Can we not bring accusations of logical fallacies into this please?
Honestly, I find it entirely plausible that a lot of people would not recognize this trope by its official name. We can decide on that on the multiple proposition crowner, can't we? I think we've basically said everything we need to about that at this point.
I'm still not sure how the crowner would be structured.
The options proposed so far that I'm aware of:
- Rename (not mutually exclusive with the others)
- Cut
- Redefine to focus on characterization
- Leave as is
Could work...
We need to be specific as to what we're redefining this as.

I think the proposed definition is that it indicates sexuality, but in a subtle and generally wholesome fashion.
^ Can we also please refrain from comparing this to other tropes? Whether the name performs well is entirely unrelated to how well a completely different trope is performing. I mean, we've kind of been wandering all over with this thread.
No Real Life Examples has its own little thread... somewhere. I think fanservice tropes are often excluded from having such examples, aren't they?

I thought that was already covered?
The fact that Yandere is a horrible, horrible name is completely irrelevant to this name. And familiarity isn't actually how a name is judged anyway - if there's a single metric, I'd say it's how intuitive the name is to someone who's not familiar with it.
This is the thread for No Real Life Examples Please.

I've made a page action crowner here but before it is attached I want to make sure we agree on the options presented.
Sweater Girl added by me to the No Real Life Examples Please thread linked above.
I would change "presenting" to "characterizing" on that second option there.
I think the arguments in favor of cutting have been less "the misuse is too widespread" and more "we don't need another fanservice trope".
Otherwise it looks fine.

I voted up renaming and redefining. Note that redefining currently says we'll redefine it so it's not a fanservice trope.
Thumbed up the redefine option.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI hope the people voting for a redefine are voting rename because that definition will definitely not work with Sweater Girl.
Well, if "Sweater Girl" means something other than what we are talking about here and people are using this for "woman + sweater", then we can't keep the current name. Thumbed that one up as well.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'm just going to say now that this will be back in TRS if we keep the current name (disregarding the vagaries of the thread cap system). I will literally bet money on it.
I can kinda see that. There is a contingent of tropers who just don't do fine distinctions. We should be able to zap mis-listed examples fairly easily, but if there is a solution that requires less maintenance, it'd be great.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyI voted rename up as well, though as an apparently preexisting term I would just add a clarifying word or two and keep the 'sweater girl' part as well. Of course, I think that's basically standard procedure.

It's a pre-existing term, but it's not a pre-existing term for "characterizing the attractiveness/sexuality of the character in a reserved or wholesome manner."
Arguable, but tell me, what kind of name would we even use that doesn't basically use those words anyway?
You mean the words "sweater" and "girl" or the words "attractive" and "wholesome"? The clearer and more narrow the name, the better.
'Sweater' and 'girl.' Because you're pretty much going to have to use some variation on that when it's about a girl wearing a sweater. It may not be enough by itself, but it's going to have to be there in some form.
I'm honestly not sure what you're arguing with me about.
