As soon as there was good, there was also evil. For as long as there have been stories of valiant warriors, crafty vigilantes and dashing heroes, there have been tales of their battles against brutish monstrosities, cunning opportunists, and hateful warlords. Which came first, the hero or the villain? How thin is the line between good and evil? Is protagonist or antagonist just a matter of perspective? These questions hardly matter in the grand scheme of things, for as long as there are men, women and others in this world, and as long as they have their goals and ideologies, there will always be conflict and bloodshed between them.

So it has been throughout history, through every war and duel, intertwining myths and legends. And most certainly was it true in the Golden Age of Super Heroes. On the cusp of the Second World War, conniving gangsters and immoral scientists were already preparing their cruel and twisted schemes. Then, as the war went on, the air was filled with epic tales of clashes between morality. Captain America, Wonder Woman, Namor and Doctor Fate all struggled against the likes of the Red Skull, Baroness von Gunther, U-Man and Wotan. When at last the war had finished, and the fate of the world was at rest, it seemed like all the heroes could sleep soundly in their beds.

But over as the years went by, the power of super humans slowly began to resurface. New men of mystery took up the fight, and clashed against villains who could match their strength and skill. The Blue Beetle tangled with Overthrow. The Flash locked horns with the Reverse-Flash. The sullen Batman came to blows with the sadistic Joker. Then, come the present day, the super people returned in force! All the news is abuzz of the costumed warriors in New York and Jump City. Everyone knows about the Iron Man or Power Girl, and how they battled the Music Meister, just like everyone knows about Thor or Starfire, who triumphed against Gorilla Grodd.

But there is one city which is absent of heroes. One dark and derelict spot of land which is no place for someone with noble intent. Hub City, a crumbling town which has earned the mantle of the most corrupt settlement in all the States. Here, the gang lord thrives in the muck of humanity. Even the most barefaced of thieves can persuade the police to turn a blind eye. It's a cesspool of venality, a hotspot of cruelty, and the perfect place for a super-criminal down on his luck to be somebody at last. Because here, the good people don't always win. Here, every dog has at least one day. Here, you can take whatever you want if you've got the money or the dedication. Here, a villain need not worry about the law or justice tripping his feet. Because here in Hub City, there are no good guys.

...it's the bad guys you've got to watch out for.

__________________________________

Good day, once again, and welcome to the newest addition to this superhero RPG family, Justice Avengers. For those who don't know, Justice Avengers is set in a world where the Marvel and DC universes have been rebooted, to become the exact same universe. Characters, locations and concepts are replaced and merged where necessary.

But in this game, things are done a little differently. The setting is in Hub City, the most corrupt city in the US aside from Bludhaven and Gotham. Unlike those two cities, Hub City starts off with no superheroes. Instead, this game focuses on the Super Villains. Got a favourite baddie from the Big Two you want to play? Drop them in here, and we'll see what moral ambiguity comes from it. PLEASE NOTE, you don't necessarily have to play a villain. It's not a hard and fast rule, and we've had people playing criminals in our other, hero-dominated, games. However, if you do pick a superhero we'd prefer if you choose someone who can give multiple villains a run for their money, and/or is grimdark to the point where calling them a 'hero' wouldn't really be accurate.

Anyway, now for the rules. This being a crossover RP of sorts, players are required to select a pre-existing character to play. This means no fandom characters, and really, just about any character trait you can think of has in all likelihood been covered. However, this being a reboot world, you may reboot and reinvent your character however you see fit. I recommend you check out this guy, this guy and these guys for demonstrations of a reboot done right. Also, be careful that your character isn't already taken. Check the other Sign-Up threads (included below) or ask around to see if a character's being used, OR if that character can't be picked up by someone else.

Template:

  • Name: (Supervillain identity)
  • Real Name: (Civilian identity)
  • Gender: (Male/Female)
  • Age: (Doesn't have to be exact. Could be just "Late 20's" or "Teenager")
  • Appearance: (A description is fine, but pictures are preferred.)
  • Alignment: (Good, Evil, or Anti-Hero/Villain)
  • Personality: (How they act around people)
  • Powers and Abilities: (Pretty self explanatory. No ridiculously overpowered superheroes or supervillains, and no completely invulnerable ones either. At least make them feel pain.)
  • Weapons and Equipment: (Same as above)
  • Origin: (If you like, this can happen during the RP itself)

If you like, I MAY allow a small team of superheroes/villains. But this group must be reasonably small in number, and so cohesive and suited to each other they are almost one entity. These instances will be taken on a case-by-case basis, though members of teams such as the Brotherhood of Evil or the Frightful Four are not unwelcome.

Note: As the GM, I, and any co-G Ms I may enlist, reserve the right to select characters as NP Cs. If you were hoping to play that character at some point, then I apologise in advance. BUT, I may see fit to pass the character onto a successor, or at the very least, you might be able to play an Expy of said character.

All that aside, general rules of conduct apply. No godmodding, no autohitting, no meta knowledge, and no generally being an arsehole. Hope you enjoy!

Didn't Magneto appear at one point in New York? I think so, considering the X-Men are there.

Also, reserving Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke.

Is the vampire Jubilee allowed as an option? I liked her as a kid watching the 90's X-Men cartoon, and last I heard, she became a vampire in the comics, and I personally am a fan of vampires. I've been looking her up on the Marvel wiki, and apparently she is not quite a villain, more of a dark hero as a vampire, so I'm not sure how rebooting her would quite work out.

Either way, reserve Jubilee (the vampire version) for me, unless she was already claimed in the other RP's.

  • Name: Deathstroke
  • Real Name: Slade Wilson
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: Late 30's
  • Appearance: Here he is. Nobody has seen him without his mask. Nobody.
  • Alignment: Anti-Villain
  • Personality: Slade is a man who will go to any lengths necessary to complete his mission thanks to his will and determination, which can help him surpass any obstacles, be they physical or mental. He's a man of tatics and methods, always training, always ready for anything that might be around the corner (even if there isn't anything around the corner). Most see him as a cold, heartless monster who will kill without even flinching, but most don't know he never kills without a reason, and those men and women he goes after are monsters in sheep's clothing. Even with all that, Slade can show a compassionate side, especially when it comes to his proteges, often becoming a sort of father to his men, even if he may put them through ten kinds of hell during training.
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Unique Physiology: Thanks to the experiments he subjected himself to, Slade has enhanced senses, reflexes, strength, stamina and intellect (to the point where he is able to think 9 times faster than an average human). He also has retarded aging and has developed an immunity to poison and other deadly toxins. As a minor side-effect, Slade doesn't need to bathe, as his body stopped producing sweat and other residues that might leave him with a not so nice smell.
    • Tactical Analysis: Slade is a great strategist and tactician. Always calculating his opponents moves before hand; even against metahumans he has proven more than a match for them all at once with time to prepare.
    • Combat Expert: Not only did he receive training from the army, but after receiving his enhanced intellect, Slade trained himself on various kinds of martial arts, swords and guns, becoming a master in various fields of each type of combat- although he prefers swords above all.
  • Weapons and Equipment: Slade has access to an arsenal of guns, swords and other equipment he has collected (read: stolen) ever since he became an outlaw. This arsenal is stored on the guarage he uses as headquarters, and it's most important item is the Deathstroke armor, something Slade designed by himself and always uses.
  • Origin:
    • Slade Wilson was a normal man, living in New York, working in the security business with his friend, Billy Wintergreen. The two were Australian, and moved together with their families to New York at the age of six. In the late nineties, Slade was hired for a job to act as security for a woman named Adeline Kane, who had her hand in shady business on New York. Slade was supposed to be the brawny man making sure that no one would hurt her, but when they were led into a trap, Adeline proved that she could defend herself better than Slade. Impressed by her abilities, Slade continued working for her, and Adeline slowly took a liking to him, which eventually led to her training him. Adeline, who had fought in the Gulf War, was quite the expert in various types of warfare, including guerrilla, but she quickly discovered Slade's ability to adapt and to learn, something he had obtained during his rough childhood in Australia with Wintergreen.
    • It wasn't long until the two fell in love and got married, with Adeline eventually getting pregnant. Slade had everything ready- the child was to be called Joseph, and Wintergreen would be his godfather- when both he and his friend were drafted into the War in Afghanistan. Slade kissed his wife goodbye, telling her to take care of the boy, and departed to the battle, where he became part of a team informally called "the Hive", a group of eight extremely skilled soldiers (one of them being Wintergreen), where his codename was Deathstroke.
    • Things in Afghanistan went well- as well as a war could be- with the Hive getting one successful mission after the other. One day, they were going to be assigned to protect a general coming to the field. Their commanding officer, angry at the Hive for hogging all the fame and wanting a quick promotion, "accidentally" omitted pieces of essential information, leading the Hive into a trap by insurgents. Three members and the general were killed, whilst Wintergreen and Slade were captured and taken to different places.
    • The terrorists proceeded to record multiple videos to display their new prisoners, and it was during one of these recordings that Slade attempted to escape. But one lucky enemy managed to flank him and stab him in his right eye, rendering it useless. With only one good eye, Slade remained in captivity, where he was repeatedly tortured for several years. Until, one day, he heard gunshots, and US soldiers burst through the makeshift doors of the cave he was in, there to rescue him. When he asked if Wintergreen was alive, no answer came, prompting Slade to burst into tears, knowing that his friend was most likely dead.
    • Brought back to the United States, Slade was now a different man. While before he enjoyed life and the little moments, now, it seemed like all emotion had been stripped from him. Scars decorated his body, and even as the Vice-President declared him a hero, he couldn't muster up a smile. Until he saw Adeline, and little Joseph, running towards him. Slade hugged the two for what seemed like hours, but his smile faltered when he found out Joseph was mute thanks to a fight between him and some thugs that had happened a few months ago, a fight Adeline couldn't stop because she wasn't at home and couldn't hire a babysitter. Slade immediately placed the blame on his head: if he had tried to escape one, two, three more times, maybe he could have been there to stop his child from losing his voice. So the first thing Slade did that night when his wife and child were asleep was track the thugs and make them disappear, all in the span of a few hours.
    • Although his wife and son were now joyous at having him back, Slade just couldn't feel anything anymore. He'd just silently nod or hum a yes or a no depending on what you asked him. Things he loved doing with his wife became useless trips to the park or to famous landmarks. And one day, when his wife brought up the plans they had made before he was drafted, plans to start a family, Slade found out he couldn't muster up the hope or the strength to make his wife's dreams come true. He was a shell of the man he had once been.
    • Until, one day, he received a letter. While on a few visits to talk shows- few visits because most shows, be they news or talk shows, were focusing on the newest superhero in town, Power Girl- he was approached by the representative of a laboratory (he doesn't remember the name, something to do with stars) with a proposal. They brought him to their headquarters and showed them their plans: to create metahuman supersoldiers based on Captain America. And who better to do this than America's latest war hero, Slade Wilson? The man just went along with the plan- he could use the money- and strapped himself to a chair as a random assortment of chemicals were injected into his body. He fell into a deep slumber that lasted for fourteen hours, but when he woke up, he felt different. He could easily lift a car with a hand. Bullets didn't even hit him. He was no longer a man, he was a super man.
    • The scientists explained to him how the effects of the chemicals were temporary, and his powers would slowly fade away as time passed- all he would have to do is come back, take another dose and he'd have them back. He asked if these chemicals could do something to the people around him, and the scientists assured him that as long as they kept the level of the chemicals on Slade's body at a minimum, he'd have all the powers and still be able to kiss and love his wife without fear of giving her some horrible disease. And when he returned home, he surprised Adeline by taking her to their favorite place, announcing he was once again the man he was before. He started teaching his son how to defend himself, and the family soon celebrated as four months later, Adeline found out she was pregnant. His vigor and youth had returned.
    • Everything was going perfect for Slade, and in his free time, he took up the mantle of a crime fighter, the Terminator (I'm here to terminate your life of crime was his corny catchphrase), defeating evil-doers left and right. And one day, as he returned from another successful attack on a local gang, he found his wife ready to give birth. Rushing her to the hospital, he awaited with Joseph for hours upon hours, and things started looking grim. When the doctor came out of the room, he already knew what he was about to say. Adeline and the baby had died... but not because of natural reasons or spontaneous abortion. Apparently, it was because they had contracted a sickness from some rare chemical, the exact same chemicals the scientists were injecting in him.
    • Without even seeing the bodies, Slade left his son with a friend, and rushed to the labs, bursting in and demanding an answer. That's when he found out that the scientists were secretly upping the dosage, in the hopes of having Slade develop more powers- permanent ones- which were what led to the death of two members of his family. Tearful and angry, Slade wanted to find out why, why they were doing this. And believing they had the upper hand, the lead scientist explained: they wanted in on the superhero business. They wanted to create their own Power Girl and then be the ones to market it to the public with toys, and Slade watched as images revealed that the crimes he had been stopping were fabricated by the labs in the hopes of giving him the courage to become a famous crimefighter.
    • Adeline and his child had died so these bastards could make money off him. That was it. Slade clenched his fists and started destroying everything in his sight, and just to make sure he wouldn't be stopped, he injected himself with more of the chemicals he found on the base, hoping to gain enough powers to make the scientists pay. But the chemicals reacted differently, and instead of getting stronger, Slade's body started developing enhanced reflexes and a much more advanced intellect. He felt like everything was so much easier to learn and store. Like he could just read a book and become an expert. Like there was no piece of knowledge he couldn't obtain. But, of course, this came with its consequences, and he was about to find out about them, because in the middle of his rampage, someone appeared. Power Girl.
    • Slade, enraged, went out on a rant against Power Girl as she just stared at him. And the two fought, and with each blow, Slade felt like his body was cracking into pieces. He fell down, unconscious, unaware that he hadn't been fighting Power Girl, but rather, a team of SHIELD agents with the mission to rescue him. The chemicals had messed with his mind, making him believe he was fighting the one person responsible for everything. Slade was captured and was to be sent to a SHIELD holding facility, but on the way, just by watching the agents, he learned how to bypass the security on the van, fight back and escape.
    • Slade was about to run back to his home, to his son, when he saw SHIELD already there, taking Joseph in. With nothing left in the world, all Slade could do was stare down at New York... seeing people with their Iron Man dolls... discussing their favorite superheroes... dressing like Power Girl... they had all been tricked. They had all been conditioned to glorify these superheroes. They had all become cogs in the superhero industry machine. Slade knew right there and then that it was his job to put an end to that. No secret identities. He would destroy every superhero, be it by killing them or exposing the frauds they truly were, so he could show the world the truth about "earth's mightiest heroes". He designed a suit, a suit meant to protect his body, a suit he wears to this day, as he attacks superheroes, especially those who simply want all the fame, and the people who protect them, taking the codename he used in the army- Deathstroke.
    • He started a gang in Hub City and called it 'the Titans', recruiting people whose lifes had been ruined by superheroes, so he could train them into a powerful squad. But one day, his headquarters was invaded by a man who called himself the Winter Soldier. This man was there to kill him, but not before getting rid of any witnesses, which included the Titans. Once they were all dead, he went after Slade, but through the use of one of his traps, Slade managed to knock the man out and interrogate him, which is when he found out there was someone else under the Winter Soldier persona, someone called Bucky, who didn't know where he was or who he was, but had the potential to become a Titan. After making sure the Winter Soldier wouldn't resurface, Slade took Bucky in and started training him, in order to help him on the fight against the superhero industry.

There we go. Big-ass backstory, added in a section about him meeting Bucky and yaaaay.

  • Name: Anarky
  • Real Name: Lonnie Machin
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: Teenager
  • Appearance: [1]
  • Alignment: Anti-Hero
  • Personality: The Chessmaster
  • Powers and Abilities: Genius-level intellect. Expert hacker. Competent martial artist. Master Tactician.
  • Weapons and Equipment: Electrified staff, bulletproof costume, assorted minor gadgets (for hacking, breaking and entering, escaping etc.)
  • Origin: Lonnie Machin was born to your typical, wealthy "helicopter parents": too busy, rich and absorbed to raise him properly. They had tutors to do that for them. They provided him with everything he wanted... except their love.

The fact he had a genius IQ since childhood was a source of pride for them... and little else. He got paraded during parties, showing off to impress important visitors. Oh, he got the best schools, and soon outstripped his peers. But that only isolated him more.

Like many geniuses in his position, he made up by becoming obsessed with the sciences... except instead of technology -though he was fairly good at that too- he preferred sociology. In particular, he was fascinated with the theory of anarchism: the one that asked whether government was even a true necessity of humanity, or more trouble than it was worth. Interesting question, but how to test it? It wasn't like people were just going to let such radical a change happen willingly.

And then one day, he observed a fight between superhumans in his home of Gotham City. It was then that he realized he could get away with social experiments disguised as "acts of terrorism". Heck, those happened nearly every day now anyway! So, he created the costumed identity of Anarky -carefully crafted to make him look like an adult- and then chose a target: Tony Stark, another rich genius who was unapologetically capitalistic.

Unfortunately, his plan did not go well. Iron Man confronted him, and he was hurt, taking weeks to recover. Then, a bizarre incident (caused by the sorcerer Klarion) reversed the ages of people around America. Now an actual adult, he tried to help Rorschach in her attempt to hold the Mayor of New York for ransom. but that was doomed to failure from the start, and he abandoned her.

Recently, Lonnie has moved to Hub City, a place with much crime but few heroes. Perhaps his experiments will achieve better results here...

Hokay, trying this again...

  • Name: Apocalypse.
  • Real Name: En Sabah Nur.
  • Gender: Male.
  • Age: 5000-ish.
  • Appearance: I'm still not sure what the tubes on his arms do.
  • Alignment: Evil.
  • Personality: Apocalypse has a philosophy of mutant supremacy and survival of the fittest, to him only the strong deserve to survive and anyone that shows weakness should be mercilessly destroyed. Cruel and brutal, he sees mercy and compassion as weak and deserving of death and contempt, while viewing strength and aggression as necessary to survive.
  • Powers and Abilities / Weapons and Equipment: Quite a few. Can be toned down as necessary.
  • Origin: Born in ancient Egypt the young Apocalypse was abandoned as an infant due to his gray skin and blue lips as well as unusual markings on his face - he was found and raised by desert nomads - who would teach him the ways of "survival of the fittest". He was later named En Sabah Nur which means "The First One" in the Egyptian language. As he grew older he saw his tribe attacked by the forces of the pharaoh Rama-Tut and became vengeful, disguising himself as a slave in order to get close enough to the pharaoh to kill him, however when he gained the chance to attack the pharaoh he found himself defeated due to futuristic weaponry - revealing that Rama-Tut was an alter-ego of the time-traveling villain Kang the Conqueror. He survived the assault and tried to flee along with Nur, a woman he'd fallen in love with, but she rejected him out of fear of his appearance - this was the last straw for Apocalypse and he went into a rage.. unleashing his mutant abilities and forcing Rama-Tut to flee as he went on a rampage. For centuries to come Apocalypse would wander the world, making civilizations worship him as a god and manipulating them into fighting wars - testing their strength and justifying his actions by claiming he was improving the world with his actions.. eventually the great warlord stumbled upon Celestial technology and used it to enhance himself further before he put himself in suspended animation, deciding to "sleep" until mutants such as himself were more numerous and he could put their strength to the test as he did so many ancient civilizations.
