The intent of the trope in the current image, but it's not obvious that the winner is the underdog to someone unfamiliar with the work. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of some screenshots from "The Great Snail Race" that may make the dark horse more figuratively obvious rather than literally.

None of the suggested images work for me at all, but neither does the one that's up there now.

Current works if you understand the context, but I can see how having no foreknowledge would cause confusion. Nothing in this indicates that the purple pony is a nerd and nonathletic. I'm sure there's a really obvious single-frame shot somewhere out there.

[up][up] That...there seems to be too much going on in the current to get everything across that needs to be got.

The second one works better, at least, since it's a rock, which most people would not expect to move at all during a race, and the fact that it is over the finish line implies that it still won.

1.2 is definitely an improvement, as clearly no one would expect a rock to make it to the finish line.

The current is... very busy, and completely meaningless without context. Made worse by the fact it's somewhat literal, that just confuses things further.

The first and last shots of the current do at least imply the Nice Job Breaking It, Rivals! scenario that occurred, but with nothing to indicate why the winner (or, rather, fifth place finisher) was a dark horse, it doesn't quite work. The second suggestion isn't bad, but I kind of wish there were a clearer indication that the rock actually won.

1.2 is a good replacement for the current but only Keep Until Better Image Suggested-worthy.

1.2 has a bit of (less than enthused) support, but it's the only one with any support in the topic. That enough for the switch?

I need to take another look at 1.2, but that's going to have to happen later.

Combining [up] with the shot of the other competitors is the only way to give it enough context to completely satisfy the trope.

I think that while it doesn't paint the entire picture by itself, the rock is enough on its own given the implications of the trope name being about a victory and that it's a rock in race in which it apparently is winning despite being a rock which traditionally is not very fast and therefore would be unlikely to win in a race that is about speed.

The clock's up and the overall consensus is that 1.2 is just good enough to work as a replacement, so I've gone ahead and swapped it in. Locking up.
