I'm considering holding a group, freeform, Tokusatsu (Super Sentai and Kamen Rider specifically) inspired game. The idea of it is it would be set in an original universe and would chronicle a team of teenage magi trying to save the modern world from other sorcerers and monsters.

I may also allow some other players to be villains and some to play heroes later on.

I want to know if there would be any interest in a game like that first. Than I would construct it and put the signup stuff here.

Edit: Sign Up-stuff is below the line in this post.

  • STORY

Henshin!

Our world is in danger! Magi and monsters of all kinds are attacking the Earth realm! With modern weapons unable to bring them down it has fallen upon a handful of young guardians to save the world...

They call themselves The Mystics.

Even since the times of King Artur The Mystics have bravely defended the world from millions of magical creatures which threatened it. All while keeping their presence a secret. Each generation they passed down their weapons which gave them their magic to their children and trained them for whatever dangers lie ahead.

Now in 2013 it has fallen upon a new generation to take up the mantle. Our story begins in the sleepy town of North-Woods. A supposedly normal American town. This small town secretly houses a huge concentration of magic.

Are these new Mystics up for defending the world? Can they win against hundreds of creatures and powerful enemies that can match them every step of the way!? Or will they fail before they even get a chance?

We shall find out soon enough...

(OOC: Please note that this is far from the complete story. This section here is mostly to get people interested and inform the players of what most of their character's will know going into this game. More information will be given depending on how much your PC would know in-game.)

  • RULES

1.) Please at least attempt to use proper spelling and grammar in HL:TM. I understand the occasional mistake or misunderstanding. However, the game will be much less fun if it is less a superhero game and more a struggle to understand what a person is saying. If you need help there are multiple websites and tools online available to help you.

2.) Attempt to make each in character post at least a paragraph, (four to five) sentences long. While you can post the occasional sentence to keep the action going or during the heat of battle I want you to at least expand effort in your posts. Don't just give us an action describe what your character is thinking, their facial expressions, body language, their thoughts, and whatever else you think would help get us into your characters head. I'm sure you can think of something.

3.) Please do not pick fights with the GM or the other members. If you have a problem with a ruling or a certain player's attitude please politely bring it up in a pm.

4.) Please try to post at least once every three days. After three days without a response your character may be used as a npc when needed until you return. If you need to take an absence for longer than that please notify me or post about it in the OOC section. During combat this may lower to two days depending on the posting rate.

5.) Please wait at one week after the game starts before you quit. Sometimes you sign up and turn out to not like it, life gets in the way, you get bored, or you just decide you don't feel like roleplaying I understand that. But I'd like players who at least would like to take a fair stab at this game first.

Important NP Cs that will play a part in the game. How big depends on the players actions.

Dr. Benton East

Age: 30

A young PHD acting as a teacher of history of North-Woods High. A quiet man who seems far more interested in the material than the students he teaches. Because of this he is often mistaken as cold or uncaring. The people who are close to him can testify its not the case but try telling that to the average student. Is rumored to have wanted to be an archeologist in his youth but he seems awfully quiet about the subject.

A tall, slender man with slicked-back black hair. Frequently comes to school wearing a suit and tie.

Sarah Hall

Age: 16

The head of North-Wood High's newspaper club and amateur photographer. Described by even her closest friends as a workaholic. This teenager is one of the few who believes that North-Woods is very different from the other towns and desperately wants to find out how.

A short, red-haired girl who almost always wears green. Most often in the form of a t-shirt and jeans.

Adrian Eric

Age: 62

An old man running the local antique shop. A friendly salesmen. Though how much is genuine and how much is him trying to get a sale is unknown. Has lived in North-Woods for most of his life and almost everybody knows of him even if they haven't met him. While he isn't aware of it a lot of his antiques have real magical properties.

He has white hair, a woven white t-shirt and black pants.

Alex Eric

Age: 15

Adrian Eric's grandson. His parents are rumored to have died about a year ago and thus he is living with his grandfather. A relaxed joker by nature he is still somewhat avoided by the North-Wood kids because many of the kids find his grandfather rather creepy.

A medium height kid with short blond hair who frequently wears black clothing.

...Would probably roll a Kamen Rider since that's what I know from those two, buuut... Would magical girl warriors also count? I mean, it wasn't any good, but there was a Sailor Moon toku, after all...

I think you misunderstood. You wouldn't literally be making a Kamen Rider you'd be making a new Henshin Hero in this new universe. You could be make a Magical Girl Warrior though sure that could work.

[up][up]Cool!

But...I hope this won't dissuade you though there will be some restrictions on your characters choice of main weapon. Also you can't be too powerful when you start or I could make a good enough threat for you to start.

[up]I have a character sheet already. Like I say above in this post there might be a few more restrictions on your weapon choice and less so on magic. Hope that it won't dissuade you.

Gah...anyway to center some paragraphs? That does not look good to me. Anyway edited my post to include the sign-up information. You may start writing up your characters now.

Here is the mentor character I will be using most of the time.

First name: Zennith

Last name: Grendell

Codename: N/A

Age: 426

Character Relations: Has acted as a mentor to the Mystics for many generations. Though he often takes a stern expression with the four guardians he is ready and willing to do anything to protect them. Some Mystics may not know him however, as he does not enjoy talking with many personally. Choosing only to help them with missions.

Side Character Relations: Since he is unable to leave the library he does not know any of those people. In addition, he also chooses to keep himself hidden from the regular humans based on their past reactions to him.

Race: Gargoyle

Race Abilities

-Ageless: The gargoyles appear ageless to the human eye. They have a regular lifespan of five hundred years.

- Flight: The gargoyles possess wings that can carry them effortlessly into the air. They can glide, or fly for several hours on these wings.

-Thick Hide: Nothing less than a bursting shell or an enchanted weapon can fully pierce through the thick skin of this creature!

-Claws & Fangs: As sharp as a sword's blade! This is the main defense of these powerful creatures.

Race Weaknesses

-Sun Stone: All of these creatures are forced into turning into stone in the daylight hours. Frozen in place at the exact moment of their transformation they cannot move again until night. During this time they are only as resilient as rock and can be easily be killed by a swift blow of a mace or a hammer.

-Thin-Wings: While their skin is very thick and hard to pierce their wings are much less formidable. A large enough cut can easily render one of their wings unusable.

-Nocturnal Light: Gargoyles are creatures of the night. As such it is very easy to momentarily blind them with a bright light source.

Guardian Weapon: N/A

Spells:

1.) "Ezek" Enchantment: Zennith can perform minor enchantments over objects. He can create teleportation orbs, armor, enchanted cloth, and separate somebody's spirit from the Guardian Weapons.

His enchantments can last indefinitely but depending on the difficulty the Ezek rituals can take anywhere from two minutes, (enchanting cloth before it is worn) to forty eight hours, (removing a person's spirit from a Guardian Weapon.) This leaves him physically exhausted.

2.) Ardex: Zeenith has some ability with alchemy and knows the most common spell. Turning lead into gold. He refuses to let The Mystics use it for their personal benefit. It takes him only fifty seconds but he must not be distracted for the entirety of it. Lest the lead will melt.

Skills: Zennith can use a spear very well, has decent knowledge of hand to hand fighting, an advance knowledge of history, and is an expert on identifying creatures. If given an opportunity he can mix potions fairly well.

Equipment: A single small spear, and metal armor around his torso. He does not like going into battle with many heavy things weighting him down. Orb Type: Yellow

Weaknesses: Thanks to a curse placed on him by one of the Mystics many enemies he cannot ever leave the library he is currently in or he will turn to stone on the spot! He tends to distrust humans he does not know and is very defensive. He chooses to never lie and will always do his best to keep his word.

Henshin!: N/A

Appearance: A 6:8 teal-colored gargoyle with a small tuff of black hair on his head. Whenever one sees him he is always wearing a suit of armor over his midsection and wielding a spear.

Hero Appearance: N/A

Costume Type: Armor

Backstory: A grandson of Ezek Grendell one of the most powerful enchanters of all the gargoyles in the Earth realm Zennith always had a great love of magic. Unfortunately for him he possessed very little talent for it and even less time to practice. Nearly every day of his life was spent running from superstitious humans who hated and feared his kind. It came to a time where his clan was one of the last in Europe!

On his fiftieth birthday he went out on his own to scavenge for food when he was ambushed! Thirty bandits descended on him before he knew where he was! Clipping his wings before he knew what to do. They demanded any enchanted equipment he could give them and threatened death on his entire clan should he fail them! When all hope looked lost he saw a group of four warriors and in a matter of minutes the bandits had been silenced! Feeling he owed them his life he introduced them to his clan and promised them help whenever they needed it.

For the next three-hundred years he did just that. Until one day fifty years ago. The Mystics heard of a place called North-Woods in America full of magical creatures and artifacts. While going to investigate they encountered another magi. In the ensuring battle she cursed the old gargoyle. From then on he could never set foot outside the library or he would instantly and irreversibly be turned to stone! To this day he still upholds his promise to protect the Mystics!

Important NP Cs: N/A

Motive: His sense of debt and gratitude to the Mystics of centuries ago keeps him helping the new team whenever he can. Secretly he hopes to live to see the day where he can live amongst the humans without fear.

Other: N/A

Player's Use: Yes

Player Schedule: Mostly between 8:00-11:00 AM and anytime between 2:00 and 10:00PM on the weekdays. On the weekends it varies a lot.

All right, this character is probably going to go badly one way or another (a thing I seem to say every time now) but I shall try it.

  • Name: Ignatius Fiennes

  • Codename: Lux

  • Age: 14

  • Backstory: Ignatius was born to two Fae, very different except for their race. His mother was what was known as a Fairy of the day and his father a Fairy of the night, thus making him a Fairy of twilight, a variety normally excluded from his kind. His father was a traveller and a Mystic, going around the world to save it from its magical problems, and although he fell in love with Ignatius' mother, due to the divided nature of the Fae he could not stay with her, and when Ignatius was born to them he could not stay either so his father took him with him and moved on with his travels.

  • Ignatius grew up moving around the world with his father, knowing little of his mother and experiencing everything the world had to offer, from the mundane to the weird to the magical. His father wanted what was best for him but their own kind, still involved in their absurd division, offered nothing to a half-breed, causing Ignatius to slowly grow to hate the vast majority of Fairies. He learned about the world piece-by-piece, exploring with his father, and he learned about his kind's abilities but having neither the support of his peers nor a consistent home had an impact on his development, and one that did not escape his father's attention.

  • His father eventually decided that it would be best for Ignatius to settle down, and convinced his son that it was for the best. A life among the Fae was impossible due to Ignatius' nature, but with the possession of spells that let them hide their supernatural nature they managed to find a place among humans. They settled down in North-Woods, and for several years Ignatius started to become somewhat more normal and, by his father's training, started towards becoming a proper Mystic.

  • Race: A Fairy of twilight.

  • Fairies are divided, both in terms of abilities and in a cultural schism, into two types. There are Fairies of the day and Fairies of the night, and successful breeding between the two produces a Fairy of twilight. While both kinds of fairy have a strong disdain of the other, the hatred for the "half-breeds" of twilight is much stronger, and the majority of Fairies refuse to deal with them, or even commit hate crimes, assaulting and driving out twilight fairies and their families.

  • Fairies seem to be humanoid with large elegant wings, as well as solid coloured eyes and appearances that fit what is typically described as beautiful. The natural hair colour, skin, eyes and wings of a fairy are all variations on one colour, which has a lot of variation but depends to some degree on the variety of fairy; Fairies of the day have colours typically have colours such as bright greens and reds, often said to be like plants and fires. Fairies of the night have colours that are darker, typically browns and greys. Fairies of twilight are where the largest variation of colour is found between the wings, skin and eyes. The hair if not dyed, and the skin are always a deep orange or light blue similar to the sky at twilight, but the eyes are the one of those two colours that the skin is not, and the wings a cloudy grey. There are some other physical differences, fairies of light tending to have longer hair and more slender bodies, as well as wings that extend further in width, where Fairies of night have more naturally large bodies and taller wings, with some having clawed toes and fingers. Fairies of twilight have a random selection of these features, but normally have wings of a massive size in both height and width. Fairies have two forms; One is human-sized and mostly as described previously, whereas the other is much smaller and emits a strong glow of their wing colour. For the fairies with claws these tend to be larger and their senses are somewhat stronger, but they are otherwise the same.

    • Race Abilities:

      • Flight: With their wings out they can easily fly through the air, with their smaller forms being better at it but the larger ones still being able.

      • Form Transformation: Fairies can transform between smaller and larger forms, as mentioned previously, although the transformation takes about a minute and must be uninterrupted, as well as being limited to a single use a day. The transformation also takes a fair deal of magic to operate.

    • Radiance: Fairies naturally generate light in their smaller forms and when distressed subconsciously create large bursts.

    • Speed and Agility: Their powers of flight allow for great speed and agility, especially in their smaller forms.

    • Race Weaknesses:

      • Fragile forms: Especially with their wings and in their smaller forms Fairies are physically fragile.

      • Time Dependence: Fairies can run off normal human sustenance but to use their full potential they must regularly use their smaller forms during their time of day (day, night or twilight), "charging" their magical ability.

      • Disguise Distress: A fairy will slowly grow distressed and uneasy when their form is in any way compromised, be it by disguise supply or just by hiding their wings. A good disguise spell will allow about seven hours before it goes too far, but it is a constant issue only partially reduced by learning to deal with it.

      • Darkness: Although this is a rare problem for species that naturally give off light if they are unable to produce light or find an outside source of it their power and mental state will be greatly disturbed, and their magic will slowly build up, emitting a massive and possibly harmful burst of magic beyond the normal defence mechanism burst once possible.

  • Spells: Some magic is only accesable to fairies, and although he dislikes his race Ignatius still gravitates towards this.

    • Fae's deception: Allows the larger form to appear like a human with two large scars running down their back where their wings would connect and very bloodshot eyes. It is physical transformation, but manages to run for about six or seven hours without triggering distress. For a much larger amount of magic it can also be used to make the smaller form invisible. It is broken by more than thirty seconds of sustained utter darkness, and the disguised form is not capable of radiance without breaking the disguise.

    • Flucius: A spell that allows the manipulation of light, including seeming to outright create or destroy it, although the technical workings of the spell does not involve creating or destroying energy. It allows one to shape and release light in any form, but it naturally produces a massive wave of intensely bright light, which requires effort to control. It can be used as a harmful energy beam, but doing so is difficult and requires it to be concentrated into a thin beam and them for more magic to be pumped in.

  • Abilities: Ignatius, despite his hatred of his race, carries their typical abilities naturally. He is agile and quick in flight and understands every nuance of light. He also posses some of the more stereotypical qualities, a typical trickster manipulating people into what he wants and evacuating quickly if things go wrong. He also gained some skills from his travels with his father, including a great deal of languages and knowledge of other cultures, both magical and mundane, and a strong capability of adapting to new situations.

  • Equipment: Ignatius carries a long katana-like sword, the Guardian Sword, which allows for a violent application of his agile and hectic style of moving. As is typical for fairies, he tends to go into battle with very little else, except for his teleport orb and when transformed his armour. Orb type: Yellow

  • Henshin!: Naturally for a fairy, there is a very large amount of light. A large sphere of light seems to grow around him, eventually completely covering him and several streams of light orbit around it. His wings then grow some more and pop out of the sphere, at which point all of the streams of light feed into them. The sphere then explodes in a massive burst of multicoloured light, revealing his transformed form.

  • Appearance: Normally Ignatius seems to be a relatively tall and skinny twilight fairy, with orange skin, blue eyes and colossal grey wings to the point of impracticality. He has claws, but they are incredibly small. His hair remains the skin-coloured orange, and is in an bizarre shape which just seems to a collection of spikes. When he uses magic to seem human his wings are replaced by two large scars, his claws replaced by absurdly sharp nails, his eyes become normal blue eyes and his skin the darker side of Caucasian.

  • When transformed, his looks seem to be a more extreme version of his normal large fairy form. He becomes taller and slightly more muscular, and his wings become yet larger. All colours are the same as his undisguised fairy form, and his eyes constantly emit blue light. His hair becomes much larger and several blue streaks appear in it, and his claws extend and sharpen, also glowing. His attire also changes, becoming light armour of tanned leather and glowing vines which forms an armoured vest on his torso and covers his legs but leaves him barefooted and his arms covered only by two identical bracers, of a similar composition to the armour.. He also gains a large black domino mask, which spreads across his face and somewhat mimics the shape of his wings.

  • Important NPCs: Only one person matters to him anymore, that being his father. His father is a 54 year old night fairy, and what he describes as a retired adventurer, now a professional novelist and secretly a mage.

  • Player's Use: Yes

  • Player Schedule: Entirely sporadic times at weekends and about 11 AM to 5PM on Weekdays, except for Wednesdays where I won't be available until 12 or 1, and on Fridays where it is very hard to tell.

Writing that got weirder and weirder, so I'm saying nothing about quality.

[up]Nearly everything seems to be in order so far. There are a few things I'm a little weary of still though.

1.) The Fae's natural ability to switch forms can work but it seems to be really easy to abuse. As in "you want to hit me well I just got larger and can take a hit better" or he could shrink quickly into some place they couldn't go. Please expand on this detail, though I may say no depending on how powerful it turns out to be.

2.) Is Lux's light spell also an energy beam? Can it hurt creatures that are not naturally hurt by light?

3.) Can Fae's turn off their radiance even in their natural form if they so choose?

4.) You are the sword-wielder then? You meant for that Katana to be the Guardian Sword right?

5.) Your character can perform magic even at the start but it is much weaker without the weapon. I just want to make sure you understand.

Also, personal thing but could you please put some spaces in between the sections? It would make it easier to look at and I would have more fun reading it.

Thank you for your time and I hope to see where this character goes. It looks interesting.

I can't edit it right now (only have access to a device that can't handle text that long) but in answer:

1.This can easily be changed. Perhaps a case of only freely being able to change at their time and with quite a hefty magic cost?

2. The light spell can be used as a harmful energy beam, but doing so requires concentrating the large wave into a thin beam and then feeding it more magic, which is very difficult.

3. Fae normally can't turn off their radiance but some spells do remove it.

4.The katana is the guardian sword.

5. Understood.
