Influenced by the likes of Silent Storm, I wanted to see if I can get to RP a game set in the Cold War. Not sure on which year though. Although having to start in the last few years of the Vietnam War does sound nice.

The main objective is for operators working for the CIA or the KGB to accomplish their orders after being seconded from their main unit (special forces or intelligence agencies), no matter the cost. As time goes by, both black ops units will be involved in fighting an enemy that is trying to undermine the Cold War to start World War III. Naturally, said manpower will either come from the West and West-allied countries or from those allied with the ComBloc.

Classified, CIA Headquarters

XXXX, Director of the CIA

I assume that you're here because you believe that the fate of the free world rests with what you can do to undermine the Communists from winning this war. Yes, you've seen what happened in Korea and they've almost won if not for the determination of the free world. Otherwise, you wouldn't be standing in front of me right now.

Like you, I share the belief in a world where the Communists can't use force to change our way of life. You were handpicked from your nation's most elite and finest in order to undermine the Eastern Bloc. Which means you'll be deployed in order to conduct special forces and intelligence operations to deny them the ability to subvert other free nations through conventional and unconventional means whenever we cannot operate overtly.

If you're captured or killed, I am authorized by the President of the United States to deny your affiliation with us. Do you understand?

Once again, I welcome you to the ranks of Force Operations X unit. The fate of the free world rests within your actions.

Classified, KGB Headquarters

XXXX, Chairman of the KGB

Welcome comrade. I assume that you are here because you are convinced that one day, the might of Communism can still have a place in the 20th century. After all, we were the ones who beat back fascism in the Second World War. You would not be standing in front of me if that was not the case.

Yesterday, we were allies with the West. And now, we are bitter enemies. Despite the defeat of our North Korean comrades in the Korean conflict, we continue to remain vigilant and alert to prevent the capitalists from trying to undermine our way of life. You are handpicked from your country's most elite and finest to protect our mother and fatherlands. You will be deployed in the field to conduct special operations and intelligence missions where conventional means cannot be achieved.

However, comrades. I have only one thing to say. If you are captured or killed, I am authorized by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union to deny your affiliation with us. Is that clear?

Once again, I welcome you into the ranks of the Spetsgruppa Zaslon, comrades. Remember, peace can be achieved through unity and socialism.

Sounds interesting... If I join I might go for KGB, though I'll try to keep the 'In Soviet Russia...' jokes to a minimum. Maybe.

I'll probably do one soon, maybe on the side of the ComBloc.

  • Name: Pierce Harland
  • Appearance: About 5'10", average build. Reddish-brown hair, only shaves every ten days or so. Caucasian, but deeply tanned. Never takes off his dog tags and always carries a flask and a utility knife.
  • Nationality: American (P.O.B. Seattle, WA)
  • Faction: FOX
  • Last Post: Not affiliated with FOX prior to 1972; recruited from US Army
  • History: Prior to his stint in Vietnam, Pierce Harland had nearly completed a doctorate in applied mathematics. He was personable and had many close friends. His experiences in Nam changed everything — in the year he's spent there, he's become a drunken, hateful belligerent. At the same time, he became a notable sniper, and has been deployed several times by the Army as a solo commando, specializing in urban combat and high-priority target elimination.
  • Skills: Pierce is a mathematical genius capable of solving complex equations quickly and accurately in his head. This goes hand in hand with his status as an elite sniper, as he is able to calculate exactly where a bullet will end up based on his estimates of factors like wind, a given rifle's innate muzzle velocity, and bullet drop over long distances. He can quickly scale trees or even buildings (in some cases with the aid of rope or a climbing harness) in order to achieve an ideal vantage point. He also has some experience with close-quarters knife fighting, jungle survival, and the setting of explosive booby traps and/or snares.
  • Others: Pierce's shift in personality is due to an incident involving the death of a Vietnamese child soldier

@EK

- Can you fix up the sheet? Looks confusing. Do it like this...

  • Name
  • Nationality

This should make it nicer. Use the asterisk before "Name" so that it looks like that.

Expressing interest, depending on how pulpy/realistic it'll be. If I join, I might form up with the Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation, and Mutual Assistance (Also Invading Each Other on Soviet Orders) with a Polish character—although his backstory is going to depend on the start date.

(What, a sister who was involved in Warsaw '44/Poznan '56/Gdansk '70? She totally doesn't exist, no. And my friend's newly-arrived cousin bears a strange resemblance to me? Coincidence. Total coincidence. I would never betray my family for the sake of commun—I mean, I would never betray Communism for the sake of family.)

I'm interested. Most days I'm only on in the evening Eastern Daylight Time because of work. Is that a problem?

@SE

- In terms of how things are going to be, I plan to make things realistic. Although do expect some prototype stuff to show up like how it's done in MGS3 and a bit like in real life.

@HK

- Sure. Whatever works for you.

@EK

- Thanks. Looks okay though. I'll put him in the roster list later.

Oh dear. Just be aware, there is at least one military geek around here with an emphasis on Sovbloc gear. So, you know, if you need a historical deployment date for a certain piece of equipment, or how Soviet doctrine would use them, for instance...

Sure. Thanks for the headsup.

I plan to get a ComBloc sheet later. 'Bout time I play someone from that camp.

PS - We'll probably start the RP by January of 1972.

'72 would be perfect. American characters get Vietnam War experience, there are the usual brushwars in Africa (East German pilots flying in Nigeria), and then, of course, there's the whole 1970 protests to work with in Poland. Janek Wisniewskim padl...

Indeed. I plan to get the black ops units (on both sides) to intervene secretly in Vietnam for both Vietnams. Some of their actions can make some slight changes on whether the North or the South would reunify the continent.

Interesting...I'm toying with the idea of a KGB Honey Trap and pilot who learns of a EMP weapon that could be used against America. If something like that would be an idea I'll certainly post a bio.

Let's keep the futuretech sci-fi weapons to a relative minimal, if at all possible? It just seems silly.

1972 seems a little early for such a weapon given the idea came from the 1986 Dark Knight Returns. But I'd still like to use the character idea if it would work.

The idea of EMP has been around since the early 1960s—see Starfish Prime. The main issue is that EMP weapons require nukes to really work, and non-nuclear EMP weapons are, to this day, not nearly powerful enough to be really worthwhile compared to a conventional high-explosive weapon (despite what Newt Gingrich and company might tell you). So, just personally here, I feel like EMP's overdone as the hyped-up next big threat to be plausible as a superweapon.

Going for the ComBloc

  • Name: Kim Jang-Il
  • Appearance: Using this image
  • Nationality: North Korean
  • Faction: Zaslon
  • Last Post: Jang-Il last served with the Light Infantry Brigades under the Light Infantry Guidance Bureau.
  • History: Born in Pyongyang in 1947 to Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-suk, he was brought up alongside his older sister Kim Kyoung-hui with different surrogates after the death of his mother. After he completed his elementary and secondary education in the capital, Jang-Il served in the Korean People's Army after he officially turned 17 under North Korean law in 1964. After his mandatory service was complete with the rank of Sangsa (Staff Sergeant), he went to study in Moscow State University at the age of 21 under the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies in 1968. After he completed his studies, Jang-Il returned back to Pyongyang and studied at the Kang Kon Military Academy before he was commissioned as a KPA officer with the rank of Sowi (Junior Lieutenant) in 1970. He voluntarily enlisted with North Korean special forces after his commission, being placed under their Light Infantry Brigade before spending a few months stationed near the Korean DMZ without his name being mentioned by North Korean media. Jang-Il was secretly deployed from 1970 to early January of 1972 to assist North Vietnamese forces with special forces training as well as to covertly support them against South Vietnamese-backed military forces before he was ordered to be assigned to the KGB's Zaslon in Moscow.
  • Skills: Thanks to his time with the KPA, Jang-Il has been trained in conventional and commando tactics ranging from small arms use to infiltration and exfiltration methods. From his time in MSU, he is fluent in English and Russian aside from his native Korean. Since he's the son of North Korean's first president, Jang-Il is familiar with North Korean politics and knows the majority of the North Korean elite and those who work in the Worker's Party of Korea.
  • Others: He's one of the few members of the Kim dynasty who has actively made a career in the Korean People's Army. Since he is placed under obscurity by Kim Il-Sung after joining the KPA, intelligence agencies have not been able to get a photo of his face.

That would depend on how the RP would turn out... Who knows, we might do some stuff that may not allow the unification of the two Germanies...
