Maybe. Or maybe he's even more savvy that we think he is, and he's using the paedophile scandal to eliminate his opponents within the Church. 'Course, I dont really have any reason to think this, other than it's what I would do...

Well, if his opponents are paedophiles, that's even more reason to root for him.

I recently read a book about the papacy - John Norwich's Absolute Monarchs. However, I noticed the book making quite a few citations to Eamon Duffy's Saints and Sinners. Has anyone here read both to be able to compare them in quality/informativeness?

(Is this even a thread-appropriate question?)

Is Absolute Monarchs the same book as The Popes by John Norwich?

I've read both The Popes and Saints and Sinners. Duffy is much more in depth and scholarly; Norwich on the other hand is more readable. That's just about all that separates them; Saints and Sinners is a historical study, The Popes is excellent pop-history.

The Popes is excellent pop-history.

Unfortunately, back then it wasn't Francis' call.

Here's to a good, solid housecleaning.

It's Holy Week now, the third day (since it starts with Palm Sunday). I'm not exactly a devout Catholic but I know enough about the...event.

And thus most local channels have a different lineup for the week. For example, the typically light-hearted, laugh-all-you-want, happy-times noontime shows feature short drama episodes, and some religious themes mixed in.

I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.

Well, I know that I'll have my yearly dose of Life of Brian on Friday.

While Passion of the Christ will likely be playing on TV.

We also get visitors getting their vehicles (cars, vans, jeeps, SU Vs) "blessed" here, usually in preparation for an even longer trip to the provinces that are much farther from the capital region. Our city's patron is Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, or Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje.

Then on Good Friday (this also happens on May, the city's feast day, and usually in Dec. too, Mary's feast day) there will be the pilgrimage walk which we simply call Alay Lakad or "Offered Walk". Some starts in Quiapo church (which would be at least 30kms away by my estimates), most starts at the EDSA Shrine (which features a huge statue of Mary) which is "closer", being around 15kms away.

And here's a review of a book about Easter, from the folks who brought you The Bible miniseries. http://www.skjam.com/2014/04/15/book-review-a-story-of-easter-and-all-of-us/

To bring it back to the Catholic Church, what's the current thinking on female saints?

[up]I don't think there's any current thinking different from past thinkings. They're saints and they're female.

If you're asking if we have them, yeah, we've had female saints for pretty much the whole time. The only thing they're barred from is ordination.

St Ethelburga. Now, there's a name to conjure with. (I actually like it; but, I'd never do that to a kid.)
