There is a lack of military shooter MMOs:

What?
The many of the so called MMOFPS games are actually just a bunch of lobby and session games, with no persistent world.

Firefall is both a shooter and has a persistent world but it is also considered sci-fi.

Personally, I think the reason why it is so hard to translate something like Call of Duty or Battlefield into an MMO is that the setting and backstory doesn't really permit that element of anarchy.

That is to say that there are cops and they do a pretty fine job of keeping the streets safe from people armed with military grade weapons, people like your character for example.

Sure you could be a criminal and embody the anarchy. But you are not playing as a criminal, you playing as a soldier of the armed forces of so and so country. So unless you want to be causing diplomatic crisis's, you are only going to the places that you are to be deployed.

Of course, one can do what Ev E does and isolate that pesky law and order to just one region of the game world. But then that implies civilization has already gone to shit, and all those spunkgargleweewees take place in a world that is about to go to shit.

Lazy?
Extra Credits touched on the idea at one point.

I kind of thought MAG attempted something similar. It had a potential 256 players on one map, all fighting towards different goals, contributing to the battle as a whole, which in turn can influence the entire war (between 3 factions).

Too Good to Last, sadly.

Watchmen of the Apocalypse
The PlanetSide games did this.

"Who watches the watchmen?"
What?
The closest one can get is a bunch of PMC running around doing black ops stuff.

Of course, they can't openly carry their weapons around, except in shady areas where the cops aren't looking.

Isn't Destiny set to be something like this?

What?
Isn't Destiny taking place in a world after some apocalypse?

That isn't what I am looking for.

I am looking for a game that takes place in the near future at most where most of the present day nations still stand, yet still allows for a guy with gun to go globe trotting to whatever part of whatever continent he or she wants to fight for interests of his or her nation.

Tried Blacklight Retribution? Yeah, it's still sci-fi, but it fits into the operator mold of modern military shooters.

What?
Blacklight Retribution is lobby and session though.

EDIT: I think the closest one can get is an MMO about spies. They do a lot of globetrotting and it is likely that they will kill people for their country.

If you want persistence, then play PlanetSide 2.

I think you're asking for something that not even non-MMO MMS games have.

What?
Of course non-MMO MMS don't allow you to enter an inn or greet a shopkeeper with your guns drawn.

They don't have an inn or a shopkeeper because those things are unnecessary in a lobby and session.

And that's why a modern-themed MMOFPS will never happen. An Adventurer Is You is archaic and obsolete in the modern world.

Modern warfare themed shooters with real world forces are more plausible because global politics be a fickle and unpredictable thing. There's a lot more truth in say the Russian VDV conducting an airborne operation over Virginia than say Blackwater going all N.G.O. Superpower.

Do we really need more modern military... anything?

I think the market is saturated enough. If you want to play an MMOFPS, then just play Planetside 2.
What?
Yeah I really wanted to see how a modern day "adventurer" would work out.

I could write about a story about an fantasy adventurer suddenly finding himself or herself in the middle of a transition to a world of extensive law and order much like ours.

Possibly. I got an idea for a modern warfare type thing but it's got quite a few twists and some "personality" injected into it. (And a very major possible controversy and it's not how you think.)

I say one of the elements of an MMO is that law and order doesn't apply to the player either because the law is weakly enforced, the player character has been granted exceptions by the society, or is actively breaking the law.

So you want a persistent game world modeled after the earth, with multiple other people where you can walk around with weapons all day and get in fights?

Uh... good luck with that.

Hearthstone: Miracle Rogue, Murlocs

This. Modern military shooters are the mainstay of the creatively destitute.

What?
@Funden

What? You get to rain fireballs in the middle of Stormwind and the ones with the engineering profession get to chuck bombs at your faction's shopkeepers without the shopkeepers even flinching. No scratch that you get to chuck bombs at your own king without punishment!

Can't that transfer over to some game world set on Earth in the near future?

EDIT: Look maybe it might work if you get to fight President Action who is capable of soaking up 7 tons worth of bullets.

The focus of my statement was on the "persistent modeled after earth" bit. That'd be incredibly hard to do.
Modern: Urza Tron, Living End, UR Delver
Hearthstone: Miracle Rogue, Murlocs
What?
Fine maybe some world that is like modern day Earth but still has "adventurers" running out, and probably throwing grenades around for fun.

World's Best Powered Armor
I don't know if I'm misinterpreting it, but that sounds like Grand Theft Auto V online. People just go about their own business and occasionally mess with the other players (unless they're doing a mission).
What?
But Grand Theft Auto has criminals as the player characters.

I want soldiers as the player characters. Or spies.

Probably the latter.

Curse you Sony! Why did you have to cancel The Agency?

Sorry to necro this.

But what would be a MMS's equivalent of these?
