^ if we did that, I would suggest Rosalina and Luma as the last image, just so people get the idea of the puppet from the first two images.
That's what I suggested a while ago, and I still think it's the best course of action.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."How about something of Kankuro◊?
Already suggested, plus it's not very illustrative of the trope.

....I'm starting to think we might have a problem bigger than just trying to find a suitable image for this trope.
I think it might be fundamentally impossible to convey this in a way that doesn't look like the more literal puppet trope. Because this is about gameplay: about controlling a character who controls another character. Without having the controller in your hand it always going to look like it's just two characters. Or a literal puppet. Trying to avoid a literal puppet makes this unpicturable, imo.
I think a collage that includes a puppet picture was suggested, with another suggestion being said puppet picture being the top-most picture while the other pictures demonstrate non-puppet Puppet Fighters.
Specifically, posts #51 and #52.

I have to say, why not try a decent image of the Ice Climbers in action? It may be a downplayed example in practice, but a decent image of them actually fighting in a Smash Bros game could convey the trope on their own.
I'm going to try to make a collage for this. All I need is a good example from a game that's not a fighting game. If anyone has a good picture for that then I'll put it in.
Well reading the description, funnels from Dynasty Warriors Gundam games would fit [1]◊
^ Don't see anything that says any of those characters are being controlled by something else. Perhaps you need to be familiar with the source to understand why it is an example.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Everything suggested is JAFAAC hence why the collage was suggested. I was just puting forth an idea for a non-fighting game example.

That is not true. In most of the other suggestions, it is obvious that it's an attack-by-proxy. A collage was suggested because this takes many different forms. That would rarely be a cure for JAFAAC.
I prefer a single image, though.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Clock is set.
Clock's up; locking for inactivity/lack of consensus. No action is to be taken based on this thread.
I'd suggest using multiple images to provide a complete context for the trope. Like how Slippy-Slidey Ice World does it.
Top Image: Rosalina and Luma. It's one of the best suggestions in this thread but, without Smash Bros knowledge, it might think the Luma is a projectile.
Middle Image: Touhou Alice. Demonstrates the trope well but, alone, some might think the trope is about literal puppets.
Bottom Image: A non-Fighting Game example. Banjo Kazooie, Pikmin, Overlord, Crash Bandicoot: Twinsanity, Yorick from League of Legends, Zelda: Spirit Tracks, and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne all come to mind.
