The Boundry Between Life and Death. (A CYOA story)

Well, I didn't see too many of these before me (Not that I looked too hard) so I figured I would start one. Time to get cracking.

Finally, the day has come, my first day off in nearly 13 years of working as a Grim Reaper. Some younger reapers looked to me with envy, other older reapers looked am me with an odd respect. I've been working my tail off for these thirteen years, bagging every soul, making sure they get to the judge on time. I earned this vacation with blood, sweat and tears....mostly blood and sweat.

Unfortunately, not everyone thought so. As I was cleaning up my desk to clock out, Solemin Howitzer, the worst boss this side of Mississippi, started towards my desk.

I could tell this would be trouble before he even opened his mouth. "You're being reassigned. Pack your shit and get the hell out of my office." Without a chance to respond, he slams a folder the size of a dictionary on my desk and walked off. I could have sworn he was smiling.

With a sigh, I slumped back into my chair and flipped through my file. All the paperwork for reassigning me was there, filled out to the dot. Only thing left was the location. Seems I get to pick where I was going. ' How thoughtful... ' I thought, then grabbed a pen.

Looks like I got two options...

Ooh, I love CYOA's. Though, is this an original story, or based on an existing universe, if I may ask?

It's an original story now, considering people choose Haven, which is an original setting. Making it up as I go, Woo!

I checked Haven with a swipe of my pen, and then sighed as the papers in front of me vanished in a puff of smoke. Nothing left to do here but clean out my desk and say goodbye to everyone. ' Where is everyone? ' I asked myself as I left the office. I hadn't seen anyone since I was given the file.

As it turns out, I was one of the only people to not know. As I walked down into the lobby, I was surprised to see most of my coworkers standing around a large cake. ' Seems I'll be missed ' I thought with a smirk before going to enjoy the party.

' Well, that was a fun way to spend my day off. ' Pulling myself up off the ground after a party to make Steve jealous was not something I would forget any time soon. Shaking myself awake, I had to leave a few of my old coworkers snoozing on the floor.

Getting to Haven was pretty easy. As it turns out, someone was waiting for me. As I walked out of the building I saw a rather well dressed man with a pocket watch who approached me immediately.

"Ah, seems you were having a good time." The man said, closing a pocket watch and sliding it into his pocket. "Come with me, we'll see what we can do about any sort of hangover you have." He said and started walking away. I had to run to catch up.

The man and I walked a little while, but nothing was said until we reached my new office. As we walked up to it, my mouth ran faster than my brain.

"My office is a log cabin?" I blinked, standing with my mouth agape as the well dressed man handed me the keys.

"It's all yours. I'll see you about your uniform later." The man said and left. Before I could turn, he was already gone.

' Well then. What now? ' I mused, staring at the keys in my hand.

Next move:

' Best stop hanging out here before I start catching flies in my mouth. What's behind door number one? '

Nothing could have prepared me for what lay inside the cabin I had just been given the keys too. Just stepping inside was almost breathtaking. I knew that the offices are always larger on the inside this side of the death, but this was massive. The first room made my old office look like a mouse hole in the wall. I could put everyone I knew from my old office in here and still have room to fit two pool tables without anyone getting cramped.

"Holy office space batman." I chuckled to myself, looking around the room, my eyes falling to the filing cabinets that lined the back wall, and than over to the single desk in the room. Compared to the size of the room, this desk was downright small. It was bigger than what I was used too, but there was a sense of loneliness to it. It really drove home the point that I was alone here.

Of course, that feeling left as soon as I walked through the office and found out there was a hallway in the back. ' Just how big is this place? Every step just leads to another! ' I wasn't sure whether to be curious, confused, or both, but all objections were silenced when I found the path split into two directions. One said Armory the other Living Quarters. Unfortunately, the armory was locked up tight, as it should have been. I figured someone would give me the key to it soon enough. I mean, what kind of place didn't arm someone taking in the souls of the dead?

With that thought in mind, I passed into the Living Quarters, just to be blown away yet again. In life I was middle class at best. As a Reaper, that didn't change much. To me, the Living Quarters were a dream come true. A flat screen TV bigger than I was in the wall, surround sound speakers set up around a couch that was bigger than my old bed.

"Someone liked their luxury." I mumbled to myself as I walked under the arch separating the kitchen and the entertainment. Just like the other room, it looked like someone spared no expense in making it with things I hadn't seen before joining the Reapers.

' Man...I don't even want to know how much this cost. ' I thought to myself as I checked the fridge. Opening the door was like opening a blast chiller, and judging from the fog that rolled out of it, I wouldn't be getting a bit to eat any time soon. "Wonderful job Reapertech. Once again, your technology amazes me." I said sarcastically, shutting the door and walking back to the main part of the room, where the couch and TV sat.

As much fun as screwing around here sounded, I was pretty sure I wasted enough time looking around. Putting the keys in my pocket, I made my way back to the office to find...

Sorry for taking so long for this update. My buddy and I went paint balling then saw a movie, and I've been recovering most of today. Anywhoo, on with the show!

As much fun as screwing around here sounded, I was pretty sure I wasted enough time looking around. Putting the keys in my pocket, I made my way back to the office to find a new girl sitting on the desk I had passed on the way inside. I was momentarily confused as too how she got there, though the questions were squashed as she held up a key ring similar to mine.

"Ah, so the Fancy man let you in." I said, recalling the fact I never got a name from him. Probably should have asked that.

"You mean The Raven?" The girl asked, jumping off the table. She started walking over to me, which gave me a good chance to look her over once. Barely a head or so smaller than me, it would be hard to tell she was a girl if not for the voice. In her jeans and her shirt, she could easily pass for male, female, or anything in between. I shifted my view to her face just in time to see her eyes shift away. Looks like I wasn't the only one sizing up the opponent.

' Good to know she doesn't underestimate me... ' I smirk with the thought as she moved to stand before me with purpose, but no urgency. "He gave me the key to the door and the armory." She said, holding up the key ring, showing me the same two keys I had, along with a third, much more modern key.

"So, I guess that means you're my partner?" I ask as she slid the key back into her jeans.

"Yeah, looks like it." She sighed, sounding like she expected something...different. Hell, she almost sounded disappointed. "I'm Ali Reily. Who are you?" She asked, offering a hand.

"I'm..."

Write in time boys and girls! What should our protagonist's name be?
Let's keep the names appropriate, shall we?
