Splash is going to be gender-flipped, though, with Channing Tatum playing a merman.
Of course, all the articles I've read have been saying that Tatum is "playing the mermaid.'' They either don't know the term "merman" exists or this is going to be a more complex film than we thought...
It's still a remake, though. Disney once redid Pollyanna and made the main character black, yet it was still a remake.
So the main leads are gender-flipped... Will this add anything new to the story? Will it shed any new light onto it? I don't think so. (At least the original had John Candy and Eugene Levy...)
There have been many more stories about mermaids than mermen. If Disney decides to make the film about a transgender mermaid, though - well, that'll be something new...
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Aldo just made me realize what it is that bothers me about the Splash! remake. It's not the gender-flip; I'm sure people will go see it if just for the sexy star (though probably not as many as the original.) However in the original, the mermaid was also a target who ultimately had to be saved- a Damsel In Distress. I have a feeling most people, of either gender, will not empathize with a "Guy in Distress." Unless Disney cheats and has The Merman rescue his love interest. But then people will complain about that too gaah this is a mess.
Yeah I think Disney will change more than just the gender of the characters.
It is kind of a mess, isn't it?
EDIT: The thought's occurred to me... I wonder if Disney is now developing a Little Mermaid remake so they can either crush or feed off the disappointment incurred by the Universal version?

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Ditto for the Jungle Book sequel vs. WB's version.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.I just kinda hope that the Splash remake just ends up basically being that Gravity Falls episode.
He wrote some music for Moana.
"People always say that you should follow your dreams... so I'm going back to bed" -meHe's writing songs for the new Mary Poppins movie.

I didn't know there was a new Mary Poppins movie in production.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here. It's a sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns, set in 1930s London with Emily Blunt as Poppins and also I misremembered Miranda's role in the film, he didn't write the songs, he's the other main lead of the film.
An Emily Blunt Mary Poppins movie does sound familiar actually.
So what you're saying is, if I'm gonna see Hamilton, I should probably see it ASAP if I want to see it with Maranda still in it.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Have a preview of the upcoming English release of the classic Italian Disney comic Mickey's Inferno.
Needless to say, this is something that I don't think too many of you will want to miss...
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."> A sunny day in Duckburg.
... Mouseton, comic. Mouseton!
> Was a dog on a cycle, who pedaled and yawned.
Well, that's one long standing question put to rest, it seems.

No, no. Clearly they went to Duckburg to put on the performance.
Besides, Duckburg is populated with the same dog-faced people as Mouseton anyway. (I'm not sure if Donald's in this, but the Three Little Pigs definitely are.)

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."That's kinda awesome.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.I suppose that nowadays the highest praise you can give to anyone is that something they did became a meme. I have no idea what that means for our culture.
Also - some pages from Mickey's Inferno, showing the variety of characters who'll be involved. (Not shown, among others: Brers Rabbit, Fox and Bear, Honest John and Gideon, and Jose Carioca and Panchito.)
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Jose Carioca and Panchito in Hell.
Well, I suppose this reinvindicates the Unshaved Mouse.
Also, the Big Bad Wolf being pecked into a skeleton by Hell hens is disturbing as all fuck.
He became a skeleton while trying to eat one of the Three Little Pigs - the pig expanded and blew up on him, and while he was fine, the wolf was left with nothing but his head on a skeleton.

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."They should animate this and add a few modern age characters- Hades instantly comes to mind. Also, yeah, Chernabog. Maybe the devil from Darkwing Duck, that'd be nice.
I'd like to see some Disney villains represent the seven deadly sins.
It's been 3000 years…Envy: Queen Grimhilde.
Greed: Flintheart Glomgold.
Gluttony: Willie the Giant.
Lust: Judge Frollo.
Pride: Gaston.
Sloth: Stinky Pete, I guess? He just wanted to sit on a display forever, after all.
Anger: Maleficent.
Now, which Disney characters represent the Seven Heavenly Virtues?
(I wonder, by the by, whether the release of "Mickey's Inferno" would cause some of the other Italian-made parodies of classic literature to see release in America... I know people would really want to see Donald Duck as Faust.)
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."
Japanese will be pleased.
