Remember when Pokemon was a thing? This troper does. Dayum those where the days. The days when one could get by with stating that their favorite PokƩmon was Ditto without being the butt of a sexual joke. But not anymore.

Also, my little sisters both loved those animal-shaped wristband things. Never understood them.

@Quartar There still pretty popular with kids or at least my younger cousin really likes them. Its just not as socially acceptable if you aren't a kid.

Nah, I think how it goes is that Pokemon is fine when you're a kid, not in middle school, might be okay in high school, and everyone's totally cool with it in college. That's how I've seen it anyway.

@0dd Yeah that sounds about right actually. The point is its an age thing, not a it was popular in the 90s thing.

Well, except maybe for when Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald were the current generation. I think that was the only major dip in Pokemon's popularity, and it seemed to not last very long anyway.

Something that definitely seemed to be a fad videogame-wise, though? Motion controls. Not saying the Wii itself was a fad, though without it we wouldn't have gotten the pointlessness of the Kinect or the PS3 Move. And then there's all those gimmicky motion control games for the Wii. There were games that integrated it seamlessly and unobtrusively, but then there were games where the gameplay hinged upon it where the controls were awful and awkward. And now the Wii U seems to be making a point of killing that. And I commend it.

Could we say touchscreens are a fad too? Especially in light of Windows 8 being specifically designed for touchscreen monitors, the Wii U gamepad, and the popularity of tablets?

How about the movie Hercules? I can still remember how big that movie was. There was merchandise for it everywhere. It was like a forerunner of Pokemon. Of course, it was an awesome movie, so that helped too. [tup]

Princess Aurora is underrated, pass it on.

Before Gangnam Style, there was SNSD with its Gee.

Before that, there were Wonder Girls with their Tell Me.

I wasn't around in these forums when those were fads. Anyone remember those?

[up]I haven't heard of the last one until now, but I don't think it was worth pausing Boogie Down Productions briefly to listen to.

Crappy Lion King fanart! No one makes it anymore! I loved looking at it and laughing, lol. Now all of it is several years old.

I remember when everyone was making these. A lot of the ones I used to like just sound terrible now.

[up] Oh lord, how could I have forgotten about those? And you're right, many of them didn't age well. tongue

Do the creepy featureless anime bases on deviantART count as a fad? Can't count how many if those I've run across.

Didn't age well? Most weren't even good at the time they were made.

Yes, but when you have only one Sparta remix to your fandom's name on You Tube, the mind has ways of rationalizing. :B

Eh, even the ones involving fandoms I'm in I judged harshly.

That's right, I expect my fanmade videos that were probably made by bored 12/13-year-olds to have PROFESSIONAL QUALITY.
