Eh, this is a nation that has spent the majority of its existence actively involved in a war. Most of its citizens strive up to the ideal of the "American Warrior" who fights for the ultimate right and blasts evildoers with boomstick in hand. And those who serve in the military are seen as the authority on morality and personal strength, something that's very important to pretty much everyone.

To put it in Civilization terms, we are a warmongering nation that's trying to win all the other victories. Once we completely undo the way our culture works and structure society once again from the ground up (that, or just not be at war for a century or two), then we'll be less aggressive and violent. ...Sadly, it's not much the individual can do, we can try and influence, but ultimately it'll take either revolution or time.

Why do you fight? Why do you exist?

America does not seem all so bad to me though, the gun violence problem is really only in comparison to other "first world" states who have their own problems but when USA people start blaming media on their problems the rest of the world look at what is watched and played, see that we are watching and playing much of the same stuff (or wish it) and then exclaim "what is wrong with Americans?!"

The gun violence though is bad enough that gun deaths are about 100 times more common in America than in the worst other first world countries.

Bravo to Obama for saying it. I've never seen him speak out against games. Don't remember if he's said good stuff before this. This doesn't mean he's going to be light or heavy on certain genres. The man's started trying to crack down on the gun laws and make them stricter.

You can bet he'll have plenty to say on the FPS genre, if not others involving weapons.

And the big problems with Politicians are serious flaws in human nature altogether. Some might be worse or better than others, but the truth is we wouldn't even have these discussions if the human race weren't a violent and nasty species to start with. If they could get away with it, the majority would lie, cheat, and steal every day, and if someone pissed them off enough, they'd kill them and bury them in a large desert. We like violent games because there's still a part of us lurking deep down that's built for a harsh world. That's also part of the reason the most successful religions ever have come out of the strictest climates on the planet. They suit our nature.
