North African Campaign then up through Italy like COD 2: The Big Red One?

How about more Pacific Theater stuff? For instance Attu Island, fight on US soil for once. (Which happened for real.) And the Philippines (both times), and Burma, Indonesia, the rest of the Solomon Islands Campaign, New Guinea, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and more.

Tons of unused locations. That's why it was a damn shame Treyarch did that split campaign bullshit in World At War, they really should have kept to the Pacific and added more.

I heard that they had a Burma campaign in development, but they scrapped it for whatever reason. This makes me wish IW and Treyarch would start embracing single player DLC.

DLC is the devil it basically says you the developer cannot deliver a finished product in time for release. Single player DLC especially.

Or post launch support...please don't group DLC in as meaning devs are assholes, or are you saying expansion packs (which are basically big DLC these days) are also devs being assholes?

Expansion packs generally aren't advertised as anything other. They are more sequel than content patch.

Especially if said content patch is blatantly used to try and fix something that went horribly wrong at launch like the Mass Effect 3 endings.

Halo destroyed the thought of an FPS with no single-player. The days of Quake and Unreal style multiplayer only shooters are over.
Uh, Battlefield 2 was released after Halo 2 and had no singleplayer. :) (And had the Chinese as antagonists as well) Same for Left for dead and surely other games I don't know. I don't exactly mind a singleplayer campaign, but if it's crappy they might use their resources for something more usefull instead. But I'm sure that we agree that the Battlefield 4 campaign (if there is one) needs to be better than the one of Battlefield 3.

@Major Tom: Still bull, because now expansion is practically subset of DLC...distribution method and all that...after all DLC is a wide term...what CAN'T be downloaded anyway...

@Major Tom: The Medal of Honor games had about three iterations which took place in the Pacific theater. Rising Sun (console release), Pacific Assault (PC), and another smaller expansion for consoles afterwards (can't even remember that one...). The only other FPS taking place in that theater that I know of was COD: World at War, but you already mentioned that...

EDIT: Oh, and there's Battlefield 1942 and 1943! I forgot about those two!tongue

But I'm sure that we agree that the Battlefield 4 campaign (if there is one) needs to be better than the one of Battlefield 3.

If EA wants to even try and step out of the tiny niche it carved for itself and step out of Call of Duty's shadow it better have a better campaign than token "This is why multiplayer exists" stories. The Bad Company games basically dug EA into a hole because they went for the "COD-killer" route which is the same doom as what happened to Gears of War vs Halo. Battlefield 3 had much the same problems.

For all its new gadgets, the multiplayer in Black Ops II is still largely the same as it was in Call of Duty 4. What has kept that franchise going on so long like its Modern Warfare sister series is they actually go for the single player experience too as opposed to multiplayer-only.

Which again reinforces the main point. At the time the first Halo game came out FPS games were largely multiplayer-only Quake clones and such. Excuse Plot if it existed at all reigned supreme. Then came Halo and its vast universe and story which drove multiple sequels to this day, it's its primary driver today. When the first Modern Warfare came about it did a radical departure from the token plots of the World War 2 games before it and actually focused on telling an original story and the three games succeeded wildly at that aspect. Then Black Ops came and showed that Treyarch was capable of writing which left really only EA as the only FPS maker who didn't embrace quality single player campaigns. They tried to change that in Battlefield 3 but came up horrendously short. If they want to emerge from obscurity and even try for the greatness that Call of Duty and Halo built they really need to up their game on the single player.

There are plenty of un-explored WW 2 theaters: The early Norway campaigns, which were a dazzling display of British military genius and incompetence at the same time. Operation Typhoon, where General Hoth was halted before Moscow. The Finns' involvement in Barbarossa and the Continuation War, (the story of the only Axis democracy could be really interesting, actually). Or how about the German advance on Baku and Grozny? Or the sieges of Sebastopol, Brest, or Leningrad? Then there is the North African Campaign, or the Burma Campaign under Bill Slim (possibly the best Allied ground commander of the war), the partisan campaigns in Eastern Europe, the Red Army's advance into East Prussia and Poland, the Courland Pocket, the Forest Brothers, the last of whom came out of hiding in 1995 or the Chinese front and the Hump.

All of these could give one the potential for an intelligent game, which took an honest look at the war and why it was really shitty, as well as enough of a range for a good gameplay experience. All I want from the next battlefield is that it is more Spec Ops The Line than Modern Warfare.

Well just from preview page, we already know that it's going to take place in the present day, the US Marine Corps will once again be one of the playable sides, and the artstyle is inspired by BF 3.

...Sigh. Not getting my hopes up for this one...sad

This is my surprised face :-|

Is it me, or are "Modern" military shooters becoming tired and boring far quicker than WWII ones ever did?

They shouldn't really. There's such a range of armies and weaponry nowadays you could do anything.
Like, say, Falklands 2. Or hell, set a shooter in the Falklands.
Ruritania border wars. Australia vs Asian Coalition.

[up][up]

A lot of the more "diverse" settings in modern war have serious bitterness behind them. A Falklands War shooter could be hugely controversial in the UK and/or Argentina. The Kosovo conflict, the Kashmir skirmish, or any of Africa's periodic clusterfucks would stir controversy no game designer would dare court. It also strikes me as bad taste, potentially.

The thing is, the same applies to WWII, or an unexplored setting. People say "we're bored of WWII", what they mean is "we're bored of Omaha Beach and the bocage, Iwo Jima/Okinawa/Peleliu/Saipan (the gameplay is always the same anyway), and maybe a bit the Eastern Front (or rather, Stalingrad then Berlin) if we're lucky. There is a huge vein of untapped potential, and most of it is past its "controversy sell-by date".

Yeah, to be honest, I really want a WW 2 game. Playing the Project Nova level in BLOPS has made me yearn for that simpler time.

^ I'd only be happy for a new World War 2 shooter if and only if it explored new locations.

As I said earlier in the thread: "If I have to storm Omaha Beach or some French hamlet one more time..."

Seriously we could set it in Burma, the Philippines (1941/1942 and/or 1944), Alaska at Attu Island for one or two levels, New Guinea, Indonesia, China, the rest of the Solomon Islands, untapped island battles such as Tarawa and the rest of the Guadalcanal campaign, have a naval level (and I don't mean Black Cats from World At War style), have an aerial level and I don't mean bomber gunner or bystander aboard the craft, go to mainland Italy, Finland (face Simo Hayha as a boss?), and more.
