The Conjuring

So, the movie is not nearly as scary as the marketing makes it out to be, but it does have some excellent jump scares and a few more that are wonderfully set up such as the ghost arms emerging out of nowhere to "play Hide and Clap". Oddly enough, this is one of the few horror films that hews pretty closely to the real life accounts of the hauntings; although the Warrens have fairly dubious credibility, this movie does largely reproduce the accounts of those involved as to what they believed happened. In the end, I think what made this movie really work for me was a combination of a very old-school style with no shaky cam and more implied than shown and the way that they ended it definitively, no Or Is It stinger.

At least that family appears to live in a time before clap activated technology.

[up] Heh.

I was unable to find the clapping scary or creepy or...anything. Maybe the first time. But the second time, it was ridiculous(especially with that corny voiceover).

I didn't dislike the movie but I'm not sure why people are gushing over it, either. It just didn't have the entertainment value of Insidious to me(save the prologue). I still might buy it. I'd just call it very competent.

I want to see that on the cover of a movie sometime: "VERY COMPETENT!"

One of the officers in my battery today was talking about this movie, said it was pretty crazy. I might need to see it.

It's well-acted, certainly. Vera Farmiga always has a really interesting way of moving? It's hard to describe, but it's fascinating to just watch her react to things. And strange to watch her play a nice person after the psycho Norma Bates. Patrick Wilson is delicious and underrated.

Oh, here's how I thought the movie was going to end: The paranormal couple gets home, only to find their artifacts room trashed and Annabel's case smashed open, and the daughter sweetly calling for Mom and Dad.

The prologue was the creepiest part; goddammit I hate dolls. It got pretty silly once the spirit started showing itself more. Thing that took me a little by surprise: no sudden downer ending like Insidious or most horror movies. The youngest daughter looked really creepy when returning the locket...I thought she was going to be possessed, but alas, just a crappy actress.

Oh, and the film had the trailer to Insidious II. Erm... Wasn't possessed!Patrick Wilson about to throttle his wife? If he didn't, why the fuck did she stay there after she saw a ghost possessing him?!

[up] Wouldn't be much of a true story.

Regarding Insidious Chapter 2, the opening scene is out, and it indicates that Patrick Wilson's character was only possessed temporarily, or the ghost possessing him played dumb.

I saw this last night drunk as shit, so it wasn't scary. I was laughing a good bit of the time, mostly from snarky remarks I was making.

I think my favorite was "shoulda stayed at Initech, Peter!"

Saw it yesterday. Can't really say if it's on par with Insidious or Sinister scare-wise, but I'd put the three together as the scariest recent films to come out.

Heh, it's funny, my Catchphrase for horror movies is always to ask my friends "Why didn't they grab a gun?!" when the characters are wandering around after hearing a noise. After about three instances of that in this movie, when the guy took out the shotgun to blow down the door, I leaned over and ecstatically whispered "I like this guy!" to my friend.

I thought near the end light was gonna be shed on whatever that possessed guy showed Lorraine and it would lead to a major Downer Ending. I suppose that's a job for (hopefully non-sucky) sequels.

Anybody else notice the Annabelle dolls' eyes went all Bathsheba after it terrorized the Warren girl?

Unlike my coworkers, I was never interested in this movie, but working at the movie theater during its release taught me that about half the locals don't know how to pronounce the word "conjuring". cool

I have to applaud the soundtrack. That opening track was dread incarnate.

The droning strings over the logo were worth the price of admission.
