There are those who say that Detroit is dead. They say there's not a warm body in the Motor City. Those people don't know about the supernatural conflict that's brewing in the streets. Two forces are squaring off for supremacy: on one side is the ambitious warlock John Webb, who's employing the use of all sorts of forbidden magic in an attempt to seize control of Detroit. Opposing Webb, and trying to maintain their stranglehold on the city is the White Court. But this power struggle is only a drop in the bucket that holds Detroit's supernatural woes. Black Court remnants, headed by the self-proclaimed 'Black King' Emilian, are preying upon those who walk lonely streets at night. A coin of the Denarians has made its way into Detroit, containing the fallen angel Zadrophiel. Tensions grow higher each passing day, and a full-on war will tear through the city streets...

...unless someone is brave enough (or crazy enough) is willing to stand up to these threats.

This is an RP for The Dresden Files, where you play a magical (or maybe non-magical) resident of Detroit, which is facing a massive change in status quo. Dark forces are gathering in Detroit, and only you can possibly stop each threat to the mortals that live in the city.

After the dust from the divorce settled, Todd's mother began tutoring him in the ways of magic. Using what he learned, he decided to try hunting down the White Court vamp that tore his family apart. The fight that ensued was extremely close, to the point where Todd was surprised he survived the encounter. He joined with the White Council soon afterwards as a Junior Warden and a couple years later he ran afoul of a cult that brought...something into the mortal realm. Todd barely managed to put the beast down. That fight earned him a spot in the Wardens. It also drove him to drink.

  • Name: Nathaniel Rowan
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 30
  • High Concept: Anglican Knight
  • Trouble: Must Obtain Representation and Affluence With the Locals.
  • Background: Nathaniel is a relatively new player in the Chicago Area, representing the interests of England's Anglican Church and the Anglican Communion of Churches within the United States. He mostly cooperates with the Holy Knights of the Roman Catholic Church, but his group - led by Rebecca Stuart - have interests outside of the connected actions of the groups. First and foremost, Rebecca sent Nathaniel out into Chicago to weed out and destroy any demonic interests in the city, as well as any Warlocks he might find. To this end, he has been sent in to try to aid any Wardens or Wizards of the White Council in their efforts within the scale of the Chicago Area.
    • His backstory, and how he became who he is, is largely based on the goodwill of the previous person in Rebecca's position, that is, Liliana, a sweet old grandmotherly type who adopted the young street urchin herself and raised him. He decided to give back to the Church by becoming a Knight. Even though Rebecca taught and informed him about magic and the Magical Community, he still has his Romantic Dreams, becoming a Knight at the age of eighteen. He was appointed, after around six years of service, to be the Leader of the Anglican Knights, and four months before his mission was assigned, Bishops working for the Canterbury Office sent him the sword Caladbolg as a symbol of his mission and his position, in somewhat similar fashion to how the Holy Knights carry their swords.
  • Personality: Nathaniel has a bit of a reputation within the church as a "perverted old lecher", to which he usually replies that he's not that old. That said, he's rather like a ladies man, but not to the level that he's been in-verse Flanderized into. All the same, he is a very serious man when the situation calls for it. He seems to discard any of his goofy traits when the very hint of danger starts. He is basically a No-Nonsense Nemesis within combat, and a perverted dunce out of it. He really seems to enjoy pairing people up as a hobby, using some of his abilities to make this easier. He claims to be a "romantic at heart, who loves to see young people embroiled in the throws of love..." Another facet of his odd personality is that he has a Protectorate style relationship with head of the local Presbyterian Church, Rebecca. While he steadfastly claims to be just someone who wants to protect her from any and all danger, virtually everyone else around can see what's really going on. While good-natured, when it comes to rules, he is a stickler for them, and follows the Laws to the letter. He has utterly no tolerance for Warlocks, and considers him attacking them an acceptable "greeting"; a very devout man, he refuses to use most magic, except for his one spell of an explicitly holy nature. His main weakness is his inflexible frame of mind.
  • Appearance: Nathaniel strikes a very impressive look for a thirty year old; dirty blond hair combed back nicely, cut short, and obviously well taken care of. He has bright blue eyes, a slightly tanned complexion, and a very muscular build, standing at 6'4''. While not as tall as Harry Dresden, he is still a very imposing figure when he gets going. He wears a black jacket made of bullet-resistant material, a rough cotton shirt, a kevlar vest underneath the shirt, blue jeans with a belt with six buckles on it, and rough looking boots.
  • Status: Knight of the Anglican Church
  • Powers/Abilities:
    • Caladbolg: Nathan possesses something that might just be the sword of Celtic / Welsh Legend, a huge BFS that is easily 2.5 meters long. Caladbolg possesses 5 different methods of attack to make up for being, well, the way it is;
      • Striking Sword: Caladbolg's Slash Wave fragments and slashes the opponent numerous times from many directions.
      • Accurate Sword: In this state, Caladbolg can deliver a frighteningly well aimed attack at a vital spot.
      • Momentous Sword: Using the slash wave of the sword, in Momentous Sword state, Caladbolg can extend the range of its attack in a devastating blast of raw force rather like a Sword Beam, this is the source - perhaps - of the legend of Caladbolg taking off the tops of three hills.
      • Impacting Sword: The sword creates a directional explosion directed at the foe.
      • Lightning Sword: The sword's speed drastically increases, as does Nathan's. In this state, while the mass is decreased and thus, the raw force behind attacks, they come in a lot quicker.
    • Elizalina's Hierarchy: A spell based on the idea of Hierarchy within religion (God, then his Angels, then Humans, then Demons and such). The only spell Nathan is willing to use. Using Elizalina's Hierarchy, if he knows what he's about to be hit with, he can drastically reduce the damage with a holy aura. Or, if he knows absolutely all of the properties of his foe, he can use Hierarchy offensively, massively augmenting the force behind an attack. The problem is that these augmented attacks only work on the target and the target alone; if something else gets in the way, the Aura is dispelled and the attack hits regularly. Defensively, the spell is very flawed in that if multiple attacks are coming in, he cannot defend against them all; only one.
  • Foci/Equipment:
    • Kevlar Vest under his jacket and cotton shirt.
    • six belt buckles on his belt, each one amplifying his strength and resilience.
    • A secondary, short sword emblazoned with and shaped like a cross, primarily useful against vampires and the like.
    • A glock pistol he carries at his side, in case.
    • A case of Holy Water at his side, in what looks like a black bottle with a cross emblazoned on it.

@wtaylorjr

Not to offend, but I've got a few issues with your application for the following reasons:

Trouble: Too Good At What He Does

That doesn't really scream 'Trouble' to me. A Trouble should be a stumbling block, recurring problem/complication/threat, or Achilles' Heel for your character.

Background: The son of a White Council Wizard and a normal woman, Julian Wind is a prodigy. He grew up in the books and playing strategy games and war gaming with the masters. He never lost. He has the ability to see seven steps ahead and he uses that ability effectively. A few years ago he encountered a cult that brought forth a monster that had to be dealt with. The monster was strong enough that it would take an experienced team of wardens to deal with it. A new mage, with the assistance of Julians phenomenal strategic ability managed to defeat the monster. There has been many more calls for help that Julian has answered. Strong people have their eyes on him, he cannot be allowed to fall into an enemy's hands. He is too important to lose.
Yeah, no. First off, the phrase 'too important to lose' is setting off some major red flags. That phrase is supposed to be plot device characters only, not player characters. Second off, the whole bit about him taking down a big scary monster when he was a rookie isn't working for me. Todd almost got himself killed and left his battle in PTSD mode. Finally, the concept of Julian never being defeated and always being 7 steps ahead does not make me think this character is compelling, that's just a Boring Invincible Hero.

Personality: He is quiet and stays in the background. He is extremely shy and introverted. He is lonely. Sometimes he concetrates so hard he cannot hear others speaking to him.
Seeing a lot of repetition and redundancy here. What are your character's mannerisms? How does he talk or interact with other? What does he think about the world around him? Where does he stand in terms of morals?

Foci/Equipment Julian's Mobile Workshop is an old volkswagon bus that is stocked as a wizard's workshop. It is a second workshop that is not as well stocked as his home is. He can use it to brew potions and do enchantments. He keeps on hand several potions that help with some of the effects of the sight. Julian's silver ring is a focus allowing him to work spirit magic. Julian's Left Silver Bracer is a talisman containing a spirit of information. It is a catalog of spirit names and talents. The love playing strategy games of all kinds against each other. Corwin, the spirit, goes into the bracer when he wants. It is like a home for him. Evocation: Spirit/Fire/Air Julian's Spirit Magic includes the following spells Spirit Hand: A spectral hand that does Julians bidding Spirit Shield: A globe of force preventing harm to Julian. Spirit Blade: A blade of force that cuts through things Fire Blade: A Blade of Fire that defends Julian Air Lift: The ability to levitate Control Temperature: Can make an area comfortable
You're very vague as to how these potions aid the use of the Sight. Also, your evocations need more specific explanations. I'm going to say I do not like the idea of the bracer.

Julian knows the names of hundreds of information spirits. He plays strategy games with many of them.
And this is where I say "Absolutely not." Spirits and most other supernatural entities keep their names closely guarded. The idea of Julian having a list of hundreds of spirit names is just flat-out unacceptable.

@Nick Not too many issues, just want to point out a few details:

  • The Trouble and the background are rather contradictory.
  • Could you explain how he got Caladbolg? Speaking of which, Caladbolg belongs more in the Foci/Equipment section...
  • The Hierarchy spell seems really OP to me
  • The hell's a slash wave?!
  • I don't think Caladbolg should come with all those powers. Amoracchius isn't that powerful, and it's freakin' Excalibur! If you want to give it powers, then perhaps you could say it functions similarly to one of the Swords of the Cross.

NickTheSwing Since: Aug, 2009
#8: Dec 10th 2013 at 8:53:05 PM

  • I'll include a section on how he got Caladbolg in the background section. I fixed up the Trouble to relate more to the background.
  • How is the spell OP? It only works on one thing at a time, its hilariously easy to counter - grab a sheet of steel, you just No-Sell'd his attack -, and if multiple opponents attack him, it cannot even be used that accurately. Its also made implicit he needs to see the attack coming to negate it.
  • the air wave left over from a sword being slashed through the air. Its usually negligible, but when its Caladbolg slashing and in the right mode, this airwave turns into a magical attack.
  • It has those Modes to make up for the fact that 2.5 meters translates to a little more than eight feet long. Realistically, would it be easy at all to wield that sword? He cannot even use it indoors.

[Not to offend, but I've got a few issues with your application for the following reasons: Trouble: Too Good At What He Does That doesn't really scream 'Trouble' to me. A Trouble should be a stumbling block, recurring ]

I may have the wrong phrase. Too good at what he does means too good to lose. He is too valuable. Powerful organizations need to control him, or at least monitor him. He has people spying on him and looking out for him all the time. He is one step away from being brought in.

problem/complication/threat, or Achilles' Heel for your character.

[Yeah, no. ]

Yeah that may have been a bit much. I can tone down the monster or up the new wizard he was with to an more experienced one. Too important to lose goes back to my trouble, it was just a restatement. Keep in mind he is nothing like Todd, he is like Shiro of Log Horizon.

Finally, the concept of Julian never being defeated and always being 7 steps ahead does not make me think this character is compelling, that's just a Boring Invincible Hero.

What I tried to describe was a very careful planner, a genius if you will, like Shiro of log horizon. I made him older to give him lots of experience. Just because he hasn't been defeated yet doesn't mean he wont be. I wanted to play a strategic genius, but it is far from what I truly am so I am not describing it right.

I'm sorry, all I got is that he is shy right now, and that he is inattentive at times. I will think more about it.

You're very vague as to how these potions aid the use of the Sight. Also, your evocations need more specific explanations. I'm going to say I do not like the idea of the bracer.

I am still reading the dresden files rpg. I will redo the spells when I am more familiar with the game. The bracer is like a Bob's skull or Jeanies bottle. Just weaker. Julian does not control Bob, or the spirits.

Julian knows the names of hundreds of information spirits. He plays strategy games with many of them. And this is where I say "Absolutely not." Spirits and most other supernatural entities keep their names closely guarded. The idea of Julian having a list of hundreds of spirit names is just flat-out unacceptable.

What I envisioned here is that he knew hundreds of spirits to play with and test his strategic genius with. I did not mean he knew their true names, I only meant that he knew a lot of information spirits and this is how he maintains his strategic edge.

If I'm going to write about a character, I want to enjoy it. I enjoy the idea of a scholarly strategic genius wizard. However I don't know you. I would appreciate it if you could give input as to what is acceptable so I can decide what to do.

@Nick I guess I phrased my concerns about the spell wrong. I'm not really sure what kind of Template Nathaniel's using. Is he a Champion of God or an Emissary of Power? Neither of those Templates get spellcasting, so I'm very confused by how Nathaniel's getting these cranked-up abilities. Yes, I understand carrying an 8-foot sword is no ordinary feat, but bear in mind that he's not a wizard. You didn't see Michael wreathing his sword in lightning or shooting off air slashes because that would be something Harry would be able to do, not Michael.

@wtaylor- having never seen Log Horizon, I don't really see what your going for. The closest comparison I can come up with is Lelouch from Code Geass, who had a number of flaws to offset his intellect- he was super wimpy in terms of physical ability, he was obsessive and arrogant, and he could be pretty ruthless to the point where if he was in the Dresden-verse, he'd break the Laws in a heartbeat if he thought it was necessary. As for the whole idea of the bracer being like Bob's skull, I just want to point out Bob was put in the skull by a wizard that was implied to be a real menace. The amount of magic to bind a knowledge spirit would likely be enough to strain the strength of a Senior Council member. And perhaps you could rephrase your Trouble. If it were me, I would call the Trouble 'Everybody Wants A Piece Of Me' or 'I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watching Me'.

#11: Dec 11th 2013 at 7:21:15 AM

@wtaylor- having never seen Log Horizon,

I highly highly highly recommend seeing log horizon should you have time. Shiro is shy but brilliant. He always fixes his glasses when he means business. He is a magician with weak direct attacks but strong indirect magic, buffs and debuffs. He supports a party, he is pretty much useless without a party. He always knows how to defeat an opponent and can think several moves ahead. He has a complete control of the battlefield ability meaning that he knows the status of everyone on the battlefield and can give the best stratagy during a fight. Here is a link to the english translations http://baka-tsuki.org/project/index.php?title=Log_Horizon and these are short novels. Volume one isnt done yet so start with volume two. Volume one is summed up in the first five episodes of the anime found here, http://www.hulu.com/log-horizon

I don't really see what your going for. The closest comparison I can come up with is Lelouch from Code Geass, who had a number of flaws to offset his intellect- he was super wimpy in terms of physical ability,

Thats Shiro, but not Julian. Julian is average normal human as far as physical fighting is concerned. He does not fight physically as he would probably lose. No skill in that area but no handicap either. He is getting up there in age and he doesn't work out, he plays strategy games with extradimensional entities and studies lore and magic theory, history and etc. He is out of shape, but not crippled.

he was obsessive and arrogant, and he could be pretty ruthless to the point where if he was in the Dresden-verse, he'd break the Laws in a heartbeat if he thought it was necessary.

Julian is not arrogant or obsessive, he is focussed and at times innattentive. However he, like Shiro is ruthless. He does what is necessary to win. He could break the wizard laws if necessary but he does tend to use the minimum force needed to win.

As for the whole idea of the bracer being like Bob's skull, I just want to point out Bob was put in the skull by a wizard that was implied to be a real menace. The amount of magic to bind a knowledge spirit would likely be enough to strain the strength of a Senior Council member.

This spirit is not bound. It comes and goes as it pleases. The bracer is a home/shelter and a communication system so Julian can call him for a game, or he knows where Julian is for a game. Julian is valuable to the spirits too.

And perhaps you could rephrase your Trouble. If it were me, I would call the Trouble 'Everybody Wants A Piece Of Me' or 'I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watching Me'.

Everybody wants a piece of my strategic skill is more like it, and much better than my phrase. That sums it up perfect, or maybe everybody wants to use my skill and prevent others from using it. There best move is to kill me before another takes me. Alone I am weak, with a group, I am very good. Keep in mind he is shy and awkward around humans.

Thanks for helping me improve this character, and for telling me about Code Geass. I am looking it up.

I guess I need a little help. I am looking into making spells, I read about blocks attacks and maneuvers and such. I want to have most of my spells enhance the spells and skills of the others in my party. Some dont, like sleep that lasts a minute or two until someone awakens them. Or a binding spell that holds people in place for a few seconds, a few combat rounds. Or a spell that binds a creature or person and if anyone cuts the binds the person attacking the bind's damage is doubled and applied to the bound person. The bind vanishes and the bound person is hurt very badly heh. Julian has few direct attacks, mostly manuevers, I am reading the rules but having trouble fitting these ideas into water or spirit evocation spells. Light is pretty easy, but I need a blinding spell, one that only lasts for a few combat rounds.

Interest, but with a question/caveat:

What's the ruling on using public domain artifacts of a caliber that isn't, say, Excalibur?

[up][up][up] That's not quite how magic works in the setting. Magic in the Dresden Files universe (if we ignore True Believers and beings on Mab's power scale because they're cheating bastards) is mostly based around energy and Newtonian physics. All of what you're talking about might be doable, but it would require a lot of energy to set up and constantly maintain, and a wizard wouldn't be able to keep that up for long. Approach this with more of that kind of mindset. Some of them might work with a magic framework to with, but it'd still be way too complex for just anyone.

I'm also interested. Edit: Replaced my refurbished Char idea with another. This one is not an refurbished originally ET Idea ;)

Name: Anna Elisabeth “Anneliese” Gärtner.

Gender: Female

Age: 27

High Concept: Junior Veteran Warden

Trouble: Who Died And Made Me Boss?

Background: Anneliese grew up as the child of practicioners, one working as stage magician the other a policeman, in the german supernatural community. Early, her strong talent was recognized and she was inducted as apprentice of the White Council. During her apprenticeship, it was further noticed that she had a talent toward evocation and her natural “sportyness” all supported a further training as Warden. This however meant she just got her grey cloak when the Vampire War started. Barely surviving the first grueling years, she now finds herself in the position where she is considered the “senior” Warden to a bunch of new recruits only barely older than her.

Personality: Anneliese is, ultimately, nice. She will try to be polite and, if the situation permits it, nonconfrontational. She prefers the use of reason to violence. However, the years of War have shown her the foils of being indecisive and the nice girl has grown quite spine of steel, even if it only shows after someone has suitably pushed her as well as a surprisingly strong will. Seeing many of her fellow Wardens and Wizards die has instilled in her a great distaste, one might say hate, for the Red Court and the belief that this war can only end in the extinction of either them or the Wizards. While confident in her own fighting abilities, she is unsure of her own command capabilities. She is willing to assume command if the situation, or orders, require it, but she is far from the sure and experienced command presence a “real” Senior Warden should demonstrate.

Appearance: 1,82 with curly bright-blonde hair and green eyes, fair (and easily sunburnt) skin, slightly broad shoulders and a slim figure. Despite the latter, she is obviously very well in training, making the best use of her body type as she can to the point where her wiry frame is surprisingly dense with muscle. Her face shows high cheekbones and is somewhere between cute and beautiful. When she speaks it is with a somewhat husky voice.

She usually wears a plain black Blazer and matching trousers, sneakers and a white button down shirt and a trenchcoat. Over her shoulders, she carries an outsized billiard Queue Bag containing her sword and other wizard implements. Under the shirt, she will usually wear a black leather corsage. She is sometimes seen smoking cigarretes.

Status:Wizard

Powers/Abilities:

As a fully trained Wizard, she has their usual abilities. She is a bit weaker on the thaumaturgical side than the evocation, for lack of experience. She has an especial talent in shutting other practicioners magic down (assuming moderately comparable power levels and an extant link to them.)
Her Evocation Talents lie mostly in the Realms of Force and Spirit. She has strong talents in creating cloaking veils, but not outright Illusions, as well more subtle uses of that discipline.
Anneliese uses quasi-Germanic for her magic:
  • ‘’Naudi’’: Force-based Magic. Catchall term. note
  • ‘’Naudiaba’’: Force Magic. A Kinetic strike.
  • ‘’Naudibarda’’: Force Magic. Sheates her Warden Blade in Force, enhancing its cutting power even more.
  • ‘’Naudigraipo’’: Force Magic. A kinetomancy spell.
  • ‘’Lindjon’’: Shield Spell. Simple Forceshield type.
  • ‘’Bidreugan’’: Veil Magic. Catchall term.
  • ‘’Laugno’’: Veil Spell. It creates a “Fog of War” around her, making it hard to focus on Anneliese, to fully see where she is and where she moves.
  • ‘’Darnjaz’’: Veil Spell. Allowing her to move very stealthily. Its partially invisibility, partially people not noticing her.
  • ‘’Alba’’: Spirit Magic. Catchall term.
  • ‘’Bertha’’: Spirit Magic. Allows her to manipulate (as in extinguish or create) Light in an enclosed area.
  • ‘’Getam’’: Spirit Magic. A Hyperawareness spell.
  • ‘’Albaporta’’: Gateway to the Nevernever Spell.
  • ‘’Blasa’’: Fire-based Magic. Catchall term.
  • ‘’Kaliz’’: Water-based Magic. Catchall term.
  • ‘’Haipiz’’: Earth-based magic. Catchall term.
  • ‘’Ruson’’: Wind-based Magic. Catchall term.
(I noted those because while she may not have much talent with them, I assume she has words for them if she ‘’needs’’ them.)

Equipment:

- Warden Sword: A Bastard Long Sword, with the usual enchantments of a Warden Sword. The crossguard has been engraved with runes to allow her to use it as a general focus, like a staff.
- Choker: A white cloth chocker with in-worked runes made with grey and black gold wire. It works as “battery” for her ‘’Laugno’’ and ‘’Getam’’ spells. She can cast the spells and leave them running for a while on the chokers saved energy, allowing her to use other spells at the same time. They are not one power reservoir but two distinct, requiring recharging each one specifically.
- Chain-bracelets: A bracelet of three interwoven and engraved chains made out of White gold (Force), Grey gold (Spirit), Black gold (Veils) as specialized foci on her right wrist. - Shield-chain: A chain out of white gold with shield charms on her left wrist. - Ankle Bracelets: White Gold bracelets on her ankles, enchanted to absorb kinetic energy with every movement.
- Leather corsage: Warded to be resistant to both bullets and claws, protects her torso (mainly the gut) to some degree.
- Walther PPK .22 LR handgun. Normal ammunition and cold iron filled Shot cartridges.

She is essentially a member of "Carlos Generation" of Wardens. Normally she'd be at the lowest rung of the Wardens, but now she suddenly is senior to a whole bunch of Camp Kaboom graduates, despite not being much older. Carlos manages this with aplomb...Anneliese not so much.

The idea of her "Fog of War"-spell is that it allows her to fight more indirectly, less face-to-face, as Nick's Knight would. To put in game terms, she's the brute-rogue to Nicks plate-fighter. She fights much more with speed and not getting hit, trusting in "speed is armor", supported by her fog of war and hyperawareness spell.

  • Name: John Charleys
  • Gender:M
  • Age: 42
  • High Concept: Magical Gunman
  • Trouble: Totally incapable of trust
  • Background: John was an (extremely discreet) practitioner in Detroit for awhile, working as a beat cop and investigator by day, making sure to never reveal any of his talent. He gained his powers as a child, descended from a similarly discreet police officer and practitioner. He did his best to have a normal life, going to OSU and graduating with a degree in Law Enforcement. He joined the force at 22, and did his best to deal with the mundane criminal element of Detroit, but as time went on he got a little... worn down. He started taking bribes, believing that he was doing the right thing—that he could trust these criminals to pay him, they'd go on their way, and the local gangs wouldn't be destabilized from too many arrests and get even more violent. That trust was betrayed shortly before the city went to hell—it was decided that after 20 years on the force John knew too much, and he was shot, put into a coma, and sent to the hospital. He has just awoken in the hospital after a week of sleep, with no idea what's going on, but with his gear at his bedside.
  • Personality: That recent betrayal has left a sour taste in John's mouth. He doesn't think people can be trusted unless it benefits them, and even then they'll just betray that trust once they inevitably realize that they could betray him to benefit themselves even more. He's very fastidious about his magic, making sure that he either masks it in the mundane, or that there are only magical beings around, before cutting loose.
  • Appearance: John has aged fairly gracefully. He's bulky and about 6 feet even, with a little graying at his temples and lines on his face. His hair was at one point closely cropped, but it's started to grow a little out of control, along with the beginnings of a beard. His features are rough and battered. The clothes that were left with his gear are some of his favorites—a nice, warm, well-maintained Letterman jacket from his college days at OSU, some jeans, and a pair of workman's boots.
  • Status: Practitioner with no White Council membership. Still technically a member of the Detroit Police Department.
  • Powers/Abilities:
    • John is a very experienced police officer, adept at shooting, running, driving, and fighting both through brute force and superior technique. His hand-to-hand combat focuses on neutralizing his target, disarming and breaking limbs in order to leave targets fully conscious for detainment or interrogation. While guns are, of course, not the preferred route due to the fact that they have a high chance of killing people and all, he's a damn fine shot, and can anticipate and compensate for any instabilities that come from running magic through his gun.
    • John was never that good at Evocation or Veiling, instead deciding to focus on Thaumaturgy and enchantment magic to make sure he was well-prepared before Evocation would even become an issue. Furthermore, because the talent he possesses is fairly low-grade, technology is more or less a non-issue for him.
    • He can engrave a spell directly onto a bullet, filling it with energy that fuels a spell upon striking a target (obviously I need to state which bullets he's prepared during downtime). Known spells include:
      • An electrical blast, releasing a charge similar to the voltage of your average taser.
      • A concussive blast, giving the bullet additional kinetic force to knock people off their feet.
      • A circular charge, releasing a special shaped charge of earth magic to create a circle in the ground and power it up to shut down magical phenomena.
      • Condensation, which draws moisture out of the air and dumps it on a target. This only works if the air is sufficiently humid, or if there's something like mist, snow, or fog to work with.
      • Fire, in case he seriously needs to kill the shit out of something.
  • Foci/Equipment
    • A revolver possessing one half of a seal he created. When he places the other half on a bullet, he can use a spell similar to a tracking spell to attract the bullet into the chambers of the revolver, magically speed-loading the gun.
    • His 1960 Buick Invicta was left untouched in the hospital parking garage out of some mad good luck.
    • A couple hundred dollars in the bank and another forty in his wallet, which also has an ID and a membership card to Costco.

  • Name: Jacques de la Croix

  • Gender: Male

  • Age: 33

  • High Concept: Errant Knight

  • Trouble: Neither Heaven nor Hell

  • Background: Jacques was born in the former French colony of Guinea to an affluent family. This affluence meant that Jacques was mostly sheltered from the rest of his people, and was sent to France as soon as he was old enough to attend boarding schools there. Born with a strong sense of justice, Jacques soon became known as a bit of a firebrand, one who would stand up to anyone whom he believed had to be stood up to, regardless of their position relative to him, which caused no end of friction with teachers and students alike. Though not a violent man by nature, he eventually learned that sometimes, others will stoop to violence if you will not, which fueled an interest in Western martial arts (with and without weapons) and sports that never went away. He did eventually graduate from the Catholic University of Paris with a degree in political science, and was eager to return home.

On the day of his graduation, however, he was approached by a strange, sandy-haired youth who, in lieu of nothing, handed him a sword. Jacques very quickly learned two facts about the sword. The first was that its name was Flamberge, the sword of a not-quite fictional knight named Renaud de Montauban. The second was that the sword was not altogether normal. The sword had a presence inside it. The entity, Balthazar, eventually revealed itself to be an amnesiac angel, banished and bound to Flamberge as penance for a sin it did not remember committing. This exposure to the supernatural world eventually caused Jacques to leave France and travel the world as a protector against the supernatural. It has been six years since that day, and rumors of a Denarian coin, alone in the city of Detroit, was enough to catch Jacques’ interest. The Knights of the Cross were only getting fewer, after all, and though he felt unprepared and unsure, someone had to do some good.

  • Personality: Outwardly, Jacques is a jovial and kindly man who abhors violence. On the inside, he is in many ways a deeply conflicted man. While understanding that violence should never be the first answer, he does nonetheless recognize a ruthlessness and a drive to stand up to evil whatever the cost. A staunch Catholic, Jacques represents ideals that he himself is not sure he can ever live up to.

  • Appearance: : A black man with short-cropped hair, often seen in warm, dark grey clothing, typically a windbreaker and matching jeans. The sword, whenever he has to go around in public, is usually kept in a pitch-black sports bag.

  • Status: Champion of God

  • Powers/Abilities: The only power Jacques has on his own is his faith, which typically manifests in a knack for knowing where he needs to be. The rest of his supernatural power rests entirely with Flamberg and the angel that resides within. Balthazar, much like the Denarians (though he hates to admit this) is capable of imbuing Jacques with power - rather unlike the Swords of the Cross which strip it away. This usually manifests as a glowing suit of armor enveloping his body. However, it is like a Sword of the Cross in the sense that the blade is harmful to most supernatural creatures when swung with purpose.

  • Foci/Equipment: Besides Flamberge, Jacques doesn’t carry much mundane equipment, typically restricted to a cell phone, a cross hanging from his neck, and some emergency medical equipment that he keeps in the sports bag with his sword. Flamberge itself is an Oakeshott XIIIa-type longsword about 1.1 metres in length, and is otherwise without much ornament.

  • Some thoughts here at the end, because there are a few things that need clarification, and it’s difficult to weave them into the text above:

  1. Balthazar’s power is severely limited, bound as he is by the sword, even more so than your workaday Denarian. The armor doesn’t make Jacques invulnerable so much as it just acts the way body armor usually does in the Dresdenverse - it’ll stop a few bullets or a few sword swings, but it’s not impenetrable.
  2. Balthazar himself doesn’t really know what side of the whole divine rebellion he was actually -on-. This ties into the Trouble - for all Jacques knows Balthazar could be a fallen angel and leading him towards damnation, which only preys on his own insecurity and repressed anger.
  3. He’s not meant to be strong enough to take a Denarian on alone. Even if it was a relatively mook-y one, he would probably still get his arse handed to him. ‘’Flamberge’’ is not a Sword of the Cross.
  4. Yes, he’s basically still a Knight of the Cross on a shoe-string budget and with some balance tweaking ;)

@Taco & Math: Looks good.

@3 of 4: Not sure if possession of a Warden Sword fits your High Concept. The Warden Swords stopped being made after Dead Beat.

[up]Yes, which is part of the point. She is among the last new Wardens to receive one. The last Wardens trained before the Reds killed of the majority and Luccio kicked off the Camp Kaboom accelerated training. The sword makes it plain to the latter that she is not one of them but (at least for them) just as much a member of the "Older" Wardens like Carlos, while the real "old guard" pretty much consider her a rookie herself.

Eh, I'll concede.

Also, for anyone else who wants to join, I probably won't accept your application if its for a wizard due to the number of wizards already registered. Lets get some diversity in here, people.
