I was browsing through some RWBY fics, and I found this review under one (pretty weak) OC fic:

...simply placing an OC within the midst of the canon storyline is rather risky. Most people can automatically consider it to be some sort of bad self-insert or Gary Stu/Mary Sue without hesitation, even if they've never read the fic. So if you're going to follow the canon path, a suggestion would be to make sure the story centers on the OCs and not just have them tagging along with the main characters like a Companion Cube. It's okay if there's interaction between OCs and canon characters, but make sure that the dialogue doesn't become a copy of the RWBY script with minor extra parts in it.

I'd say this is a pretty solid advice to those who want to make an OC. On the other hand, I'm not sure about OC-centric story. I think a good OC fic have OC that interact with the canon characters and setting in an organic way, and not sure if that's a good way of doing it.

Just few of the things that annoy me about a lot of OC fics:

- Shoddy introduction: If you have things like "This is my first story" or "I hope you enjoy" or such in the description.

- Overly short chapters: Come on, at least try to hit 2,000 words per chapter.

- Overpowered characters: Need I more explanation?

- Copy and Paste weapons/personality: Enough with brooding lady's man who either uses sword or gauntlet and wears longcoat. The kind of people who tend to write these kind of fic don't have a strong team either.

- Naming Convention Violation: If it was one of those fanfics that have been released before Monty posted that OC Naming Rule, maybe, but stories after that have no damn excuse.

- Dull Fighting Scenes: You are writing a fanfic on a work that is created by Monty Oum. WRITE like it.

Just to name a few.

Anybody know what kind of calendar system the world of Remnant use?

If I remember it right, they use the Monday-Sunday naming for the the days. But what of the months, are they using the same names we do? Or the year, are we to assume that it's 2013 or something like Gundam's Universal Century?

I know this might not be a big of a deal to some of you, but it wouldn't hurt to know, is it?

Actually, calender is a GREAT help in writing stories. I am actually curious about it myself.

Still, since we don't have any official date, just set a starting point and an excuse (maybe scholars just wanted to make chronicling more convenient and international). When the actual Universal Calender is revealed, just change the date.

Alrighty then :D

Say, do you think it would be too farfetched (I wonder if I use that word right) if the characters of RWBY could take on a Metal Gear? Or Revengeance!Raiden? Just curious.

Oh, I forgot something; is Remnant's time system like ours, 12 numbers on the clock with the 24 hours system, or something else?

Well...Adam did destroy that fairly large spider drone in one hit. So, I guess a whole team can defeat a MG if they are smart about it.

Yeah, probably like ours. It does have 7 days weeks like we do, so it's probably safe to assume that.

Usually Metal Gears are larger than that spider droid, but you're right XD

Oh, and thanks for listing those things you hate, Roy. Now I have an idea of what not to do when I got to make my Kamen Rider OOO x RWBY self-insert fanfic.

Yes, I know SI fics are plenty enough, but the idea struck me the instant I thought of it, and I'm deadset on making it. It'll set a month before the first episode, my SI-Self will meet Ozpin and Glynda first.

Well, my opinions are, well, just that: my opinions. But you're welcome, nonetheless.

Also, make sure that you have a very clear character identity. Keep asking yourself questions such as "What is his motivation?" "Why is he in Beacon?" "What does he expect to accomplish there?" "How are his interactions with his teammates?" those sort of things.

Ideas like that are helpful grin

Well, there's two thing ya should know:

One, I already have a clear character identity, I mean, it's ME for crying out loud. That's why it's called Self-Insert XD

And two, when I say self-insert, I meant that literally. That other me is from another timeline from this vast multiverse (I seriously believe in that XD), he's an earthling that's older (I'm 21) than me, and the powers that be made a wormhole of sorts (think Evil Dead 2/Army of Darkness wormhole) that transported him into the RWBY-verse.

This would be the part where I explain what Kamen Rider OOO is to ya, but there's a page for that here. Visually, I'm basing OOO on his Super Imaginative Chogokin action figures, for it looked more interesting to me, not to mention badass.

Anyways, I plan for my SI-Self to work under Ozpin as cover; would be difficult to explain that you're from another world/dimension/universe entirely, don't you think? As Kamen Rider OOO, he'll become Beacon Academy's security guy. Yes, in a school full of kickass kids, there's a security guy.

There will be baddies from Kamen Rider OOO, but I'm still thinking of a way of how my SI-Self's conflict against the bad guys from KR OOO wouldn't mess up RWBY's canon much (Let's face it, like in Mass Vexation or Sleeping with the Girls, a Self-Insert's presence is already screwing the canon, but I don't want to ruin this amazing new series that is RWBY)

On a rudely invasive note, I just started Borderlands 2, so I ended up finding the Spacebattles thread about a RWBY crossover with Borderlands.

Now I'm thinking about skill trees and rendering Team RWBY into the Borderlands universe without doing a "Ozpin brings a dangerous relic into school that mysteriously transports students into alternate universes because Ozpin's a dick" kind of plot.

More importantly, I couldn't help but agree that they wouldn't last on Pandora. Not as their usual selves anyway. They'd have to be something... more, something deadlier.

For those of you who are following, chapter 12 of Pyrrha(c) Victory is up.

Man, this fic is in pretty much top 5 in almost everything, follows, favorites, reviews...depending on how frequent Jaune Arc's Pain updates in the future, this might even end up being the most reviewed fanfic in the fandom eventually.

You know, I'm getting pretty darn tired of this whole "Jaune becomes an uber-badass" fics. I actually want to see a fic where Jaune shows far more competency as a field commander or Mission Control.

I just can't get enough of anything Jaune x Pyrha related. Is this how rooting for an OTP feels like? XD

oh Ren, with all the shenanigans that's happening in this fic (hell, I bet he has to deal with 'em all in many RWBY fanfic lol) you're the only one who's willing to clean up the mess [lol]

Say guys, who do ya think would won in a dance-off between Jaune and Ren? I mean, canonically, Jaune's damn good at dancing. But Ren is voiced by Monty Oum, and he's also a damn good dancer (so by proxy Ren has some of Monty's skill in my headcanon)

Would be hilarious/fun/awesome if in the end, the two danced like a pro, impressing the girls or something

Jaune X Pyrrha is probably one of the fastest OTP I've seen. Of course, this isn't to say that there aren't Jaune X Ruby supporters. tongue

I think there will be at least one character in the future who is a Dance Battler.

For me, finals and such would be ending in about a day or two. I think I will start writing my first OC fic. Probably will be up in three days or four.

Eh, not dance-y enough.

By the way, would it make sense for Schnee Dust Company to have a security department/subcontractor company that deals with White Fang threats?

The main character of my OC fic, currently named Grau Jaeger, used to be a part of the security contractors (read:private army), and have dealt with White Fang a lot, with at least several dozens WF kill counts.

Not only I also like Jaune x Ruby, but the idea of a Jaune harem is too damn fun/awesome not to think. Would be even better/funnier if Ren and Nora are part of it [lol]

I dunno if I've said this before, but everybody is virtually shippable with everyone in RWBY XD

Like them hiring a PMC or something? Being one of the big dogs in the economy of Remnant, I guess that makes sense

Something like that, yeah.

The catch (or twist?) is that he is actually a faunus himself (well, half-faunus - his mother was a dog faunus, which I guess make him a literal son of a bitch), and he cares about faunus rights.

That's the thing about his color motif - gray.

He cares about faunus rights, but works for a company that violates it.

He is a compassionate and caring person, but works as a mercenary who have killed a lot of people, good and bad.

Grau grew up as a hunter in a very cold and harsh forest. He followed his father in his hunting ever since he was 5 (apparently there are some hunting tribes in current day Siberia that actually do that). After certain turn of his life, he ended up joining SDC's PMC at 13, as a sniper. By the time the story began, he has a kill count of somewhere around 80~90. This over a decade long training gave him several skills:

  1. Marksmanship - He has excellent eye to hand coordination. He can make some really impossible shots as well, such as shooting through walls (with right kind of rifle), shooting a gun off of the shooter's hand, and Scope Snipe. The longest shot he ever made was somewhere around 1,200 yards.

  2. Keen senses - This is his greatest asset, that helped him survive all the dangers he faced and made him a deadly soldier. Outside his marksmanship, due to him being a half dog faunus, he has a really good sense. His eyesight, smell, hearing, they are all beyond average faunus, let alone a human being. Initially his senses were at the level of a normal faunus, but years of training as a hunter and a sniper helped him develop much further.

  3. Endurance: - Another thing he developed as a hunter. Provided he has enough water, he can go days without any sleep to hunt down his prey. And yes, his keen senses help.

  4. Reflex: - A skill developed while working as a PMC. With so many dangers being thrown at your face, you either learn to solve your situation fast, or you die.

His weapon is Trauer Hunden, a designated marksman rifle that can also be split in two machetes. He is not too great with hand to hand combat, at least compared to the canon characters (Yang would curb stomp him, to start with).

His combat style basically boils down to wearing down: make as much cut as possible, dodge all the attacks as your enemy slowly gets exhausted due to blood loss. His high endurance helps.

tl:dr - He avoids close quarter fights, and when he does, he just does whatever it takes.

I fear that I'm giving a bit too many sets of skills, possibly turning him into a Gary Stu or something. Also, by the story begins, he is 20. Do you suppose that's a bit too old to enter Beacon?

By the name, for those of you who don't know (which I don't think is many), Jaeger means hunter in German. He's somewhat based on The Huntsman, appearing in Snow White and some versions of Little Red Riding Hood. As such, he becomes quite close to Weiss and Ruby.

He is a bit cautious around Yang and Blake. The former because he once got beaten to death by her (thanksfully, she doesn't recognize him because he was wearing a mask back then), and the latter because she is a White Fang operative (he doesn't learn that she left it until later).

One of his partner was Jaune's relative, so he's a bit close to him as well. Also, he is a fan of Pyrrha.

Yeah, I might want to be a bit careful, because otherwise he could possibly be a Gary Stu here. By the way, he's not overpowered, if nothing else. In fact, he's a bit of Weak, but Skilled.

I mean, sure, he have been a soldier for many years, but he only has been one in a traditional sense, not in a Impossibly Cool Weapons Wielding Hunter sense.

@D Roy I doubt they'd have a security team solely for the White Fang, but the security team they do have would naturally encounter the White Fang on a regular basis, so your idea would work.

As for Jaunex Pyrrha, I heard a fairly good argument why it wouldn't work (and I'm paraphrasing)

"Look, as much as Pyrrha is clearly crushing on Jaune, the fact remains that Jaune has never shown any signs that he returns her affections or sees her as anything other than a friend. And I know people will say: 'Oh, that's just because he's Oblivious to Love!' but what do you really think will happen? That Jaune will go 'Oh! I now realise Pyrrha has a crush on me and thus have suddenly fallen in love with her, despite having no previous romantic feelings towards her'? Sorry, but it just doesn't work like that."

Harsh, but he does have a point

Now I'd like to see if anyone here has a valid counterpointgrin
