Hansel and Gretel, Goldilocks, Journey to the West, the Legend of Momotaro, Little Red Riding Hood (which had her own short once, but so did Chicken Little), Sinbad (like anyone remembers Dreamworks' try anymore), Amadis du Gaul, Anansi, a real King Arthur animated movie, Phantom of the Opera, El Cid Campeador, Don Quixote, Around the World in 80 Days, The Odyssey, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, Renard the Fox, Little Women, Pippi Longstocks, Pollyanna, Heidi of the Alps, etc, etc...

Didn't Disney try to make an animated film based on Reynard, but had to add in Chanticleer the rooster, and the idea somehow wound up as Rock A Doodle?

A lot of the stuff on that list has been animated already, but since no one in America - not even most anime fans - has heard of Nippon Animation's WMT shows and the rest are kind of obscure, they could get away with it.

For my part there are quite a few of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales that could make really good animated films if done right. I think even Jay Ward might have gotten around to doing some of those.

[up][up][up][up][up][up]What's next? Live-action reboots of Atlantis The Lost Empire or Treasure Planet?

Actually, those would be fairly interesting.

Mulan might not suck. The right cast with a good director and who knows? I'm hoping they hire a Chinese director - one well-versed in Wu-Xia films preferably. It would give the film great aesthetic that would differentiate it from the animated movie.

An adaptation of Hunchback could be breathtaking. I'd rather they keep the music though since Hunchback's score has a lot more character focus.

I just don't know what a Mulan Live-Action would look like.

[up][up] How about we have it set in modern China with John Woo on helm? I would love to see Mulan with a gun in each hand.

Bumping this, because while there has been no news recently I do have questions worthy of discussion

How are they going to handle the crows,if they include them at all? Nevermind that the crows might have progressive at the time, people don't really look on them favourably today.

What's also tricky is that the original film was set in a contemporary 1940s,will they keep the time period or set it in the future?

There's Pink Elephants Parade, will that even appear as a result of drunken shenanigans or will they find a way to include without references to alcohol ?

Basically, what I'm seeing here is a pattern, significant portions of the film will have to be completely rewritten in order to make it acceptable to modern tastes, which means it might end up be a completely different film altogether.

Just make them realistic crows who happen to talk 'normally' with no exaggerated accents or anything. What in the world is racist about that?

They'll definitely change the crows. No doubt about that.

The Pink Elephants sequence, however - it's essentially Dumbo's drunken hallucinations, so I wonder how they'll do it without getting him drunk, or via any other way to make him hallucinate. You could probably never get a child drunk in a movie these days.

They probably can squeeze that by with a baby elephant since it's not a human child.

As for the crows, if anyone protests over simple talking crows without any outrageous accents or mocking cultural traits just because they have black feathers then those people will protest over anything either way.

1) They should make the film a contemporary piece since circus aren't that popular today like they were back then.

2) Retain the crows voice voice and personality as (as sort of racist they were) they are iconic to the scene, period and location in the movie. Just tone it down a bit so they won't come off a charicture.

3) No easy way to do the Pink Elephant scene without having the minor drink alchohol. Either cut out the scene thus ridding the movie of a classic moment of the film, change it into a dream sequence not fueled by alchohol, or do it as is but suffer the implication of a child character performing substance abuse.

I think this film would actually benefit from being completely animated in 3D as opposed to being a live action film with animated scenes.

I pretty much entirely disagree. If its CGI-mixed with live action, then the animals would probably end up looking pretty realistic and... that might not look great. I mean, Jungle Book went in a more dramatic look (or so I've been told, never cared much for Jungle Book) and Cinderella didn't have the mice do anything at all, but Dumbo is pretty comedic, absurd, and animated. It'll probably hit the uncanny valley hard if they try to have realistic CGI animals do those stunts and it wouldn't be Dumbo if you cut them.

I've mention this before, but I don't see the point of the remake being live action. Unlike Jungle Book there is no human lead to justify having actual human presence, and the humans are largely inconsequential to the narrative bar the scene where Mrs. Jumbo defends Dumbo and subsequently gets put in solitary. You could easily make every human The Faceless (bar the clowns during Dumbo's performances I guess) and not lose much.

I saw the new Junglebook film, and while I enjoyed it I had this annoying feeling that it was laying the groundwork for a live action Lion King, which has actually been announced as their next project.

I have no doubt that Tim Burton is a fantastic directer who can make great films, but I have this hunch the director attached to this film may change again.
