Current picture is pretty JAFAAC ((especially to people unfamiliar with Musashi). Like to suggest this picture from Goblins as an alternatives as it's more explicit about wood beating steel. It's just not a katana it you wanna get picky.

#2 does not work, no visual indication that it's a wooden sword.

Goblins' art style makes me unhappy when I see it but if you want a technical reason, it's not actually a katana at all like mentioned.

It doesn't have to be a katana.

I'm not sure just how much flexibility we can have with this; the trope seems to be very specific about bokken vs. the real thing.

Can also be a bamboo shinai, but that's also a representative of a katana. But yeah, I don't think it's about wooden swords in general.

I don't know if it gets across the 'better' part of the trope but there is this from the first episode of Mahou Sensou.

It does lend itself to a "Don't bring a humongous sword to a wooden katana fight" sorta quote... not sure it's right though, doesn't illustrate the "why" it's better.

@9 doesn't look like a "better". For the other images, I have sometimes difficulty seeing a "wooden katana".

[up][up][up] Is there a screenscap where the guy with the BFG gets beaten with the shinai?

The beating blow is a blow to the hand, which causes him to drop the sword. There's probably at least one decent image of him blocking with the shinai, though. Would that be enough to demonstrate? But technically, the shinai gets damaged during the fight, so as a weapon it's not strictly better in this case.

Trope description: "Sometimes they have the impossible cutting power of the steel versions, but usually these are more about the skill of the wielder than anything else" So that might work

Like the first one for showing clear pwnage

[up][up] That first one is good, although combining it with the third with a caption like "The shinai - crushing throats and blocking swords with equal ease." would work for me.

[up]The images look rather grainy. 18.1 in particular is significantly lower in quality than the original version linked in 15.1
