That there are main characters who are essentially soldiers just doing their jobs does not preclude the story from being light-hearted or silly—indeed, I'd go so far as to say that my Gurkha's character concept would fit right in, were it not for his (my) insistence that khaki battledress and soldiers' nicknames work just as well. And it's not as if every character's rolling that way, after all.

But since there's apparently an insistence from certain players that a Gurkha bagpiper might not fit, I suppose I should roll up a secondary backup character just to be sure, hmm? (Not just for that reason, actually, since this is a concept that's surfaced in my mind every once in a while....)

To throw my two pennia in, I don't think there's any reason you can't have the flashy costume and silly code name, but you don't have to.

Harking back to Audie Murphy some of the shit he did was about as close to superhuman as you're going to get without flying or shooting lasers out of your eyes.

Right, exactly. I want to play that kind of character, and the GM has been kind enough to allow me to.

@Sabre: From the Sign up thread:

There! Bloody silly nickname and bloody silly costume, check. Superhuman abilities to aid the war effort, check. She's a superhero. It says so right here.

Look, I'm sorry if you feel offended, but I just felt I had a valid point to make. You can play whoever you want to play; that's fine. It's just that if something is called one thing, I expect it to be that thing. Hence why I suggested that when the RP thread is put up, the word 'Super' is taken out of the title. (We can still play Superheroes if we want to, but characters like yours would be fine too.) Though perhaps my reaction to all of this is due to me being a hardcore Superhero fan, whereas (and correct me if I'm wrong,) I'm getting the impression that you're not as much of one, at least not in the traditional sense. (And by 'traditional,' I mean Superman, Batman, etc.)

Oh, I'm well aware, but I've wanted to work the phrase "logistical fury" into something for a long, long time, and you offered me the perfect excuse. And you're correct in that I'm not a superhero fan. I'm a military historian. The two aren't mutually exclusive, I'm aware, but you tend to think a certain way when your benchmark for measuring force isn't "how hard can an individual punch" but "how many battalions can I transport and sustain".

As a bonus, the idea of a fully-costumed superhero geared around the task of getting supplies from Point A to Point B amuses me far too much for me to give it up.

Actually being serious. I mean, on the first page of signups alone we've got an exaggerated Texas Ranger, a paragon of Russian MANLINESS that would make Putin fall to his knees, and a Gurkha who chased a shoggoth away with bagpipe music. If you can't tell the tone of the game from those entrants, well.

Quite a few people are going for that role in the party. Character dynamics will just have to be adjusted on the fly, as in most RPs.

For the record, my character is someone with superpowers who wears spandex, has a "superhero name", fought bad guys even before getting recruited for the superhero group, has an origin story, has dealt with supervillain-esque characters (the mad scientist who created her), and is moody and distant. I believe that Black Flame fits the bill for a superhero. Granted, one along the lines of Batman rather than Superman in tone and character, but still a superhero.

I decided to look up just why that trope came into existence, especially given the impracticality.

Superheroes Wear Tights ...because early superhero outfits were based on the outfits worn by people in the circus, including the bright colors that made them visually distinctive, and it stuck as a tradition, even as the days of the circus waned. Being easier to draw likely didn't hurt either.

Oh dear. There's no way I'm passing this point up for the comedy potential. I might just decide to play my Gurkha as the prankster type. A prankster type with a set of bagpipes and a couple of friends in the Highland regiments to learn their traditions...

During WWII, weren't there a bunch of Americans with German ancestry that were suspected of being double agents?
