I am fond of Sealed Evil in a Duel to defeat big mean creatures, I like the poetry of it: The evil-hunting hero will now spend eternity exactly where he belongs: fighting evil.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Be Careful What You For
Why is this trope so prevalent? Why is 'wrong' to get your wish? And why does the being who grants the wish pervert it? Here are some threads on the subject.
"Analay, an original fan character from a 2006 non canon comic. Do not steal!"I suppose the reason wishes are always subverted are because of the classic aesop that we need to work for what we have, not just "wish it so", so "everything that comes easy, goes easy" (or in this case, "fucks things up even worse"). Also used to mean that sometimes we should just be happy with what we have instead of always wanting more.
But I find it annoying as well.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."I don't like a Pinball Protagonist. All they do is react to everything the Big Bad does or do whatever the Big Good tells them to do. Rather than taking part in driving the plot, they let themselves be affected by the plot.
Almost all of my protagonists are pinballs. Probably because if I had the real movers of plot in a POV role, it'd be very boring.
Could not disagree more. Plot-movers in a POV role make things way more interesting. Are you familiar with the Young Conqueror trope?
Sometimes you have to get to the other side of the board before you can be a player.
Still, you should make sure there's a good reason if the viewpoint character doesn't make any major decisions.
You say I am loved, when I don’t feel a thing. You say I am strong, when I think I am weak. You say I am held, when I am falling short.
Durrr. Missing such simple but effective methods. If more writers were more not like me.
