Following the defeat of the dread serpent Apophis, The East Academy returned to normal without very much of a hint of further events. The administration returned to their duties, and students learned during the six months intervening as best they could. Things changed, others stayed much the same, but for some of the students who fought against Apophis, nothing could go back to normal.

But for a new generation of incoming students, the dread of Apophis' Sundering of the World is unknown and forgotten, wiped from the world, though the battle with the cult itself is remembered and well known. The young students, as usual, are ambitious, cunning and resourceful, and aim to make this year their best.

That is you, new applicants.

As the peace continues, a new tournament has been declared by a corporate baron of shipping and transportation, Sir Gabriel Mostel. Aimed at selecting representatives from the new generation of duelists, Gabriel hopes to uncover talent and capability, as well as making himself the one to crown a Duel King with his own jewel-carved King's Crown.

He returns!

  • Name: Sigmund Diabola
  • Age: 18
  • Gender: Male
  • Appearance: In terms of appearance Sigmund hasn't changed much he still has white hair but it has grown longer and he has started keeping it in a braid, Sea Blue eyes, He has grown to 6'. His normal attire is a black trench coat however it has really seen better days, white linen short sleeved shirt, denim jeans, black hiking boots and black fingerless leather gloves. He also has a single card shaped locket around his neck, the few who have seen him open it saw a single strange card which he claims is a memento. Built quite lean he does have a fair bit of muscle and carries himself like a soldier.
  • Personality: Open, honest and supportive Sigmund is easy to make friends with and is very quick to trusting. He is however a rather good judge of character. Because of this he often found himself leading at the forefront of the duelists who faced Apophis though he still has no idea how that happened, although he does admit that it was most likely that he hates the idea of his friends getting hurt. Despite this he does admit that he can be quick to temper; this only really comes to play when his friends are threatened or hurt, when he's ignored as he considers this extremely rude and when he is betrayed. He is also smarter than he looks or acts.
  • Bio: He is one of the duelists who faced Apophis before. Son of Martel and Rane Diabola he was born into a wealthy family who ran a large manufacturing company, He has however denied himself a comfy lifestyle in favour of a more militaristic one, claiming he wasn't family head nor was he the next one (That being his older sister Saria who is also a duelist.). Receiving combat training from both his grandfather and the duel spirit who stands beside him, he was trained in three different martial arts although he hasn't mastered any of them. This upbringing combined with a self sacrificial and protective nature meant that he often stood at the forefront of the duelists meaning that he at times became a pseudo team leader almost. He trusts each of his friends who fought alongside him and wouldn't trade them for the world.

So… I'm considering temporarily taking a break from Peter- playing a new character for awhile and then bringing Peter back when it feels appropriate. The new character would possibly be written out then, or possibly I'd be controlling him and Peter separately.

Thoughts on that?

[up] if you go by rule book 60. But I'd advise against ever playing that many.

Depends on the deck, actually. Mermails and Lightsworn/Self-Mill decks can work with 60.

(Disclaimer this is not me trying to tell people how they should build their decks or play the game, and I apologise if what I say sounds like I am)

Not really as the point of a self milling deck is to gwt specific cards in the grave and having more cards means you are less likely to mill or draw what you need (for example lightswarn has 2 key objectives put 4 names in grave and draw as many J Ds as possible you will struggle with objective b in a 60 card deck)

But to each their own.

Actually 60 card LS decks also run a lot of Chaos monsters, things that can be activated in the grave and things like Lightrays. The goal isn't to mill 4 names, it's to mill period. Plus the fact that they're millin' 2 or more cards per turn essentially cuts their deck in half.

Mermails are another story. Not too long ago it was common to see players run 50-60 card Mermail decks because of the sheer amount of search power they have. Their signature trap tutored a monster out of the deck and the monster they normally tutored out could also tutor out monsters from the deck. Said trap was also searchable through several monsters effects.

So ultimately it depends on the deck and the build. The general consensus though is to run 40 cards or as close to 40 cards as possible as that does maximize the chances of drawing what you need.

An unrelated tip: Draw cards essentially let you run smaller decks, seein' as you'll usually activate them right away when you draw them. 3 Upstart/Duality reduces your deck to 37. Charge of the Light Brigade lets you run 34 because it mills 2 cards.

It doesn't matter now, I've decided to stick with my current deck for speed's sake.

Two other things though: First, I came up with a custom card recently that Nick has approved and we've playtested on DN:

  • Name: Alien Hypno, Beta Form
  • Attribute: Water
  • Type: Reptile
  • Level:* 3
  • ATK/DEF: 1000/0
  • Effect: During your Main Phase, you can select 1 monster your opponent controls with an A-Counter(s), and take control of it while this card is on the field, you may only control one monster at a time. During each of your End Phases, remove 1 A-Counter from the controlled monster. If all A-Counters are removed from the monster, destroy it.

Also, who'd like to join me at the commentary table for the tournament?

[up]Um I actually have a few design issues with that card. The lack of a 'Once per turn' claus means you can spam it multiple times a turn and takeover your opponents entire field. Two, the fact that the monster is destroyed is kind of overpowered as well. Lastly the card itself doesn't even work as it states you can only control 1 monster while it is on the field. So with that condition it means that it's effect cannot be used at all. The card needs to be reworded and balanced properly.

Barrin' those problems it's essentially an unbalanced Alien Hypno and does not need to exist. Truth betold taking over an opponents monster is a very powerful effect and should be balanced properly. That's why Hypno was a Gemini Monster. You had to play it and wait for a turn before you could use it and it was likely takin' out before then. Honestly, I don't even think Beta should exist. You say you play tested yet none of it's glarin' problems have seemed to be addressed. It's not even really been 'designed'. You just took Hypno, gave it an Attack nerf (which is ultimately irrelevant) and dropped the Gemini status which is what made the card balanced in the first place.

Also I'd gladly join you in the commentators box! ^_^

By playtested, I mean I've used it in several duels, and while it's certainly been useful, it never reached the point of gamebreaker.

Removing the Gemini part was the whole point. I really like Hypno's effect, but the fact that it's Gemini makes it completely impractical to use. Therefore, I weaken it in other ways, like only allowing it to control one monster at a time.

The lack of a Once Per Turn and the weird wording probably contributed. It really does need the Once Per Turn clause.

Otherwise, you can do nasty things involving XYZ Summoning.

He play tested it against my Rank 4 Spam deck. The addition of 3 cards, and taking out one level 4 that could be good in addition for helping get out Gol'gar are also factors. It was never really an entity in our duels.

Yes, because playtesting against a single deck is an excellent way to determine if a card's balanced. No need to see how it performs under a variety of circumstances, let's just focus on one now shall we?

There were other decks I used against Aliens With Beta, but I preferred our bouts involving my Rank 4 Spam.

I'm with stone on this one, even if we ignore the wording problems (by the way instead of just once per turn it really should be the effect of alien hipno beta form can only be used once per turn" other wise it becomes as easy to use as wind up hunter.

I'd honestly feel a lot better if it was until the end phase (same as most control cards) as it's really to easy to summon to have that effect.

Yeah. As much as I like Alien Hypno, I'm gonna have to say no. Since Change Of Heart is a banned card and Beta form is technically even more powerful.

So...are you gonna drop it or no? What exactly do you mean by 'no'?

Also you completely missed the point of Gemini monsters. They are not 'impractical' they are harder to use. They have powerful effects because the player who uses them has to burn an extra normal summon to use them, and they reward a player greatly for doin' so. Your card has made Alien Hypno, along with several other Alien cards, completely arbitrary.

The ATK and DEF nerf is not a suitable way to balance cards. When a monster has low ATK it hampers it's offensive potential. But when that monster can just take the strongest monster a opponent has then it's ATK value is irrelevant and it's offensive potential is that of the strongest monster your opponent controls.

It doesn't help that the card isn't very creative. It's just 'Hypno sans Gemini'. I'm not against custom cards but they need to be somethin' original. In the case of Archetypes they should provide said archetype with somethin' that they need or don't have, not somethin' that they already have but better.
