It is the worst at queer identity politics. The absolute worst.
That's probably a rant for another thread, though. Suffice to say that it contains the following line without a hint of irony. From the protagonist.
Alrighty, then moving on
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."I had a friend in high school who was obsessed with Next To Normal and Spring Awakening.
Fun fact: The '80s Annie movie was mostly filmed at my university, in the main building in the middle of campus. You gotta walk up that big staircase in order to get to most of the English classes on campus.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.(x4)Doesn't the play avert that with Lucas, since he takes opposite sides in each timeline? (Note: I haven't seen the play, just read the trope page.)

He does, but none of the characters are aware of this and thus treat him like shit over it in both timelines.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Oh yeah. And if you go on a tour of the university, that's the thing they'll emphasize the most.
Also, there is a VHS of Annie in my school's store that I'm pretty sure has been sitting there unpurchased since the '90s.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.I just noticed that the credits attribute Little Orphan Annie not to Harold Grey, but to Tribune Media Services. Someone making this movie really hated Harold Gray, and it's hilarious.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Harold Gray would have been pissed off by the original film for showing FDR any sympathy at all. (He would still be happy they kept Warbucks conservative, though.)
I still think it's just downright wrong to disrespect the creator of the original comic, though.
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Creating a good comic does not absolve him of bring awful.
Also, apparently Warbucks was conservative in the original musical, and the movie fixed that.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Warbucks was still a Republican in the original film.
Gray's politics were all over the comic, anyhow. Note that he famously only let bad guys sing "Happy Days Are Here Again."

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Liberal, sorry. Liberal in the original musical.
Annie is a great comic despite Gray's politics, not because of them.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Aside from everything else about this film I've heard that pretty well insures it'll be bad, the fact they insulted the creator is the icing on the cake.
If it weren't for him they would never have gotten to make the film.
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."LUCAS!!!!... darling.
See, I find that just endears me to it.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. It's entirely possible to respect someone's work without also respecting them. If someone makes something great, but is also a giant shithead, I have no issue enjoying the thing they made while also hating their guts and pointing out what a horrible person they are. Nor do I think that's hypocritical.

"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am.""Your Fave is Problematic" would tell you differently
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.I mean...eh? Harold Gray put plenty of his politics in the strip, so it's not just the fact of his being the creator that makes it problematic.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. It's a hard knock aut-o-tune, it's a hard knock aut-o-tune, it's a shame when no... one... can... sing without di-gi-tal... processing.
So besides the 18% on RT or something like that, apparently they made a Hurricane Sandy joke. That alone pretty much killed the chances of me ever seeing this.

Looking for some stories?I predicted it'd suck, he-he-he... and the critics agree...
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."What do you mean?
Annie names Sandy as such because Sandy chases her tail real fast and Bill Stacks says she's "like a hurricane".
Probably the worst joke in the film. Most of them are far better.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
That's fair. I haven't seen If/Then, and all I know of it is that it has Idina Menzel and Anthony Rapp, which I don't think you could fuck up, but I usually agree with your taste in media, so I'll take your word for it.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."
