Ok so, aside from the AWESOME OPENING, Preserved Roses, the things that stand out for me most were, of course...
- Shoko's death. Seriously was not expecting them to do that, and I'm all sad now. Of course, we Never Found the Body, and this is a Sunrise series, and we know how they usually handle that.
- Haruto turning into what appears to be a vampire. Wow. And this is after that unfair contract (pause after Haruto pushes yes).
Also, in the opening, there seems to be 4 more Liberators (Kakumeiki), so we'll have to see how that turns out.

Shit's crazy.
Here's the TOS:
1. We are not responsible for your safety in cases where your physiology was incompatible with the system.
2. All the actions of the mecha are under the control and responsibility of the pilot. Any changes to the pilot's body is entirely the responsibility of the pilot, the organization is not to be blamed.
3. Once you are recorded as the designated pilot, you give up your rights to refuse orders from the organization.
4. All data from the mecha and biological information of the pilot are the property of the organization and is sent to us.
5. Once the pilot is registered, We reserve the right to kill the pilot at any time.
God damn.

Watch SymphogearIt's the same writer as Code Geass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFmGNqji4u0"Gen Urobuchi is writing a Mecha series? I shall outdo him with my own grim-dark series!"
And subs are finally out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFmGNqji4u0Fairly good first episode. I appreciate most of the mecha not having legs. Also L-Elf. Dude is hardcore, especially considering that he's The Rival
I do have to give credit to them for having the guts to kill of the love interest in the first episode.
Again, seems like the writers were taking a few notes from Gen Urobuchi. Especially with the surprising amount of Gorn.
As I said earlier, the main writer is the guy who did Code Geass.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFmGNqji4u0x9 And that's why you always read the fine print.
So many characters >_< It's gonna be hell remembering all their names.
With all the cliche-blasting going on as far as first episodes go, it'd be nice if the Dorssian faction is actually the good guys, or at the very least it's a case of Grey-and-Grey Morality. I mean, it's so painfully obvious that they're supposed to be seen as Complete Monsters that I'm thinking that that can't possibly be the case.
Or, at least, our reaction to them is supposed to be that they're complete monsters, or something. They've marked off enough of the List Of Bad Things Bad Guys Are Supposed To Do So That They Can Be Big Bad Evil People that you'd think this would be played completely straight, yet they get enough screen time as human beings that I have to believe they're going to subvert this.

Repost from the spring thread.
Man and I was worried that Suisei would be the grimdark mecha show. Should have known better, fucking Sunrise is a goddamn disappointment. So glad I got MJP. If it goes the dark route ima fucking quit mecha anime.
I'm kind of sick of the grimdark anime for no damn reason. All these directors who want to do it need to be culled by lethal injection. I'll give it another episode because lol vampires and maybe the hopes it'll pull a symphogear and get brighter but I'm not counting on it. What a fucking waste.
I can see them doing something like that for the L-elf (what a dumb name) guy, he seems more ruthlessly pragmatic than cruel (that and he's obviously a main character, = development), but skeevy Mamoru Miyano guy and trigger happy short guy are pretty far entrenched in unsympathetic character land. But it is only the first episode, so who knows.
And I here I thought that us Mecha fans wanted more Darker and Edgier mecha shows, especially after the drought of them we had throughout the last few years, when we were bashing Moe shows like K-On! to kingdom come.
However, that's about the only negative thing to say about this show thus far. As long as it continues to commit to everything it does like this, expect a reminder on why these tropes saw enough use to become cliches in the first place.
After all, Tropes Are Not Bad!
Hm, really? It turned out rather less Gundam than I'd been expecting
Continuing from the Spring 2013 page, I can't help but notice some (okay, a ton) of similarities between this and the first episode of Gundam Age. I think you're on to something: this is pretty much going to be an Anti-Age, to win back the fans Age might have failed to appeal to.

I know I am supposed think this show is awesome, but all I seen was cheap melodrama. Sorry for that.
If nothing else this Haruto guy seems become famous enough to get one or two replacement girlfriends.
Paradoxically vampires might make it better.

If Melodrama was categorically a negative, every classic opera would be seen as bargain-basement trash. I'm not saying that this will be Tosca or anything, but it's wrong to use the term as a pejorative.
That's why I said CHEAP melodrama.

Everything's been high-quality so far, if cliche. We'll see just how it develops.
Well here is a more critical impression of the first episode. Gotta look at both sides right?
So, the first episode aired today, the raw is out, and subs will be out soon.
Be sure to watch after the credits.
