No arguments from me.

I feel like I can't quite put them in the genius category because they only have a couple albums I consider great all the way through (Angel Dust and The Real Thing)... But on the other hand they've never made a bad album either.

I've actually been listening to those somewhat divisive first couple of albums lately. On the one hand, they definitely needed to ditch Chuck Mosley in favor of a more versatile vocalist if they were going to progress much musically. On the other hand, I kinda like how he gave their earlier stuff a bit of a more "punk" (or Post-Punk) flavor, and I'm going to say that musically Introduce Yourself is at very least almost as good as The Real Thing.

Oh, it's also kind of interesting to me that the first couple Faith No More songs I heard were "Epic" and "Digging The Grave", and it did not register to me that they would turn out to be by the same band. Actually, I'm a little embarrassed that the first time I heard "Epic" I thought it was an old Red Hot Chili Peppers song.

Side note on the early stuff: "New Improved Song", which has the same backing music as "The Morning After", is sort of an interesting glimpse into What Could Have Been if they wrote The Real Thing with Mosley instead of Mike Patton.

Probably my favorite band right now.

Theory: RV and Take This Bottle are about the same character.

Always found this band annoying, no offence. They're predecessors of the whole "look how quirky and unique we are!" movement in metal which hasn't resulted in much beyond bands who can be best summed up as "check-list of stuff we like to show we like things outside of metal because we are open-minded and you know, eclectic."

Absolutely phenomenal band, Angel Dust is for sure one of the better albums out there. King For A Day is obviously awesome as well, and I always found Album Of The Year pretty underrated. Not as big a fan of the pre-AD material.

Because I choose to.

It took me a little while to warm up to The Real Thing, but now I like it easily as much as Angel Dust.

I like King For A Day but not as many tracks stuck with me like the preceding two albums.

The title track is one of my all time favorites, though.

Everything they did from Introduce Yourself to Album of the Year is awesome, though The Real Thing and Angel Dust are my favorites... :D It's a real shame the general public mostly only knows 'em for "Epic" and (maybe) "We Care A Lot". Pretty sure "Epic" was the only real Pop chart hit they had. I guess that'd make 'em a One-Hit Wonder. :P

Todd In The Shadows should do "Epic" at some point. Also, incidentally, these guys are one of my favorite bands... :)

[up]I heard Todd say he probably wouldn't do "Epic" because it's hard for him to look at Faith No More as a One Hit Wonder.

[up] Makes sense. They might have had only one hit on the Pop chart, but I suppose they weren't really aiming for that kinda success anyways. Plus, most of their albums are gold or platinum, and they did have a few hits on the Modern Rock chart, seems to me... tongue Still, it'd be interesting to hear his take on 'em...

@ Stillbirth: Nothing wrong with being eclectic, quirky or open-minded. Depends how it's done, for me. I dunno, I don't regard any genre (or even the concept of genre itself, for that matter) to be any kinda Sacred Cow or anything- really, it's all good if done well, to me. The done well part, that's a matter of debate. Really comes down to personal taste...

I don't either but most attempts at it in my experience turn into a merry-go-round of stylistic ADD with little in the way of any coherent narrative to wrap up all to disparate elements.

Well, yeah, there is a lot of that. You're right about that. Not every band can be as eclectic as, say, The Beatles and actually pull it off. That said, FNM actually stuck to Funk Metal more consistently than is usually admitted. tongue Yeah, they did some other stuff too, but I'd say Funk Metal is two-thirds of their output, so whether or not one likes them kinda hinges on how ya feel about Funk Metal and Alternative Metal. If you don't like those genres, then it's completely understandable that you wouldn't like FNM...

And while I personally like those genres (when done well), I can sorta understand why many other people wouldn't care for them.

I picked up Angel Dust yesterday, great album! "Land Of Sunshine", "Smaller And Smaller" and "Be Aggressive" are my favorites at the moment.

[up] I'm taking the fact that "Motherfucker" is the lead single means that they're not even trying for any radio airplay. I mean I can't imagine a radio edit of that song being remotely listenable. Then again, it seems like this is strictly a Record Store Day thing anyway. And a JG Thirlwell-ized remix of that song does sound intriguing.

The song has no chance at radio, and they're probably better off that way. Billy Gould was saying in that interview how much more relaxed this recording process is ("Wow, it's our clock; we're doing it on our own time. There is no budget, there is no timeframe — it just has to be good.")

Anyway, I noticed this bit of news was trending on Facebook for a few hours. I didn't think they were that big.

Who needs radio anyways?... tongue

I'm looking forward to this- it'll most likely be awesome, if what's already been heard of it is any kinda indication. grin Can't wait 'til next spring.

Funny thing is, I remember hearing a few months back that the new record wasn't happening. This is VERY encouraging news! smile

Another track, “Cone of Shame,” is “blues-based rock and roll,” according to the bassist, with some “influences from Link Wray, Cramps, and a little black metal.” But Gould’s favorite song is still “Matador.” “Parts of it remind me of the first Siouxsie and the Banshees album,” he says. “We used real pianos and that brings this organic quality to it to the music.” Like most everything Faith No More have done, the new album–which is due for release in April 2015–will follow the group’s own singular vision, regardless of what fans and critics may want or not want it to be. “It’ll be much different than everything else out there—but that’s sort of the point,” Gould says. “It’s a combination of what we don’t hear in the outside world and what we feel is lacking from other bands. And in the end, it will sound like Faith No More.”

This is exciting.

[up][up] (Slightly) [lol] at Rolling Stone's headline choice: If you didn't know the song title beforehand, and didn't gather that quotation marks don't work in html, the URL would read more like "Hear Faith No More's first release in 17 years, motherfucker". As for the actual song, I do enjoy it. It seems to be getting mixed reactions on the FNM Facebook group I follow, but it's admittedly a hell of a weird choice for a first single.
