I've seen Brave described as "Pixar trying to do Disney and not really getting there". But I guess "trying to do Disney and not really getting there" is the Dreamworks style.
Fresh-eyed movie blogIm really sorry for the rude vibe I may give by saying this, but can we please just stop immediately associating Dreamworks with low quality and "Trying but not really getting there". Kung Fu Panda, The Prince Of Egypt, How To Train Your Dragon, dont "Try to be Disney", they have their own unique spin and they succeed amazingly. Sure, KFP 2 was REALLY lacking and the rest of their ouvre is EXTREMELY lacking but GOD.
Sans the Whole "Dreamworks is mild and mediocre" I love that even people that like Brave admit is really mild and mediocre.

Katzenberg co-founded Dreamworks when he got passed over for a promotion at Disney and made it the mission of the Animation division to out-Disney Disney. He arranged for his pet project The Prince of Egypt to get a non-competitive release weekend by threatening to put out Antz a couple of weeks before A Bug's Life.
I can see a little bit of Monsters, Inc mockbusting in Shrek, but fortunately they put together a team that made it their own.
Fresh-eyed movie blogEVERY starter studio earns its success by first copying whatever everyone else is doing and then they detour into their own identity.
OK, sorry to have brought up Dreamworks.
For the record, I liked the Shrek movies, did not watch much else. As for Pixar, I mainly watched The Incredibles (a dozen times), the Toy Story movies and Brave (which I did not find mild nor mediocre BTW). I can hardly be considered an expert.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.I'm hoping it turns out better than Big Hero 6, which while a good and fun film wasn't as good as The Incredibles and suffered towards the end.
Big Hero 6 felt like Disney trying to do Dreamworks and not really getting there.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. That's a fair assessment. Maybe Marvel would be a better fit for Dreamworks.
Fresh-eyed movie blogCmon that's just really stretching it! Shrek, love it or hate it, was its own thing. I understand finding Dreamworks films lacking but that's just wrong. Sure, Antz was an extremely obvious attempt to copy Pixar. But that's that! God!
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.Shrek wasn't so much copying Disney as making fun of Disney. Which actually did feel like a refreshing change of pace, at the time.
I didn't write any of that. How about Shark Tale?
Fresh-eyed movie blogShark Tale was actually the opposite, Dreamworks Copying Dreamworks. As in, its the crowning example of all the negative stuff associated with Dreamworks and actually making a movie like that. I do like Shark Tale anyways, but its the one movie that actually does fit all the complaints people have with Dreamworks ... sans copying.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.I think s/he means in the general principle of Dreamworks following Pixar's fish movie with a fish movie on their own... I know it has nothing to do with Finding Nemo beyond that, but Antz wasn't particularly similar to A Bug's Life beyond being about ants either, so...
Yeah, It occured to me when I finished my post.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here. When Pop Culture Happy Hour wants to describe something written by executives trying to be trendy, they invoke "You da ant".
Fresh-eyed movie blogIm so grateful that you didnt put "Dreamworks" somewhere in that sentence. Im actually not that big a fan of Dreamworks, but I hate the way people treat them. Especially if they praise Pixar in the meanwhile as if they were flawless and beyond criticism.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here."You da ant" in particular is an example. Not endemic of any artists, just a trope codifying event.
Fresh-eyed movie blogI see, Im glad.
I also thank the member that said Brave wasnt mild and mediocre, because he didnt associate Dreamworks with those qualities...lol
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here. Some actual news for this thread other than bitching about Dreamworks, which is a different company from the one that makes this franchise:
http://collider.com/incredibles-2-is-brad-birds-next-movie-talks-directing-star-wars-movie/
"So, can Bird confidently say The Incredibles 2 is his next project?
“Yeah it feels like it to me, yeah.”
That better not be aimed at me.
Discord: Waido X 255#1372 If you cant contact me on TV Tropes do it here.If anything, I'm the one who brought up Dreamworks, and it was only some side comment while discussing Brave anyway (which I liked).
I'm currently wondering whether to go see Tomorrowland when it's out. The trailers I saw and the fact that it's Brad Effing Bird directing are two very compelling arguments, but I have bad memories of movies adapted from a Disney attraction.

Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.I like/d most of those movies as a kid and rarely distinguished Pixar from Disney. Other than the last 6 Dreamworks/Disney films I've ignored - let's say Frozen, Big Hero 6, Depicable Me - I don't have a problem with either company.
-let the hatred resume-
The people who made Madagascar, though - if I never hear I'd like to move it, move it again, it'll be too soon. I hated that film. That, Cars, and Brother Bear, all of those things can die in a fire.
Tommorrowland looks neat.

Stupid question, but I take it the "leaked" Incredibles 2 plot was a farce?

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!I dearly hope it was anyway. Given that Bird's answer to it was along the lines of "I'm Brad Effin Bird, do you really think this is what I plan for the movie?" I'm inclined to think it's the case.
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.I like Brave better than Up (which, after the first ten minutes, isn't that great, even if it's still rather solid), Ratatouille (a movie that I somehow fail to connect with every time), Monsters U or A Bug's Life. It's nowhere near the peaks of Wall-E, The Incredibles and Finding Nemo, but it's still solid mid-tier Pixar in my book.
I too found myself actually liking Brave, although the trailer did absolutely nothing to make me want to see it, and I ended up watching it on TV some day while thinking it was a very tame Dream Works, utterly failing to make the connection with the fact that I was watching a Disney-owned channel.
