I made them wider.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittySee, I thought @268 was talking about making the folders wider or longer or whatever, whichever doesn't result in adding more lines, so I wasn't sure why the demonstration seemed to be showing off the reverse...
That looks good.
Looks good.
Check out my fanfiction!Yep, on my laptop it's four folders wide, on my big monitor it's five wide; this is perfect. That said, the issue with page pics displacing folders is still happening.

This new folder system seems to have a few kinks left to iron out, as demonstrated by this screenshot◊ of The Fake Cutie as I was just viewing it (specifically, the part that I highlighted with a red box). Not sure how to describe the problem in words, but the image should be self-evident.
FWIW, I'm using a pretty wide screen (1366 x 768 pixels).
EDIT: Oh, it appears the issue has already been mentioned. Nevermind, then.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.I'm viewing it with an even wider screen (1960x1080) and it looks fine to me.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Yeah, I'm not sure we can do anything about that issue.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyCan we at least know why it happens?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. It's very strange, I wouldn't think the page pic would have any influence on how folders are seated on a page...
Re why: The folder tabs are "floating." That's CSS for text (and text-block items) will flow around the item. The pictures are also floating. The style of the flow-around for the foldertabs is "flow on my right." The style of float for the image is "flow on my left."
Why it only bumps down a half line when it runs out of foldertab space is a mystery to me. The layout engine is seeking the first place to the left of the tab where it can fit the tab in. Evidently the margin at the bottom of the tab on left isn't dealt with properly by the layout engine, so you can't just add margin to the top of the tabs to compensate.
I'll play around with margins, padding and the other parts of the box model, but I think we just up against layout engine bug. Are we seeing it on all browsers?
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyOn this screen (Firefox 27.0.1), the same effect happens, but one line of folders lower than in @282.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThread Hop, sorry. Not sure what the "right" behavior is, but I find the way closed folders are docked to be weird.
Example: if you start with a row of five closed folders, and open (click on) the second one, you get one row with your open folder and a closed folder tab, and a second row with three closed folder tabs. Then if you open (click on) the third one (the first tab on the second row), you get one row with an open folder and a closed folder tab next to it, then a second row with an open folder, and a third row with two closed folder tabs. If I wanted to open a tab that I saw earlier, I might have to hunt for it, since they move around in a pattern that might not be obvious.
Maybe closed folder tabs should always stay in a row at the top of that section, and opened folders appear below that row, and opened-then-closed folders return a tab to that top row? (Instead of closed folder tabs moving, in any circumstance.)

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. That's how they're supposed to work. Your suggestion sounds nice but I don't think it can be done. If it could, chances are it'd end up being more trouble than it's worth. Just scroll to the top of the page and hit "Open/Close All Folders."
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!"That's how it's supposed to work." I know and I don't think it should work that way.
"Just do <this workaround> instead." That phrase is the bane of QA.

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan. If this is an easy fix then that's all fine and good but there's a fair chance that the potential fix may require changing the text formatting thus we'd have to change every page that uses folders. This was a concern at least one person displayed when this change was being made in the first place. I was just presenting an alternative if that is the case.
Although I can't see how this is a problem in the first place, no one else has complained about it, but that's beside the point.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!I don't really see a problem there. What I could see as an improvement would be to have the open folder pop down to its own line, rather than be at the end of a row of other folders. It might be a little confusing to have the folder you clicked on jump down like that, but it makes it much clearer to see which folder is open.
Check out my fanfiction!Just noticed on Characters.Team America World Police (which I just moved from Character.Team America World Police) that when all folders are closed, the "needs indexing" bar slips to the right side of the folders.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat page was improperly typed to start with; I changed it from "examples" to "subpage" and added it to the animated films character sheets index, as well as putting a divider line below the bottom folder, and that seems to have cleared it up, at least as far as I can tell.
Actually, "examples" is correct there; "subpage" is for subpages that take YMMV or Trivia items while "examples" is for extensions of the main work page and character pages are the latter.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHuh...wasn't aware of that. I've changed it back, and I'll keep that in mind for the future.
Quick Question: Is this in the website yet? It'd be awesome if I could use this.
Yes, it is.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind having the folders be 25 - 50% longer...I can't see it hurting anything on a phone, and on modern computers there will still be a lot of space saved.
