Chuunibyou?

Are you familiar with the phrase, "Chuunibyou"? It is otherwise known as, "Eighth-Grader Syndrome. Children are most prone to it around the end of eigth-grade. It's an adorable, yet dreadful disease that results from newly-found self-awareness interacting with an overactive imagination. This combination results in the peculiar behaviour we're all quite painfully familiar with.

Like the guy who only read weekly manga magazines up until yesterday then suddenly starts reading the original English versions of books. Or someone who has absolutely no idea what coffee tastes like but still tries to develop a taste for drinking it black. And then there's those who believe that they have special powers and become obsessed with the ocul-

"Ohohohoho!" It's such a shame that mere mortals such as yourselves cannot truly understand who we are." A girl in black standing atop a wooden park bench pulled out a weapon from behind her back. The Black Matter Accelerator (an airsoft gun).

Another voice rang out in the night. "Indeed. Perhaps it's time to finally unleash the power of the Dark Saint-Killers." A boy stepped out of the bushes, covered with thorns yet trying to remain stoic. He held aloft Grenius, the Staff of Absolute Destruction (a tennis racquet).

"Fufufu, I suppose it's alright to give these fools a show for once." Ahriya, stepping into the light of the street lamp unsheathed Crimson Night, the Mighty Greatsword of Conquerers (a stick).

"Reality, be bent! Synapse, break! Vanishment, this world!"

Introduction

Welcome! This is a Chuunibyou Slice of Life RP for all those who are still Eigth-Graders at heart but find it difficult to project themselves in Real Life. For prospective players, I do recommend that you see at least the first episode of the anime series if you have not done so already. It can really help you get a grasp of the concept of Chuunibyou. However, if you feel like you understand it already and don't need a refresher, you are totally welcome here.

You guys will be starting a new year of High School somewhere in Japan. Unless you've made plans with another R Per, you'll all be meeting up for the first time.

I intend for the tone of the RP will be more comedy-based but in the end, it's all up to you guys, the roleplayers. I will be hurling events at you, stuff like tests, school festivals, beach trips, attacks from evil empires, but in the end, it's up to you guys how to react to these. If you want to make the tone a tad more serious, I leave that too, to your discretion, but make sure to understand what your fellow R Pers are up to as well.

There are two types of characters in this RP: those who have Chuunibyou, and those who had it in the past. Characters who have never had Chuunibyou will be looked at on a case-by-case basis. I don't recommend it unless you can make them really interesting. In this special latter case, you won't have to submit the second part of the character sheet.

Multiple characters are allowed but be sensible about how many characters you throw in this. If you do use multiple characters, labelling different people by colored text in your post is recommended!

Anime characters are allowed but you'll have to have them join this school instead of the one in the anime and their story would pick up here.

Real-Life Character

• Appearance: Hrmm?
  • 160cm
  • 53kg
• Equipment: A big stick. About a meter long, pretty solid and straight. The bark at the base has been grounded off as a handle of sorts.
• Personality: Big-hearted but quiet and shy. When she transforms into her Chuunibyou self though, she becomes loud and boistrous. Believes herself to be the Magical Girl of the Sword, defending the weak and needy by the power of Justice, she runs around with her stick fighting off bad-guys (a literal punching bag in her room).
• Backstory: Was a quiet girl in junior high until she started playing a bunch of RP Gs during eigth grade. Believing in her own powers and urged on by her school rival, Tyrant's Eye, she adopted the guise of Magical Girl of the Sword, and she's had it ever since.

Chuunibyou Character

• Title: Magical Girl of the Sword
• Primary Ability: Has a big sword and can summon smaller swords at will, launching them Gate of Babylon style.
• Weapons/Equipment: Her massive greatsword, Crimson Night, reaches several times Ahriya's own height in length, letting her strike down all who oppose her.

• Name: Arata Ayumi
• Gender: Male
• Year of High School: 2nd
• Appearance: Chuunbiyou Vision: ON! - 149 cm, 45 kg.
• Equipment: A glass Prism, partially cracked. Found in an attic.
• Personality: Rather average, plain and inoffensive. Complexes regarding his slow onset of puberty and height. Once he reveals his secret, however, he becomes the brooding and mystery anti-hero of dawn, appearing forth after the darkest hours as the lone shining ray of hope! Heavily influenced by detective noir-style comic books lately.
• Backstory: A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, concealed under an enigma, buried by a conspiracy, shrouded by a conundrum, sealed with obscurity, broken into a jigsaw puzzle, hidden inside a Chinese box, a veritable Matroyschka doll - to be revealed on the prophesied hour in which the two chaotic stars of Dawn and Dusk collides, and the world is at the brink of destruction!

Let me try my hand at this... Please do note that I'm usually a bit clueless when it comes to anime-ish things, on top of never having watched Chuunibyou. I just like the premise. Apology in advance if something doesn't fit.

The Mundane

Name: Yuki Nagano

Gender: Male

Year of High School: 2nd

Appearance: Probably the male version of Osaka◊ (with mandatory short hair for a boy so plain). A bit tall for a boy his age, standing at 172cm/50kg. A bit wide eyed. A bit absentminded. A bit too plain to be noticeable in the crowd.

Equipment: A small bracelet with a single round turquoise stone, which is actually his phylactery, the Eternal Gem.

Personality: Yuki is more focused about the world that's going on in his head than he is the actual events surrounding him. He reacts to real life events accordingly, mind, only that, given a few minutes, he can easily lapse back into the version of the event in his mind. This is not to say he's a ditz or anything, only quite absentminded and, for lack of a better word, dreamy. Has strong opinions on some basic philosophy questions as well, but mostly keeps to himself. A friendly person all around, if sometimes unreliable and snarky — until his 'inner evil' comes out, of course, then he's a (metaphorical)mustache twirling megalomaniac bent on world conquest and hoarding of valuable artifacts. The Darkspires Master spares nothing in his wake. All shall be conquered, or crushed. Those who stand with him shall serve him, one way or another, or else lie buried six feet under his heels!

Backstory: Yuki loves RPG and western traditional fantasy. He has a fondness for stuffs like D&D but the lack of people to play with means he has to stick to reading and writing down his own things, without sharing with most anyone. Overtime, the unshared obsession became constant disconnects from the world. But hey, at least he has an army of undead eternally bound to serve him. As the Great Lich of the Darkspires, none can stand before his awesome magical power. Those who resist will be trampled under the feet of his undead horde, and those who challenge him will be *zapped* to oblivion by his mighty DISINTEGRATE.

Chunibyou Guise

Title: The Great Lich of the Darkspires

Primary Abilities: Undead control/summoning, high level arcane spells, immortality.

Equipment: The Eternal Gem. The gem that safeguards his soul, acting as a phylactery, and is the amplifier of his already astounding magical power.

I admittedly know absolutely nothing about this, but boy, it looks fun. Let me get on with the character sheet.

• Name: Zakuro Kishiyama
• Gender: Female. You wouldn't tell from the distance.
• Year of High School: 3rd
• Appearance: Here, have some confusion. Naturally, this is Chuunibyou mode. Stands at ginormous 182 meters, weighing 66 kg.
• Equipment: An empty bottle(rare, 1.75 liters kind) of Cherry Coke.
• Personality: Tries to come out as a tough-as-nails kind of delinquent, but has so many issues regarding both her freakishly tall figure and her lack of any assets that it shows in her frequent stumbling through the conversations with lots of awkwardness and weirdly said phrases, causing rumors that cause another rumors, not helping her case at all. Once her smooth gangster self shows up however, all doubts are thrown through the window once she becomes an unflappable, wisecracking and dashingly charismatic badass who gets both ladies and girly men. Manly men are instead her personal army of gangsters.
• Backstory: It sucks to be regarded as a weirdo from the get go. Zakuro never got a break due to her enormous height and genuinely confusing looks which... involved her in a manner of adventures she'd rather forget about. The one comfort from being a constant laughingstock were flicks about Al Capone and similar gangsters, so different from Yakuza known here. Amazed by fancy pinstripe suits, luparas, fedoras, Italian and quite gentlemanly behavior Zakuro decided. No more the timid, confused girl. It was go time. That night in the crowded room full of weirdness, a legend known as Dashing Rogue of Thousand Guns was born.

Chuunibyou Character:

• Title: Dashing Rogue of Thousand Guns
• Primary Abilities: Phantasmal gangsters that she can summon freely, coming equipped with, obviously, tommy guns and luparas; bunches of long garrotes that she can summon at will, cutting at her enemies; impeccable aim with her own lupara
• Equipment/Weapons: Suzumebachi, her dreaded custom-made lupara with four barrels(since Four Is Death) that rains lead, fire and destruction upon those who dare to oppose Her Alluring Magnificence(that's how her ghost cronies address her).

Sorry for the late response. I've been busy today.

Hmm. Chuunibyou tends to be more fantasy based. Believing oneself to be a grimdark hero and stuff. Think Sephiroth wannabes. Gangs I'm not too sure about. Sorry if it wasn't explained too clearly. I'd say change up the inspiration a bit into like a more outlandish trying too hard variant, something like "Black Suit Gunners".

• Real-Life Character
  • Name: Kanazawa Kana
  • Gender: Female
  • Year of High School: 2nd
  • Appearance: Kana Kana
  • Equipment: A seven pointed star pendant, some pre prepared ping pong ball sized bags full of flour to fling as spells, a bamboo blade and other miscellaneous toys at home.
  • Personality: Normally, sweet and talkative, friendly to everyone and a good classmate who is collaborative and humble to the class. Of course, this is because an Elpharim Princess from the origin of reality must always maintain a dignified and gentle exterior when dealing with commoners. Doing anything else would be a disgrace to her murdered parents and station from another life, the Sovereign Priestess of Magic and the Warrior of Aether Blade. Thus, when going Chuuni she becomes a whole lot more haughty, proud and mischievous, loving of battle and willing to show the power of the last Elpharim Princess to those worthy of the spectacle.
  • Backstory: Kana's Chuunibyou developed rather naturally growing up. She loved actiony magical girl shows, fantasy in general and the like... though growing up she got into more pretentious and complicated stories with headache inducing magical systems, lineages bearing ancient powers flowing through their veins as well as more Occidental fantasy settings with diverse races such as elves and the like. This eventually led her to some Roleplaying Communities where she could truly unleash her imagination and thus create her own fantasy. However, an incident back at home where playing around made her neglect her duties and studies... as well as her appearance. After a nasty fight with her parents, Kana then finally unleashing her Chuunibyou... Declaring herself the Elpharim Princess Elariel Fairlock, Sorceress Supreme of Ancient Magic, reincarnated after the ends of time into this human form, to wait for the appointed time to bring a rebirth to the world of magic. Or at least, she did so on the net and in private. After the scolding, she's somewhat tight lipped about it at home and school, pretending to live a double life in her mind. On her first year of Highschool she joined the Kendo club, where she developed a love-hate-serious-envy relationship with Kinoshita Mai a girl of her class who she considers has an unfairly cool backstory in real life as the daughter of a man coming from a wealthy family with an ancient tradition, tracing heir lineage back to important clans of history and his beautiful British wife he met overseas as a young man. As Mai is a no nonsense young woman who was taught swordsmanship as a young woman by her family and complains as a pain having to go back to the ancient style main house of the family for ceremonies and parties, Kana as a Chuuni wants to be her, murder her and be her friend all at the same time. To her misfortune on the second point, Mai is unbearably good at Kendo, handing Kana's ass to her without breaking a sweat in most of their sparring matches... beating her even more viciously in sparring matches when the Chuuni girl grows bothersome with her delusions and complaining. Currently, in a club of five, Kana is the third best fighter, with Mai as the first and thus ascended to President by the Third Year student Awayuki Hotaro, second best fighter. Kana spends her days ditching Kendo practice three days out of five to play games, find new magics around town, laze around and fight evil.

• Chuunibyou Character
  • Title: The Elpharim Princess Elariel Fairlock, Sorceress Supreme of Ancient Magic and bearer of the Last Origin Soul.
  • Primary Ability: Spellcasting, complicated incantations summoning dramatic magical effects and auras of power to destroy enemies with as well as summons. Can also wield an enchanted crystal blade with the grace of the Ancient Elpharim school of swordsmanship.
  • Weapons/Equipment: Elariel wields in battle Alarim, the Ancient Crystal Blade which masquerades as a simple bamboo blade to commoners. However, her greatest weapon is one which lies within her. As the bearer of the Last Origin Soul, she commands a powerful magical soul, capable of drawing upon the Seven Elements of Magic and generate near endless power and wisdom. Though the soul lies within her and only manifests on her body rarely (When she has time to draw on blue ink over her body) she uses her Pendant of the Seven Magics to draw forth its power and might.

Nice and extensive. Accepted. Will Mai be making appearances within the RP?

I also encourage non-current sufferers. We'll have a lot of ham and not much deadpan at this rate.

Real-Life Character

• Name: Aza Amakusa
• Gender: Female
• Year of High School: 1st
• Appearance: 150cm, 45kg
• Equipment: She keeps boxes of her old toys at home and she has yet to throw them out. This includes toy sniper rifles, actual switchblades, a big cosplay sword as well as a bunch of elaborate fantasy costumes of varying style.
• Personality: Kind and caring to most people. An ideal student and first-year representative. If someone finds out about her past however, she'll quickly panic and try to assert that she is unrelated. After all, they don't have the same name and they look completely different. Will resort to comedic-violence if necessary.
• Backstory: After a couple of years of Chuunibyou, Aza grew out of it and decided to abandon her past self. embarassed and annoyed by her past, but unable to afford moving to another school, she changed her legal name and reinvented herself. Formerly Yuki Kotobuki, she changed her name to Aza Amakusa and completely changed her appearance. She dyed her hair and tied it in pigtails, stopped wearing glasses, and started dressing better. Is now looking forward to starting a new life as a new person in school.

Chuunibyou Character

• Title: Bloody Snow
• Primary Ability: General Ice/Snow-based powers
• Weapons/Equipment: All of her real-life weapons have appropriate counterparts.

If you allow me to I'll make Mai appear as a sort of related side character. What Priestess is to the Wicked Eye, Mai is to the Supreme Sorceress.

• Real-Life Character
  • Name: Naesa Nishka
  • Gender: Female
  • Year of High School: 1st
  • Appearance: Here she is without her wig and contacts while this is her with her wig and contacts.
  • Equipment: Naesa carries around a spare bag to store her wig and contacts in in order to change into after classes are over. The bag also contains her twin pairs of Summoners of the Divine (an ice cream scooper and a ladle.)
  • Personality: Naesa tries to be friendly with everyone in order to better blend in with the people of Earth and hide her identity as the Messenger of the Universe, Platinum Helmsworth. As such, she tries to keep up a spirited yet dignified facade. However, when she assumes her role of Platinum she tends to show her true colors. Haughty and stuck up, she oftentimes refers to her fellow Chuunibyou as silly and childish whilst ignoring the hypocrisy of her words. That's not to say she doesn't have any positive points however. While considered her fellow Chuunibyou as childish she finds it enduring and tends to provide a source of help to them in their times of need. Not only that but she tends to show more respect to those she feels may be connected to her idol.
  • Backstory: Naesa used to be an ordinary human until her second year of middle school. One day she woke up to see that the universe was brighter and clearer and that she could hear the universe calling out to her. The universe explained that she was its messenger and that she had gone deep undercover but that the spel used had broken (when in actuality she'd just gotten contacts the day before and her imaginstion was starting to get out of control). From there she went online to study more about her role and discovered the works of a mage known as Mori Summer. The next few years were spent following the mage's works. When the Mabinogion disappeared from the internet she set out to find Mori Summer and either restore her to her former position or take her place. To that end she has cast a spell on herself that allows her to more effectively blend in with her classmates.

• Chuunibyou Character
  • Title: Messenger of the Universe - Platinum Helmsworth
  • Primary Ability: Spellcasting using the Summoners of the Divine as well as the ability to use the two either separately as for hand to hand combat or together as one giant weapon for long range combat.
  • Weapons/Equipment: Two weapons known as the Summoners of the Divine (an ice cream scoop and a ladle) that can be used to cast spells (by flinging sand, pebbles, leaves, etc.) or be used for hand to hand combat.

And here's the character we discussed. Let me know if there's anything I need to change or if she's too similar to another character (canon or otherwise) and I'll make the necessary changes.

Real-Life Character

• Name: Yomi Yuzuhara
• Gender: Female
• Year of High School: 1st
• Appearance: Since I am not popular, I am going to hang out with Chuunibyou
• Equipment: A plastic oni mask from a fair, used mostly to help hide her embarrassment, and a wiffle bat, used to bonk people.
• Personality: Yomi is a pessimist who wants to be optimistic. While originally her pessimistic attitude was an attempt to be cool, it has since become a defense mechanism to excuse herself from meeting anyone else's standards while having none of her own. She now wants to be the kind of person who can laugh and enjoy things wholeheartedly, but can't help but concentrate on the flaws of everything. She is an antisocial girl who only seems to speak up to criticize things. However, she regrets being this way and truly wants to change to be a better person. Yomi isn't really a chuunibyou and thus painfully aware of how embarrassing/silly the whole thing is. Her performance tends to be either little to no effort or very intense as she channels all her frustration and embarrassment into a forced performance.
• Backstory: During middle school Yomi distanced herself from the rest of her class, looking down on everyone else to be immature or stupid. There was chuunibyou in her class and somehow the two became something almost like friends. Maybe it was simply because Yomi didn't put as much effort into avoiding the chuunibyou as the others. The chuunibyou would come over and talk some chuunibyou delusions to Yomi, and she would laugh at and call the chunnibyou names. Then she would share nihilistic ideas with the chuunyibyou who would respond with quotes which sounded stolen straight from a super sentai show. No matter how much Yomi derided the chuunibyou, the chuunibyou always seemed happy and full of energy. One day the chuunibyou moved away. While Yomi thought nothing of it at first, she soon found herself to be quite lonely. With no one to argue the counterpoint, she found her own opinions to actually be kind of depressing. Sick of seeing everything as bleak and pointless, Yomi wanted to become a friendly and happy person, but to no avail. She couldn't help but always concentrate on the flaws in everything. She thought about how the chuunyibou was always in high spirits despite all the crap she and the rest of the class gave them. She couldn't understand it. In hopes of unlocking this mystery so perhaps she herself could become such a cheerful person, Yomi has decided to spend the next school year as a chuunyibou.

Chuunibyou Character

• Title: Oni Ninja Princess of something
• Primary Ability: She hasn't given it much thought and probably forget whatever power she said she had. Usually just makes something up for convenience.
• Weapons/Equipment: Mask of you can't see my face, and Kanabo of brain bashing

Since you guys were short on straight men I figured I would try this as a character, a non-chuunibyou chuunibyou. Always feel weird using an actual character for an appearance, but Tomoko has such a lovely look. Let me know if the character doesn't work and I will try to make another, maybe a genki goth.

I'm a bit worried because the character seems a tad dark compared to everyone else. I'm not entirely sure it'd fit in with the mood. However, it does seem like a good way to balance out the rest of the cast. She's accepted, but I recommend thinking it over again and changing it if you don't think it'll work out well.

Oh? Didn't mean to make her dark. She would basically play out as a deadpan snarker of the group. I'll make a few posts and if she doesn't fit I will fade her out and (with your permission of course) replace her with another character. Did replace the base ball bat with a wiffle bat though so I can actually hit people with it. I'll make a post a bit later.

Real-Life Character

Name: Geraldine Neustadt

Gender: Female

Year of High School: 1st

Appearance: Guten Tag!

Equipment: A spear (which she calls Blau Dämon Speer) that can actually "telepathically" (quotation marks because no mind is involved) move things, a devil hoodie to hide her "horns" (actually ears that look like horns), and a blue piece of cloth.

Personality: She is cheerful to the point of hyperactivity sometimes, and might be a bit of a ditz if the fact that she doesn't get that Chuunibyou=/=actual superpowers or sorcery didn't tip you off; it's most likely because she doesn't understand much Japanese, though.

Backstory: Originally from Germany, Geraldine used to be a normal girl with brown hair and human ears. She watched a clip of an anime about chuunibyou, and assumed they had actual superpowers. Desperately wanting to be like them, she pretended to have magic powers with a cool-looking spear she found in her closet. It turned out to have actual powers when it activated, causing her to transform into the blue-haired, horn-eared girl we have today.

Sometime after the incident, her father got a job in Japan. This did barely anything to stop her from thinking that Chuunibyou really did have magical powers, as she only knew japanese to the extent that the average Weeaboo did. She at the very least knew english pretty well, so there was that. When she managed to run into some actual Chuunibyous, she was disappointed when it looked like a bunch of ordinary teens fake-fighting, though she chalked it up to her inability to see "the Other World"; this lead to her wearing a blindfold to allow her to focus on the battle and not the fact that it looks unreal.

Chuunibyou Character

Title: Mahou Majin Shoujo Blau Dämon

Primary Ability: She can move things with Blau Dämon Speer and "see" without sight via blindfold.

Weapons/Equipment: Blau Dämon Speer (of course) and Blau Dämon Augenbinde (a blue piece of cloth).
