Well both of them are denouncing an era of greed and decadent in a somewhat hypocritical Do Not Do This Cool Thing approach. So they are legitimate thematic similarities.

But seriously, Jordan Belfront and James Gatsby are two completely different characters. Gatsby thought he needed to be a certain status to woo a fickle woman while Jordan was addicted to the excess of his lifestyle.
Outside of Leonardo Di Caprio playing a rich man in both movies, they're really nothing alike.

On Real Time with Bill Maher, Bill Maher humorously noted that between these two films The Aviator, DiCaprio is getting typecast as "Super-rich asshole", adding "When do you start work on Bieber?"
