I could not find a neutral thread on this show.

Ah, yes. That modern classic cartoon, Adored by the Network extreme with good reason. Some think it's not as good nowadays, but it's still as popular.

This is one of my favorite shows, mostly the older episodes, but I do like a number of modern ones, like that "Chum is fum" episode and the ones that throw Squidward a bone.

In my mind, the show started in 1999, and ended on the movie. Hell, if they wanted to make more, the should have had Hillenburg stay Executive producer, have C.H. Greenblat be in charge of newer animation, and make the new series focus on someone other than Sponge Bob, like Stanley.

I only occasionally watch newer SpongeBob. Then again, that's partly because I refuse to give those a chance.

I loved the old pre-movie episodes, though the post movies ones have a few decent episodes. I definitely are pretty dang awful.

My respect and admiration for Spongebob begins and ends indefinitely and without question at Seasons 1 to 3 (even though back then, some episodes pissed me in that period of time, as well - something I'm sure we all overlooked, unless we haven't.)!

It's alright, but sadly overrated and bloated beyond belief, IMHO (I also have it to blame for a lot of shows with actual potential to be great and long-lasting getting shafted because of it (And FOP, which is worse, IMHO!), with bad episodes that keep it from being as memorable in a truly positive light as it could be (unless you're only looking at the first three seasons... and yes, some of the legitimately decent holdouts after that that are too few and far between...).

The only post-movie episodes that really stick out in my mind as being actually good are probably "Fear of a Krabby Patty" (if only for the line about seeing a "professional") and "Sing a Song of Patrick" (the closest the show's come to the pre-movie style of comedy, in my opinion). I really enjoyed both of those.

As an avid hater of almost all of the post-movie episodes, I find it strange that Krusty Towers is one of my favorite episodes.

What about the one where they go to Atlantis and pop the Oldest Living Bubble?

While I like most pre-movie episodes, I don't really care for that "lost" episode all that much.

EDIT: I am also not fond of the BC episode. "Before comedy" indeed.

Pre movie Spongebob did have some duds. I do in fact remember having a rather polarizing feel about the first season. I think it's just the good/bad ratio was better at that point. Similarly there are some good post movie episodes, just less so ("Ear Worm" is one of my favorites).

Atlantis is definitely one of the worst sponge bob specials, the others are generally OK, though I did like the one about sponge bob's cowboy ancestor, one of my favorite post movie season episodes.

The only specials I've found tollerable were the halloween, Christmas, BC, and house party episodes.

yeah the pre movies specials and BC are good.

I haven't seen most of the more recent stuff, but my little brother has DVDs of the earlier episodes. If I had to choose a favorite, I think it would be "Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy III."

Band Geeks is best episode ever, IMHO - and not just because Squidward actually was AWESOME in it, either (and even when the show is actually GOOD, I fucking hate Squidward's face, too!).

Yeah. It's considered the Magnum Opus of SpongeBob.

In the early days, Sponge Bob was more like Tommy Pickles. A very optimistic, intelligent, naive everyman that tried to do the right thing and I think if anything, the Tommy-esque Sponge Bob helped make the show a success as many people could relate to his character.

Almost every character that isn't Squidward has changed completely.

Infodump on the upcoming theatrical movie sequel to the first Spongebob movie (yes, it exists).

Official movie title is "SpongeBob SquarePants 2". Kinda odd, considering the original title was a lot closer to it's predecessor ("The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 2"); people could end up confusing it as a movie sequel to the TV series, but eh.

Was initially planned to be released at the end of this year, but it was moved to a February 13th, 2015 release date.

Paul Tibbitt (executive producer and current showrunner of the series) is directing and creator Stephen Hillenburg is executive producer. Tibbitt confirmed he and Hillenburg wrote the story. Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger are writing the screenplay. Mary Parent is producer.

Tibbitt confirmed it will be mostly 2D animation, with the film being a mix of animation and live action like the first film. The original voice cast for the main six characters (SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy, and Plankton) for the show has also been confirmed to return. Antonio Banderas as also been cast as a pirate (animated or live-action, I don't know).

Nick is banking on the film to further boost SpongeBob's popularity around the world, and they are expecting the film to do even better than the first film did in overseas gross (which given the series's massive exposure and Nick's global influence, is not an unreasonable expectation). The film's budget is unknown right now-one report says Paramount is limiting the budget for the sequel to the same budget of it's predecessor ($30 mil.), another say the film will, among other films Paramount Animation is working on (see more about that below), will be $100 million (each).

Paramount is also using the SpongeBob SquarePants movie as the film debut of their newly-formed film animation division (and successor to Paramount Cartoon Studios/Famous Studios), Paramount Animation, who will be co-producing the film with Nickelodeon Movies. Aside from SpongeBob, Paramount Animation will also be developing film adaptations from Nick's other IPs, a few that been listed are Dora the Explorer, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and Nick's MMO Monkey Quest.

It seems like an attempt to revive the show's popularity as the show is declining in popularity (Although doing better than the other shows on the network) and has been since 2012. I don't think I have seen as much people talk about or praise the show since the 2000s (With the exception of the first run episodes).

Anyway, Stephen Hillenburg is a great writer and his record of episodes he wrote for Rocko'sModernLife were amazing and he wrote a few episodes for the first season of Sponge Bob and ran the original 3 seasons, alongside creating the show. But with the first 3 seasons, another creative force (who doesn't get as much credit) was Derek Drymon (Who now works on Adventure Time? Someone clarify if he left after Season 1). He was the head writer of the show and gave creative input alongside Hillenburg as to how episodes would play out. Derek left after the show's movie and hasn't participated in post cancellation episodes, where Stephen is still (partly) involved with the show, but he's not the showrunner or writer anymore. I think if they want to revive the show's popularity, they would have to bring in Derek Drymon as well.

It might be good though. Rugrats (But I don't think that the later episodes were bad) was getting alot of internet hate for it's later episodes when it was airing, but the movies were still praised mostly.

Hillenburg is the executive producer? And he also helped write the story? Yup, I'm seeing this.
