Nothing about this image implies "Don't." As far as I'm concerned, it's just a cabin in a beautiful wooded area. A great place to go camping. Nothing ominous or dark. That said, it's a poor image. There are a million better things that can be used for this. There are a lot better creepy images out there.

Yeah, that's awful. The cabin looks... at worst, a bit run down. But even that's a stretch.

It being bright, sunny, beautiful and green horribly subverts the intended meaning.

That's a definite yank from me.

I wonder if something from here would work - namely, the first image.

2.2 and 2.3 don't strike me as scary or ominous.

Fangorn? (Large image.)

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

I like 2.1 a great deal. It does not look like woods I'd want to walk in.

7.1: I feel like if we resized it, the action wouldn't be clear, but if we cropped it, it would no longer be a woods.

The latter two pics in 2 look like the woods around our house in southern Switzerland pretty exactly, and despite extensive wandering both by me and other people we've never encountered anything dangerous. Giving it a [tdown].

As for 2.1, it makes me think of RL woods I've been in a little too much to get the trope across for me.

7 works just as well if resized. I usually just zoom out with the browser to see how well an image resizes, and that gives a pretty good view of what it looks like. Less accurate with text, since the zoom might not use a very good downsizing algorithm, but if it's clear with that, it's easy to downsize it properly.

4 also works.

The rest, less so. The first two in 2 look rather inviting to me. The third just looks abandoned and sad. The one in 3 is just bad.

We should probably make an Image Links page for this. Also, I've fixed the tag.

7, I see just something getting eaten. Looks more like Wolf Pack to me. 4, in my mind, the lack of photorealism weakens the pic to me, compared to the OP proposals.

Well, if we're going for dangerous woods, how about this one? Note that needing to look carefully at the pic before you spot the danger is in my opinion part of what makes it a good example.

Yeah, I support that. The trope after all is not about "creepy forest", it's about a dangerous forest - hence my proposal in 3.

Possible alternative caption: Besides the three wolves and four elves (two carrying obvious weapons), there are another 5½ pairs of eyes looking at you. How many can you see?

In case anyone is interested, here are links to the graphic novel this came from. The image is the bottom panel of page 2. The story is only 16 pages long, but packs quite an emotional wallop into those pages.

I'm uploading it again to see if it views on mobile.

I can see this on my phone, but not 13.

[up] I believe so, yes. One or two more votes for 13 and we can run with it.
