Needs Help: Impossible Thief

I didn't get it the first time, but it's only when I think about it that I can see it demonstrates.

The pic on Percussive Pickpocket demonstrates both this and that trope, and it WOULD be nice if it's on this page, but I'd understand you wouldn't just want to move that image here, since it demonstrates it there as well.

Therefore, the first 3 panels of this would have to do.

I think stealing a girl's underwear from underneath plate armor is more impressive than stealing glasses from somebody's head, hence I prefer the current pic.

Aye. Keep Until Better Image Suggested, and the suggestion doesn't cut it.

I thought it looked like a piece of jewelry.

Therefore, the artstyle isn't helping in this case.

Definite Keep Until Better Image Suggested, but I'm not enamored with it. Still better than the suggestion.

If there's a color version of the current, that would be better; otherwise I'm good to keep it on the page.

Would it be possible for someone to actually edit the image to include color?

Because color would make the panties stand out better instead of looking like jewelry to those who don't look closely.

The current image looks like the Foglios' work. For some reason I think they're good for this sort of trope. Unfortunately the best example I can think of from Girl Genius (panels 5,7 and 8 here) is already an image for some other trope I can't remember the name of.

As good a reason as any to reexamine parts of GG and Buck Godot at least.

Someone could do that, I'm sure, but will they if it comes to that? That's the question.

I am not in favor of making large changes (such as coloring a b/w piece) to an artist's work without their permission.

Played around a little with the image and added a Splash of Color. It's slightly clearer, and funnier (Pink Panties!). "Meh" on using it...

Pending someone doing a full coloring, that's enough of an improvement to make a swap.

It's unlikely that there will ever be a full color job from Phil. That looks like one of the really old illustrations he did for Dragon Magazine, 30 years or so ago. That said, I like the pink panties — the little bit of color does make the picture clearer. I vote for a swap.

Me too. I think I prefer just having the panties colored to hypothetically having the whole thing colored, really.

Alright, one or two more votes for the updated pic and we can run with it.

I vote for the original. I don't think we should be altering other people's work like that, and at any rate it looks odd to have one area colored and the rest black and white.

We alter people's work all the time in here; I completely fail to see the logic in this.

Yeah, I think that version is fine as well. The only times I really object to editing things is when the image is completely changed; like if we rewrote the speech bubbles completely or something.

"All the time" is a pretty big overstatement, unless you count resizing and cropping (which I don't). That said, it's not the first time I've disagreed with a suggestion to modify third-party art.

Well, we cut up, reorder (panels, bubbles, and content), flip, tweak colour values, translate, and stuff. I don't think colouring an area is out of what we often do.

I vote for the pink one.

As the person who launched this trope, I think the spot colour is perfect. As with most tropes, this has had a few images attached to it which sorta illustrate what it's about, but this one really focusses your attention on the only thing that matters in the scene. Nothing before it has done that.
