Episode 8: The school invasion was good, I have always liked the design of the delinquents and the reveal at the end was very funny. It was also fun playing spot the witch in the flashback/dream

Episode 8. Which is ridiculous.

This takes her from TV Genius to The Rainman, with her disability being that she's unable to understand what's going on around her unless explicitly told. It's a special kind of stupid.

I like Touko here. Best character in the episode.

A girl appearing from the tree was funny.

That score is just stupid. Gag falls flat.

Are those pincers or tweezers or something? Certainly can't be scissors, with that design.

She's surprised and upset someone didn't want her hair cut?

That's one sleepy girl who loves sweets.

And that's a mother who rolls with it.

She had to dress up as a nurse. I'd chalk that up to her humour. Or just being a little bit daft; take your pick.

"You have to show restraint because she doesn't." That's actually very reasonable.

That's quite a rapid descent into anarchy... Just like flipping a switch. Well, with that chairman, it's kind of expected. But really, what was she thinking? A mini-hat and a mini-crown?

Well, to be fair, she did intend for it to be a more or less honourable one-on-one duel. Though I kinda wanted him to actually hit her, with or without "encouragement" from her. But this is all a farce anyway.

And then we find out pretty much everything was part of the plan. Well, sort of. Seems very much like the hapazard plan a few teens cobble together with a little too little communication between each other.

Episode 8:

  • Heh, I'd like to think that Kazane was channeling Yuuko.
  • Back in her middle school days, Ayaka was very unresponsive unless told. Whoa.
  • Nice seeing the Tower Witches in that flashback. Oh, and the wolf wasn't always a fur coat.
  • Honoka got a check-up in an interesting way. And he's ripped, you say?
  • Crowded breakfast table. And what's with all the sweet stuff?tongue
  • Instant anarchy! And Chronoire's acting principal!? Heh, no surprise she allowed anarchy to happen.tongue
  • Interesting choice of outfits for a rebellion.tongue
  • Ayaka let loose some emotion. Also, even though they're not actively chasing Honoka anymore, Team Tanpopo still can't catch a break.[lol]
  • Turns out it was a plan to make Honoka more popular. The planning...needed more work.tongue
  • Touko and Kanae stuck with Ayaka through the ages, so of course she still considers them her friends. So yes, they can get away with being lewd.tongue

Okay, somehow my phone screwed up and produced two copies of the video when I loaded it in, one of which I promptly deleted...and now I'm stranded without access to my computer and a corrupt video.

Anyway, I listened to the full version of the ED. Still as good as the original, though I must say that it will be a pain to perform live because it's pretty easy to slip up with a chorus like that. I'm surprised they didn't bite their tongues singing that. In character, no less.

Ayaka had less social skills but more restraint as a middle schooler. First was kinda expected, the second...not so much.

Why did Touko and the one who can talk leave anyway?

This is the first time I've seen delinquents in anime do anything that would merit that name.

The Ex-Tower Witches really, really, really suck don't they? 5-1 odds and they can't take one human in a goofy costume? pfft!

Why is there a tank...oh, I give up.

"I was wrong to consult you two."

At first I thought the "Kagiri is super popular" thing was stupid, but at this point it's Crosses the Line Twice and is just hilarious. Same with how pathetic every tower witch but Chronoire is(she was amusing as a middle schooler also).

[up]Best ending of the season IMHO. I like the way they keep adding characters to the chorus also.

One thing I realised is that the animators are not as inventive as the author. The delinquence was crazy in its elements, but they all had the polished, rather subdued movements that I've come to expect from the more conventional studios like JC Staff. Just imagine if Hiroyuki Imaishi had been in charge of the adaptation. The contrast provides some quirkiness by itself, but I can't help feeling that it could have been better.

Even more than the last few episodes, this one made me wonder if the witches are not any more magical than the rest of the students, just more conscious of using it.

A blog that gets updated on a geological timescale.

[up]x2 Ehh...after the first episode, they just kinda devolved into a Goldfish Poop Gang. Crisis-san was a credible threat in episode 1, though Kagari was just too broken...but at least she did do pretty well and kinda forced our heroes into a corner.

Episode 9. In which stuff blows up.

Oh, hey, beach—she's letting them read for him?

I don't like her swimsuit.

Ceiling-Ayaka is watching you.

I think that's less "Spartan" and more "cliff-kicking". And then she actually did kick him off a cliff. Or drop him off the building. Close enough.

Comic relief girls are deliberately comic reliefing. And then they get punched in the face by giant mini-skirt nurse Ayaka.

"I'm the enemy; you tell her." Is there anyone who isn't a Friendly Enemy?

"Go on without me!"
"But you only sprained it."
So that was worse than what happened after? Eventhough she stood briefly after anyway?

That's a subtle way of cheating during the exams...

"Sit and take your exam." Priorities...

About time for things to get serious. Probably.

It's not like I always say stuff that are unique to the episode. Nor that I always say stuff that actually occurs in the episode, such as if I say that someone dies, there's about a 20% chance they actually do die.

Honoka imagines his girlfriend in a swimsuit and that's what comes up with? Even his imagination is boring. Considering who was reading I guess...

"I bet if we touch fingertips we can fly!" - Or summon a giant nurse mini-skirt Ayaka. That works too.

I can see why Kagari came to mind when he was looking for a strong image. Not sure about the rest of it.

The witches conflict is very....civil. Even the WMD.

Episode 9: The Big Bad turns up and everything explodes. I have always liked that the reason there has never been any civilian casualties in the series is not only explained but becomes a plot point. It could be because of the slow release rate of the manga but I thought they spent longer in the cell than that (I really need to read the manga again).

In the manga, Weekend gleefully abuses the fact that, with Kazane powerless, normal people are vulnerable to magical attacks. So what does she do? She detonates countless magical bombs at the evacuation centers normal people have taken refuge in, presumably killing hundreds. All just to tick Honoka off to force him to break the last few seals keeping Evermillion in.

Y'know, in a villain, that always tends to sound more like a disadvantage.

Just read the latest translated chapter. So happy. Spoilers for those that want them:

Weekend Finally gets her shit pushed in by Chronoire. Seeing her plan fall apart was very cathartic. Chronoire literally planned to eat her before Kazane showed up. Unfortunately she was beaten off screen, but not before turning into some crazy alligator hybrid. Something is up with Mikage-sensei. Lots of foreshadowing for something no one knows about. Takemiya being beta. Etc. Etc. Tanpopo being cute.

An interesting post from the author of WCW on the correlation between physical vs. magical durability in Honoka and Ayaka's world. Translated entry begins below:

In the WCW world, the more physically strong something is, the easier it is for magic to affect it. Conversely, the more magically resistant something is, the more fragile it is. Even though there are some rare exceptions, they are only of academic interests.

In the case of Diamonds, because it is a hard substance, magic can affect it with ease. You can magically slice and polish a diamond quickly, easily, and precisely. Diamonds are also really easy to enchant, and as such it is a popular ingredient for making Talismans/charms. On the other hand, to be easily affected by magic means nearly no magic resistance, and can be easily destroyed magically. This is why there are enchantments that can raise magic resistance. Because physical resistance and magical resistance are almost mutually exclusive, there are limits to how they can be stacked. An object has the max capacity for 100% resistance. But if you give it 90% physical resistance, you are limited to only enchanting it with up to 10% magic resistance. And if you TRY to go above the limits the object would be destroyed. Another point is that the resistance of the object can no longer be altered after you give it some other enchantment. So the resistance value of an object is always administered first before any other kind of magic crafting. For something like a Diamond, with natural 97 physical resistances, you can only give it 3% magic resistance. And careless enchanting could accidentally go over 3% and destroy the gem. Thus most of the time people don’t bother and just enchant it with whatever they wanted. The enchanted diamond thus stays weak to magic for its lifetime.

Concerning the cape the Witches wear, they are tailored extremely well to be very durable, and then has magic resistance buff cast on them. In general the resistance value is 30% physical and 30% magical for the average witch cape.

For the extremely expensive witch garb, the more expensive they are the closer they are to the theoretical maximum of 100% resistance. Like 40% Physical and 40% Magical resistance. A 50/50 witch garb is EXTREMELY hard to produce, and require high quality craftsmanship. Of course, there exists specialised anti-magic clothing with 10% physical and 60% magical resist. Those capes resemble Cardigans.
