Why everyone insists on calling every ounce of exposed skin "fanservice" I'll never know.

It's not fanservice. They're just naked.

[up]So those close-up of Ryuko's butt and Satsuki's boobs are just there on accident?

Some of it is fanservice, but really after the halfway point or so it's just how they're dressed for the most part.

I don't know what to say to someone who thinks those outfits aren't supposed to be fetishy as hell.

[up][up]Point is, quite a lot of people aren't just gonna see a bunch of women in skimpy outfits (or less) and just put up with it.

It's fetishy, but it's sustained fetishy. By episode 5 or so Ryuuko isn't dressed like that because it's fanservice. The fanservice is an incidental side effect of her wearing the outfit due to continuity.

It's another case of viewing and interpreting only what is explicitly shown, which is fine. Some people think in black and white, but it is not a mentality one should have in some cases.

Looking to upgrade to park bench.

Your Mileage May Vary is a thing. I enjoy the show but I had seen some fanservicey shows in my lifetime so I am not as offended as much as I am shocked. I still wouldn't recommend this to everyone though as not everyonehas the same kind of tolerance for these things. My problem with the show is the pacing as it takes awhile to get used to and I didn't get it the first time until I rewatch the episode to get it.

[up][up][up][up] If they got into the show all the way and still haven't put up with it...

I don't know what to say then. The show wasn't going to stop, so they shouldn't expect it to.

Well, if you hate fansevice that much, I'm not sure why your watching anime in the first place. I never really viewed it as such. Kinda like the way american cartoons not wearing shirts and no-pants doesn't count as fanservice. YMMV however.

As a (somewhat) newer fan myself....you don't need THAT much experience to appreciate it. Anyway, the stuff I didn't get never seemed to be a big problem at least.

The only time I really felt like Ryuuko's ass was being shoved in my face was when she was being dick-whipped by Gamagoori. *smack* and *smack* it went! It was both jarring and glorious.

The kicker is that, while it is true there's a lot of fanservice in the show, none of it comes at the expense of the female characters being rendered helpless for the sake of it.

I sure said that!

More the opposite: fanservice empowers them and gives them inhuman levels of agency.

@The handle

Ironically, that seems a lot female empowering than most shows can claim. however the show does kind of get anvilicious with that lesson.

I may be wrong here, but it seems like the girls on fan-service anime are completely oblivious to the fact they are just props used to turn guys on. Here, EVERYONE is aware of how skimpy the clothes are and react to it.

True, that; usually in Anime either the girs dress Stripperiffic as an Unusually Uninteresting Sight, or are demure prudes and guys either get into contrived accidents or go to extreme lengths for a sight of their panties, boobies, and so on. Though only in Great Teacher Onizuka have I seen men seek and obtain panty-less panty shots.

But Great Teacher Onizuka is special, for a lot of reasons.

The main thing is that it is kind of obvious that the writes/character design Senketsu's transformed appearance for fanservice and made the rationalization for it afterwards.

higurashimerlin Since: Aug, 2012

The issue is that this is what they were thinking "Lets have our main female character wear a battle outfit that will turn on our male audience while all are men will either wear uniforms that are fully covering and if revealing, will reveal how rip their are. Otherwise be a moment of funny."

And rationalization never works. If they had actually started from how the life fibers worked, Senketsu and Junketsu would look very different.

So, I will just go ahead and point out the Mk III (or Mk IV) uniforms worn by the Elite Four were really Stripperiffic, and three of them are guys.

There's a not-inconsequential amount of male nudity as well, is what I'm saying, and judging by the use of Bishie Sparkle I'm pretty sure they're meant to be something for the straight ladies and gay men in the audience.

... Ah, well, I've never been very good at this. There's a lot of different ways to look at KLK's use of nudity.

The issue is Senketsu and Junketsu show off sexual traits while the elite four's uniforms(minus Nonon) show off their strength by display of muscles and are not sexualized. With Aikuro it is mainly supposed to be funny. And notice how Inumata gains a six-pack to show off was they all get nudist beach outfits.

You are supposed to be turned on by Ryuko and Satsuki and want to be the (male)elite four. Nonon's is the only one sexualized.
