Thanks a ton. That should make things a lot easier for me.

Is there an option in there to remind tropers of the "No general examples" rule?

Not so far.

That said, I notice that these messages don't display in the mailbox - they don't seem to work anymore as a PM. Is that a feature? You can't send yourself a message anymore, I've noticed.

They come through for me. Maybe it was the specific message. Which one were you testing with?

OK, tried out a few more. Apparently, the only ones that I receive when I send a report to myself are the "stub in Main", "ignoring comments", "thanks!", "mis-play", "arguable", "walkthrough" and "image changes". Only these show up as a green banner, the other ones don't.

Did you remove the one for edit warring? I don't see it anymore.

Okay, I think there should be a message for Sinkholes.

You should draft it.

Greetings,

your edit on <page> inserted a hidden link to another page which isn't relevant or appropriate on this page. We call them Sinkholes and they solely distract and confuse the reader. We particularly don't like those which misuse tropes or turn a sentence completely blue. Please feel free to take such links out if you encounter them.

Thanks for keeping the wiki cool.

A thought on the Sinkhole message: are we still having problems with people sinkholing unrelated works when they mention an actor? "Bob is played by Mark Hamill" sort of thing?

Would that be something we need to call particular attention to in the sinkhole message?

I would keep the "greetings" in if possible. It has worked well for my messages at keeping the responses positive.

It's inconsistent with the other ones. We might consider adding it in.

I think there should be a message for using first person or This Troper. The Conversation On The Main Page message is not enough because sometimes the usage of This Troper is not done in a conversation-like context. At the very least, the Word Cruft message should be changed to mention referring to yourself. Also, if this is not implemented yet, the "Send a message concerning an editing issue" button should only work once per edit so that if multiple tropers find the same bad edit, the troper who made the edit won't get spammed by multiple notifications.

A draft for first-person usage-

Your edit on <page> uses first-person language or lists a personal example. Please see This Troper. Using "I", "this troper", "this editor", or similar words and phrases to refer to yourself is not allowed. We want the wiki to read like it has one voice, so avoid talking about yourself in the future.

Thanks for helping us keep the wiki cool.

I'm sure it's got room for improvement, so have at it :p

Examples Are Not Recent is also a common problem that does not have a message. Here is my attempt at a draft:

The [page] edit you made refers to time relatively to the moment you saved it. Describing works or parts thereof using terms such as "recently", "the latest", "new", "X years/months/weeks/days ago", "upcoming", "currently" and so on is not permitted on this wiki, as they will stop making sense after a while, and editors cannot be trusted to go back and remove or update these words later on. See Examples Are Not Recent for more information.

Thanks for helping us keep the wiki cool.

So I just noticed the (apparently) new button on the page history page for notifying users of common editing mistakes, which is a great idea. However, neither the preset messages for Zero Content Example or Spoiler Policy cover examples where the entire entry is spoiler tagged: ZCE only seems to cover entries with no example at all, and Spoiler only mentions putting the trope name itself behind a spoiler tag. Unless there's another option I overlooked?

The spoiler message says "looks like it violates our spoiler rules"; I would say that it covers the issue.

Yes, but then it only specifies one kind of spoiler violation. I think it would be very easy for an editor to see that and think the message was sent in error, because they didn't do that particular kind of violation, and not look any further into it.

[up]You DO know that the current Spoiler Policy now only forbids the trope/work name from being spoilered, right?

That, and it forbids the description about the article from having spoiler tags.

^ Really? Because I follow the edit banned thread from time to time, and over the last couple months I've seen a lot of users being brought in for spoiler tagging entire trope entries.
