Hello, and welcome to our little Civilization RP game.

The idea of this RP is to have a friendly game of Civilization- but with the players using civilizations from TV shows, movies, animes and more. Be it the Fire Nation or the Empire or Galifrey, you are about to embark in a game where your objective is to lead your civilization from the beginning of human history straight to the future.

Rules and Mechanics

Let's talk about how the game works, alright? First, some stuff to get out of the way.

  • Everyone starts in the Stone Age with the same units and the same buildings- basically, the only thing that differentiates the nations at the beginning are their leader, their people and their objectives.
  • While this RP will have a huge focus on mechanics, that doesn't mean you shouldn't put in a bit of, you know, R Ping. If you use an atomic bomb, write down the Senate or Parlament or Dictator of your country deciding to do that. If you take over a rival nation, write about your soldiers invading their territory. If you build an opera house, write about some nobles enjoying this latest gift from the government. If your scientists discover the alphabet, write about your people reacting to it. Don't limit the R Ping to just when you talk to other nations.
  • You only get one post per turn, and the turn ends when I make my next GM post.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions!

Right, let's get down to how the RP works! You are Tropeius, the leader of Tropenation. You have two cities on the coast of the continent. But how do you write down what you want your nation to do? How do you make a post? Well, before we get to that, we're gonna have to see how a GM post is made! Let's take a look.

]Year 1220 —> At the beginning of the GM post, there will be a world map showing the current borders and where each city is. This map will also display resources, city-states, what improvements there are on certain tiles, etc, and you will all be free to use it to help work out what your nation will do, but don't let it bog your posts down- don't fill them with "move soldier to tile 23", this isn't Battleship.

Nation of Tropenation

—> Right here will be your current gold, science, food and faith numbers, and how much of each you are making per turn.

  • Nation:
    • Technology: You finish your research on Tropes. You can now build Trope Buildings and Trope Units. You have also received a gold bonus. You can now research X (4 turns - gives you bla bla), Y (2 turns - gives you bla bla), F (8 turns - gives you bla bla).
    • Your borders grow.

  • City of Tropecus:
    • Production: The city has finished building the Trope House, and will now generate +2 production. Here will be the units and buildings you can now build.

  • City of Trapecus:
    • The city's borders have grown.
    • Currently building: Granary (1 turn left).

  • Units
    • Workers: Your workers have finished building two farms (+4 food) and two mines (+4 iron).
    • Your Soldier 1 unit attacks Tropeplace's cannons, dealing 12 damage and receiving 12 damage. (Current health: 12/24)
    • Your Soldier 2 unit was attacked by Tropething's aircraft. (Current health: 10/30)

Next Nation

—> And the thing goes on...

So that's a GM post. Seems very simple, right? I know. Trust me, it may look complicated, but you'll get the hang of it. There'll also be a permanent link to a list of technologies, buildings and units in the opening post. But now it's your turn to post. What are you going to do? Come with me.

Tropeius, leader of Tropenation, Year XXXX

Nation

—> Here is where you write down everything that happens in a Nationwide scale. For example, here you can write an offer you ake to Tropeland where you'll give them gold in Exchange for furs. Or here you can tell your scientists to research Radio technology. Let's see what Tropeius does.

Message to Tropeland: Your lands are mighty and beautiful. Big speech about how great you are. Let us form a defensive pact.

Technology: research F.

Cities

  • Tropecus: Start creating settlers.

Units

  • Workers: start building roads connecting Tropecus to Trapecus.
  • Soldier 1: fight back.
  • Soldier 2: retreat to Trapecus.

And that's how the game works. Again, this is all supposed to be mockup posts. You can always sprinkle bits and pieces of R Ping here and there, like, in the case of this example, write down the reaction to the nation discovering tropes!

Sheet

But now, let's get to the real meat of the game: your civilization. Let's get to the sheet?

  • Civilization Name: The name of your... well, you get the idea.
  • Origin: What game/show/anime/comic/whatever does it come from?
  • Description: What the name says. Describe your civilization, what it believes in, what it wants... you get the idea.
  • Leader:
    • Leader Name: The name of the civilization's leader.
    • Appearance: If he has one.
    • Personality: When it comes time to deal with other nations, how will he react?
    • Bonus: Every leader has a bonus- extra gold, extra units... make one that has something to do with your leader.
  • Unique Resources: Later in the game, your civilization will be able to farm unique resources it may use or trade. What are those and what do they do?
  • Unique Technologies: Every civilization in the game has some technologies only they can research. Tell me what are those, what do they do, what do they add to the game and when will your civilization be able to unlock them.
  • Unique Units: Same as the technologies, except this one is for units. Tell me how strong their attack and defense is, when can they be created, what resources they need...
  • Unique Buildings/Wonders: Same as before. You get the drill, right?
  • Objectives: What does your civilization want to do? You can have more than one objective.

Accepted Civilizations

Let's get to it!

  • Civilization Name: Mezeporta
    • Origin: Monster Hunter (technically just the name of the 'hub city' from the latest game, but since there aren't any overarching civilizations in the games proper, this is kind of a composite faction, based on the society of the games)

  • Description: A nation founded by an alliance of once-nomadic tribes, Mezeporta is a civilization on the border between mountains and desert, named for their first (and currently only) city. Mezeporta was founded in a tough land, filled with monsters and the ruins of bygone eras. Its people struggled for many centuries, but have risen above their simplistic beginnings to dominate the land around them. Agriculture has never been their strong suit, instead relying on a sort of hunter-gatherer lifestyle that paid off thanks to just how dangerous and bounteous their homeland is, and then trading for what they couldn't do themselves.
    • Their buildings have a look that could be described as 'part cave man', 'part ancient mesoamerican'. Most of their buildings, at least within their cities, are made of a variety of stones, then decorated with fine woods or monster bones, while smaller villages tend to be made out of whatever the villagers can find and build themselves.
    • Their culture is focused on self-sustainability, whereby most individuals are trained from youth to be able to care for all their own basic needs. This lack of specialization makes them strong in some ways, but has made development slow, and their dependence on the land leaves them with a heavy reliance on what they can immediately hunt, collect or fish by hand.
    • Due to the many dangerous creatures of their homeland, those who specialize in hunting them, called Hunters, are highly respected. This can be most clearly seen by the fact that Mezaporta's principle governing body is the 'Hunter's Guild', a group of the most skilled, experienced and well equipped Hunters.

  • Leader
    • Leader Name: Hantomasuta, Mistress of the Hunter's Guild
    • Appearance: Tall, thin, and graceful in spite of her well-built physique and the presence of a long, thin scar down the left side of her face. She generally dresses in flowing robes, a mixture of reds and browns accessorized by slivers of bone or teeth, and often wears durable but light-weight armour made from wyvern scales over the top, her dual swords sheathed at the hip. Her skin is a sandy brown, while her hair is pitch black, done up into a lengthy pony-tail. Some say she doesn't cut it, instead weaving it into a new knot with every battle. She'd argue how impractical, painful, and disease causing that could be and would promptly slap someone for such stupid rumours.
    • Personality: Wary of the unknown, Hantomasuta is often cold and aggressive to those she doesn't know - the sort of person who greets newcomers with a nod and a few choice words, rather than a hand shake or a banquet. However, earn her trust though careful words and frequent trade and coming to her aid during times of need, and one can find a long lasting ally. Or, indeed, a ferocious enemy.
    • Bonus: A Nation of Hunters - Receive two bonuses per Ruin scavenged. Cannot create new Settlers till the Medieval Era is reached.

  • Unique Resources
    • Felvine (luxury resource, boosts wealth + happiness)
    • Fine Steak (luxury resource, boosts food + happiness)
    • Union Ore (strategic resource, can be used in place of any other strategic resource except Horses)

  • Unique Technologies:
    • Quests: Unlocks the 'Quest Range' improvement, that can be built on top of Felvine, Fine Steak and Union Ore resources to gather them. Available during the Ancient Era.
    • Hunting Guilds: Allows units to be traded between allied civilizations and increases the bonus of all animal-based luxury resources. Available during the Medieval Era.

  • Unique Units
    • Hunter: Basic melee infantry unit of the Ancient Era, replaces the standard Warrior unit. 3 movement, +25% damage vs Barbarians and Mounted units.
      • Greatsword Hunter: Upgrades from the Hunter during the Classical Era, replaces the standard Swordsman and Longswordsman units. Health and attack increase, +25% defense when outside allied territory. Requires 1 Iron per unit.
      • Switch Axe: Upgrades from the Greatsword Hunter during the Renaissance Era, replaces the standard Musketman unit. Health and attack increase, +25% attack when outside allied territory. Requires 1 Iron per unit. Replaced by standard Rifleman.
    • Gunlance: Upgrades from the standard Pikeman during the Renaissance Era, replaces the standard Lancer (unlike the Lancer, which is a mounted unit, the Gunlance is infantry). Can attack at range (1 space) as well as melee, increased attack, +25% defense in friendly territory, +50% attack vs Mounted units. Replaced by standard Anti-tank Gun.

  • Unique Buildings/Wonders
    • Arena: Gives +2 happiness, +1 culture and +1 food in the city in which it is built. Replaces the Colosseum. One is needed in every city in order to construct the Circus Maximus wonder.

  • Objectives: Economic (make the most money) or Diplomatic (be everyone's favorite buddies) victory focus.

Asking for opinions and feedback on Mezeporta so far? Still got some more unique units to add descriptions and details for, and possibly some more unique buildings or technology, I'm unsure at the moment. Alternatively, is there too much? After all, in canon Civilization nations get one or two unique units, maybe a building or an improvement, and an ability.

Also, should I just create an OC leader, who would be an amalgamation? Or, uh... what? Or would it be more fitting if he's just called 'Mezeporta Elder' or something? XD

Maybe just 'The Guildmaster', since that fits with the whole 'governed by the hunter's guild'.

I'm also wondering what to do regarding tech development? I mean, Monster Hunter has some friggin' awesome beasties, I'm wondering if Mezeporta should gradually tame bigger and bigger beasts as the ages go by, resulting in their 'modern' tech becoming just 'dudes riding mountain sized dinosaurs'?

@ Bean: Because I want to play, but have no-one else to play as. And it's not going to be completely similar. I have ideas for Unique Units based on killstreaks or the general community (Camping Noob: Increased Range and Defense, heavily decreased mobility.).

They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver!

[up] Awesome.

[up][up] Still seems like kind of an uninteresting idea to me.

[up][up][up] I allowed everyone to put in as many unique things they want, but when it comes time to accepting sheets, I'll definitely cut it down to just a few unique units and just a few unique techs. So, put everything you want, and when it comes time, we'll start removing a thing or two. As for the leader, you can make an OC one, since your nation doesn't have a canon one. And the thing with the monsters sounds good, you can have an unique unit being the "Monster Hunter", and as you get more techs, you find more beasts.

Is there a decided limit, yet?

It'd be nice if we could make our civilizations a bit more unique than the ones in the games, especially since the games themselves often have between 20 and 40 civilizations (so obviously need to limit how unique each one is) where as it looks like there will be far fewer civilizations in the RP?

I'm thinking:

One unique ability of the nation itself.

Three to five unique units that replace standard units. When they get replaced by the standard units of later eras, their bonuses and/or special abilities still carry over to the replacing unit.

Two unique buildings or wonders that replace standard buildings. Due to the nature of the games, these aren't 'replaced' and cannot be destroyed once built (unless the city they were built in is burned down, I guess).

One or two unique technologies that either provide a unique improvement, or some form of bonus or other advantage separate from the 'regular technologies' (since the unique units, buildings and wonders would, I assume, be acquired just be researching the tech responsible for their equivalent 'standard' versions? Or something?).

Up to three unique resources that only they can collect. These can be either luxuries or strategic, and don't necessarily require unique tech to acquire, though they might do.

That's pretty much the bonuses I was going for- it's the same as the game's plus one.

Yes, that's the way Wonders work. If the city they're built in is razed down, they're pretty much gone.

As for the unique units, they usually either appear a while after you enter a certain Era (the Russians have a special naval unit that appears a while after you enter the Clasical Era) or after you research a specific technology (like how Nuclear Bombs only appear after you research Nuclear Theory).

I'm reconsidering doing the Dark Kingdom. I would do Barovia from Ravenloft, but that's probably out as it's ruled by a vampire (Strahd Von Zarovich) and has a lot of fantasy and horror-themed monster units.

I'll think of something though. Maybe the Third Street Saints from Saints Row, seeing as they became an NGO Superpower in the third game and controlled the US Government directly in the fourth game. The Boss would be their leader, of course. I even have some unique units and buildings for them as well.

  • Civilization Name: Third Street Saints
  • Origin: Saints Row
  • Description: The Saints are a proud warrior people, known for being raiders and bandits, believing in the ideas of might makes right and that he who has the most power and wealth wins. Their leaders are obsessed with acquiring wealth and power, but are willing to allow their subjects advance up the social ladder if they can prove themselves in battle or in thievery. Their government is sort of a meritocratic oligarchy, with The Boss and her closest compatriots at the top of the metaphorical food chain.
  • Leader:
    • Leader Name: The Boss
    • Appearance: The Boss is a tall, impressive Caucasian female. She is tall for a woman, and has jet black hair and violet eyes. She wears a lot of purple clothing and her arms and legs are decorated in purple tribal tattoos, as well as a full-back tattoo of the Fleur-De-Ils (the Saints insignia). As the game advances, The Boss will dress very stylishly, keeping the theme colors of silver and purple. (Since you can customize the appearance of The Boss, I will use this written description)
    • Personality: Although The Boss cares little for other civilizations, and honestly doesn't give a shit about collateral damage if it means wealth and power, The Boss is actually quite fair to those within The Saints, and is willing to give those in her civilization a chance at some form of status or wealth, so long as she remains on top with her homies, all of whom had to earn their place in the hierarchy. However, in the end, she is a very violent and greedy criminal who seeks wealth and power, and is generally Lawful Evil. But she prefers the term "puckish rogue".
    • Bonus: She gives the Saints extra gold, as The Boss and by extension The Saints, value material wealth and power over everything else.

  • Unique Resources: Zin Alien Crystals. The crystals can be used to empower the troops of the Third Street Saints, but aren't available until the Final Age.
  • Unique Technologies: The technologies may be a little silly, but remember, Saints Row is a comedic franchise and these are from the canonical games.
    • Dubstep Gun: Available in the Final Age, the Dubstep Gun technology can allow the Saints to weaponize music and give their troops sonic energy weapons that harm their enemies, but sounds like harmless music to the troops of the Saints. Due to its tremendous power, it is unavailable until the Final Age.
    • Super-Powers: These super-powers come from the Zin Alien Crystals, and cannot be used until the Final Age. The super-powers include enhanced speed, strength, and endurance, essentially doubling the attack and defense of the Saints troops.
  • Unique Units: Here are the unique units of the Saints...
    • Gang Banger: Available in the Medieval Age and every age past that, these street thugs have poor attack and poor defense, but are adept at raiding resources from enemies and zerg-rushing. Because they are little more than armed criminal civilians of the lower classes, they are cheap to make. They are a melee unit that carry knives and blades up until the Information Age, where they can access pistols with proper firearms research. Requires food.
    • Homie: These thugs are battle-hardened, and have gained audience with The Boss, becoming hitmen and shock troops for The Saints and owning some status in the Saints hierarchy, the Homies serve as bodyguards, hitmen, and shock troops often serving high-ranking officials in the Saints, up to and including The Boss. They have high attack and mediocre defense. The Homie unit is available in the Industrial Age up to the Final Age. Requires gold and food. The Homie is a ranged unit, carrying a shotgun or a high-caliber pistol.
    • STAG Trooper: Available in the Information Age and later, the troops of Special Tactic Anti-Gang or STAG are elite soldiers with military training and extensive resources. They used to be enemies of the Saints until the Saints absorbed their agency into the Saints' society. The STAG Trooper has decent attack and very high defense. Requires gold, food, and metal. They are a dual ranged and melee unit, carrying an assault rifle (which can be upgraded to an energy rifle once you research energy weapons in the Space Age) and a machete.
    • Daedalus Gunship: This spaceship is available in the Final Age, and can be used as an attacking vehicle and as transport. Very High Defense, Above Average Attack, and decent speed. Requires a massive amount of gold, metal, fuel, and some Zin Alien Crystals.
  • Unique Buildings/Wonders: These are the Wonders of the Saints....
    • Planet Saints: A store that sells Saints-brand clothing and other merchandise such as drugs, metals, and other rare goods. Can generate gold for the Saints. Available in the Renaissance Era and later.
    • The Boss's Crib: A palace of opulence and decadence and a testament to criminal greed and ruthlessness. First available in the Classical Age as a Roman palace, it becomes a castle in the Medieval Age and Renaissance Age, a Plantation-style Mansion in the Industrial and Modern Ages, an immense in the Atomic and Information Ages, and a purple crystal spire in the Space Age and Final Age. The Boss's Crib can inspire troops to fight better, providing a temporary boost to attack and defense to those within its vicinity.
  • Objectives: To gain wealth, power, and respect from other civilizations and eventually conquer them entirely. So, a mix of Economic and Military.

(I hope this is acceptable)

@Mezeporta: Accepted.

@desdendelle: All you need to know is that improvements are farms, mines, etc that you build on top of resources and that there are four different ways to win: Domination Victory (eliminate everyone), Science Victory (in the game it's build and launch a spaceship, here it's colonize a planet), Cultural Victory (your culture is so fucking awesome everyone bows down to it. Still working on this game's version of that, but it'll focus around Wonders- things like the Pyramids- and things like that), Diplomatic Victory (everyone loves you and they vote for you to win).

@Paulie: Accepted too.

I have a question, do we start out with a city or do we have to build one at the very beginning. If we start out with a city/settlement, then the capital of the Third Street Saints will be Steelport. If I can build a second city, then it will be Stilwater.

And how many workers or troops do we start out with? (I never played Civilization, so I'm confused)

@Geek: Based on my limited understanding of the Call of Duty franchise, it's probably best to do what I did and just take all of the interesting and unique aspects from the various sub-series and use those. As for their ability, maybe something focused around boosting the power of units at the cost of them taking longer to produce? Since the games are based around being a badass, world saving One-Hit Wonder.

@Paulie: Somehow you managed to make a civilization out of a criminal organization from a comedy game?! Looks awesome. Hantomasuta probably wont like them, though. Too much bling.

@Big Bean

We start off with the capital right at the start? Just thinking that in the games you start with a *settler*, and usually found your first City (AKA your Capital) in the first turn or two? Or will you just start us all off near useful resources?

Also, could you check over Mezeporta again? I edited the Gunlance and Arena a bit, made them a bit more powerful, so I need to check if that's okay? I wont edit anything else on it from now on, though, short of spelling mistakes. o_O;

Out of interest, how many civilizations are we gonna have before we start?

While people are working out their civilizations, can we post concepts for city-states? The basic five types are Cultured (gives culture when friendly/allied), Maritime (coastal only, gives food when friendly/allied), Militaristic (periodically gives you more units when friendly/allied), Religious (gives you Faith + a one-time bonus when friendly/allied) and Mercantile (provides unique luxury resources when friendly/allied).

Maybe we could add a sixth Scientific type, which gives you bonus Research points when friendly/allied?

Some ideas for city-states far would be:

Demacia, situated on a coastline. Militaristic, tends to be neutral to other civs and city-states. Increasing your influence with it will decrease your influence with its rival, Noxus.

Noxus, always situated inland. Militaristic, tends to be hostile to other civs and city-states. Increasing your influence with it will decrease your influence with its rival, Demacia.

Utopia. Religious, tends to be neutral to other civs and city-states. If allied with, it provides a unique unit in the form of the Maneuver Gear Infantry from the Medieval through to Modern Eras.
