Titmouse & J. Vasquez teaming up on Squee short, possible JTHM film

It was announced at ECCC this weekend that Titmouse, using a script written by Jhonen Vasquez, would be going ahead with a short called "Squee versus the Labyrinth of Meat" and that if it did well it'd result in a Johnny The Homicidal Maniac feature film.

"Squee versus the Labyrinth of Meat" would center around Squee's parents again trying to unload him, this time selling him to "McWillie's", a fast food place that turns kids into meat. Squee would then lead an escape attempt.

No voice cast or ETA yet, sadly.

Oh hey, Jhonen wrote this? Sounds pretty cool and people have been yearning for him to do something other than prints and character designs.

Well, he said at the panel that, after Zim, comics stopped being enough for him. So that explains that.

But he has done stuff recently—stories for the Fringe comic book, contributions to Marvel's "What If?", character designs for Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, and of course Jellyfist.

It's testing the waters for a Johnny the Homicidal Maniac movie. I think it's gonna be on [adult swim], more likely than not, especially given who's animating it.

Mary Harrington (the Nick exec who commissioned Invader Zim) initially wanted to make a Squee! show, but realized it might cause kids to seek out the comics—less a problem now than ten years ago when the books had just come out, but nevertheless something I feel would deter anyone who'd consider it.

That is insane. I never imagined this kind of thing was possible. Here's hoping it succeeds and Nny gets onto tv. Just Squee is great, though.

Thinking about it, Titmouse is probably the perfect studio for this production. I can't wait to see it.

Well, JTHM is apparently gonna be done as a film if this short goes over well.

I dunno if it'll get a theatrical release, but fingers crossed.

I doubt a theatrical release, though anything is technically possible I suppose. The key would be to spread news of Squee far and wide and hope the ratings prove the viability of such an option.

Easy. Just slap "from the creator of Invader Zim" on all the ads. It'll spread like wildfire.

WOW, these guys worked on ATLA, Pilgrim and Super Jail? Now I'm interested.

They only did the title sequence for ATLA.

Which is, admittedly, one of the most AWESOME openings in Nickelodeon history.

Given that I really have absolutely nothing else to worry about at the moment, I'll concern myself with whether or not the short will use the eyeball logo. Its absence on the cover of the Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors irked me.
