Suggestion: Dramatic Disappearing Display

I have a suggestion to make. The upper screenshot shows typical gameplay with the status bar, but in the lower screenshot, at the Final Boss, almost the whole status bar is gone, save for the powerup box. I think it would be a good illustration. How would this do?

Above: Normal level. Below: Final Boss.

These images look very different, and not for the right reasons.

Did a quick screenshot test on Immaterial and Missing Power. Does it work better? If those particular shots are bad, I can retake them, though it's a little hard to play and take screenshots at the same time in a fighting game. I originally had it in .png, but that was too large, so I made a .jpg instead. (Native size is twice that.)

[up]I kinda like the darker screen as the one without display. There's a more omnious feel to it.

[up] Was thinking it would make the GUI stand out more versus blending in with the background.

Is the bottom one the pre-match presentation/quipping?

[up] Yes, now I wonder how hard it would be to fit the whole moon in there...

On a side note, I stupidly forgot there was a level select and played halfway thru before remembering about it.

I played through it for the fun of it. tongue

But doing it like that makes it kind of not an example, which also makes it look like not an example.

Anyway, any other opinions?

I don't have a huge preference between them...should we crowner this?

Out of Another Duck's and justanid's images, I like the latter better because there's absolutely no kind of HUD on the lower screen. In Duck's image there's still a bit of text left on screen; this doesn't illustrate the trope as well as the other.

However…

You seem be forgetting the first word in the title: "Dramatic". The trope's description and title states that it's about the HUD disappearing during climactic events. As someone who's not familiar with the game in those images, I don't see anything particularly "dramatic" happening when the HUD is gone. In the OP's image it's clear that what's going on in the lower screen is more "dramatic" than the top one, thus the "display" has "disappeared". Even if someone somehow doesn't get it, the caption should clear things up.

tl;dr: I vote for the Super Mario World image.

Good point about the dramatic part, but I'd say the OP has the same problem for anyone not familiar with Mario. Plus the two pictures are of different areas and Mario is wearing a cape in one.

Might as well add a swirly vortex of doom verison.

[up][up] That's cool.

EDIT: Blank crowner's hooked. I'm having to post from my phone for the time being; can someone please fill the crowner? Thanks!

[up][up][up][up] That definitely works better than the other two images from the game. Still not sure if it's the best, but I guess I'll just vote in the crowner and see what happens.

I think I put one too few [up]s in that last post. Oh well, I'm sure you know what I meant.

Small note, the Sakuya one isn't actually an example. It's not from when the display has disappeared, but before it appeared in the first place.

Bump for votes; as of right now:

Touhou 7.5 Reimu vs. Suika: 4 (yeas:5 nays:1) 5.00 : 1
Super Mario World: 1 (yeas:4 nays:3) 1.33 : 1

The rest are in the red.

Well, it's been a week and the two in the green are now practically neck and neck in "no consensus" land. I'll let this run through the weekend and if we don't have a clear winner by Monday, I'll lock it as "no consensus".

Looks like we've got a winner. It's up, potholed, and tagged; add a caption if you want one. Locking up.
