They could be serious. Unless there's a track record of disliking Glee or whatever, Smasher's comment can be taken either way.

They'll probably kill the character off. It's unlikely they'll have him just randomly be absent for no apparent reason, and they're not going to go for The Other Darrin-type situation, because then that comes off as disrespectful.
