Not to mention good old fashioned ball bearings.

True. Interestingly the claymore mine creators didn't just simply throw in any old steel balls. They apparently needed to find a steel that was soft enough that it didn't shatter when the charge went off. While that did create a cloud of shrapnel the pieces were too small and fly far enough. The stuff they used was softer and it deforms when the mine goes off.

I would imagine mines in fallout that are not just whatever the hell thrown in might be more picky about the junk they throw into the mine. Almost reminds me of the bad days of nail bombs in the 90's in the US.

High resolution texture pack now forcefully installed by Steam.

Any way to stop it from downloading once it's already started?

No, but just take and dont get the dlc or uncheck it from the box and it wont download it.

Any thing it is downloading unless you got the high res-dlc from the dlc store is a patch, not it.

There are finally enough mods from Nuarblack that I can now emulate being a Sith Lord. He released a PS 4 exclusive weapons pack mod that adds "magic" powers like elemental fist weapons and elemental grenades.

So, I've finally started to play and oh my god this game guys

Codsworth, man.

Don't let that gentlemanly courtesy fool you, Codsworth will cut a bitch. In half.

I was shooting at some raiders and they had me pinned down and we were exchanging fire

And Codsworth just leeeisurely floats along to behind their cover

and I hear a buzzsaw roaring

and some bloodcurdling screams

and Codsworth comes by covered in blood splatters and cheerfully quips at me

and oh my god I'm never sleeping again thanks for that.

Codsworth is awful for me because I've got the Dogmeat as an Extra Companion mod. I don't know what it is but Codsworth's AI just can't figure out when to attack and when to stay by me, it's kind of annoying.

By himself though Codsworth is a war machine.

I mean he's got a freaking flamethrower.

This was a machine someone purchased to have in their house, cook their meals, and occasionally tend to their child.

I actually like Codsworth. He is one of my favorite Companions. I keep him as a floating bot but otherwise heavily modify him. I even used the Eyebot mod and made him into a E-DE like Killer Eyebot.

Of course I am a bit biased because I picture Codsworth as the robot version of Terry Pratchett's character Willikins.

I don't need to change Codsworth from a Mr. Handy in order to make him look badass. In fact, I found out that leaving him as one allows for more Min-Maxing. At his best, he looks like an electric ball of death.

So, I had this nutso experience two days ago.

I found this place called Old Gullet sinkhole. Big hole in the ground. Not many of those in the Commonwealth, eh. So yeah, I see a tail. A big one. I know there's a Deathclaw in there. Why am I going to go in there? Because I see that national guard chest sitting at the bottom. And because I'm roleplaying Negan and I've got Lucille ready, so IDGAF.

I shoot up 3-5 stimpaks, some Med-X, and get ready to go to town.

Thing lunges out of a damned busted-up shack, grabs me before I can take a swing at it, and slams me into the water.

Except, it holds me under the water. The screen turns black. And I end up in a cave, amazed by Bethesda actually creating a scenario where an enemy can forcefully send you underground. I thought it was the start of some hidden quest.

Best of all I had Deadly Ghouls of the Commonwealth on, so the cave had 3-5 Endless Ones sitting at the bottom.

Naturally once I got out of that I found myself in the locked house overlooking the sinkhole, looted it, and ran like hell when a Yao Guai showed up.

Nuarblack's "Play Bunker and Combat Simulator" Mod, as well as his series of Weapons Pack mods. I use them all for different characters, and they've been really fun to use.

"DLC Leveled List Integration" allows DLC weapons and ammo to spawn with mooks in the main game. It also adds DLC weapons and ammo to vendors.

"Water Redux" for better looking water.

"NPC's Travel" to add over 120 new NPC's that travel all over the Commonweatlh. The furhtue you play into the game, the most new NPC's you unlock.

"Limited Minutemen Quests". Self explanatory.

"Key NPC's Legendary" turns most plot relevant characters into Legendary versions of themselves. You don't have to fight them unless the storyline you're doing dictates you have too. For example, Kellogg will be Legendary now, as will all Coursers, but you don't need to fight Coursers unless the story demands it.

FO 4 acquired! New computer being worked on and hopefully finished by next week.

The game is currently on a half-off sale on Steam til the 28th so you can grab the base game for $30. The season pass is on a 33% sale so you can grab it for $33. About as good as you'll get for now I think.

So I'm checking out the recommended specs for Fallout 4 for Steam.

I have 12G of RAM, I have plenty of empty disk space. My graphics processor is not the best in the world; it's an Intel HD Graphics 5500, so there's that. It plays Skyrim just fine, even with a shit ton of mods and a graphics update.

So why is this game laggy as shit? And why does it always just hang up in the middle of making my dude's face? I'm tempted to just go with one of the presets, just to get past that screen and see if I can even play.

And why does it always just hang up in the middle of making my dude's face?

[lol] Welcome to my world.

8GB of RAM, NVIDIA GTX 970, upper-middle class graphics card.

Could not. Make it past. The f'cking character creation scene when you leave the Vault.

Turned out that updating my drivers to 372.90 let me play the game without it crashing every 5-45 minutes. But anytime I go into Boston itself the game lags to sh't. And if I'm getting rather crass it's because, heh heh, this f'cking problem persists after god knows how many updates and-

-deep breath-

Few if anyone can give you any advice besides "update your drivers."

Makes you want to scream, don't it?

Just change your drivers to different versions and try to "stress test" the game by reloading at the character creation screen. I did that until I was able to play through it normally.

RAM might be the problem. I assume you've already tried turning some settings down? Personally, I use the NVIDIA GeForce optimization tool for everything; by default, it errors on the side of weaker graphics, so it might bring the game down to a lower level than what you would normally be comfortable with.

I have 12

gigabytes

of RAM

My RAM should be leaving their requirements in the dust.

And yes, I've turned off God rays, Depth of Vision, Occlusion, etc.

You know, basically every reason I'm playing this damned game instead of Fallout New Vegas?

Actually, the RAM comment was more at Soble. Eight is on the lower end these days.

But yeah, looks like you've got an actual glitch instead of just insufficient requirements. I'm not a tech guy, so I can't give you advice beyond the obvious that I'm sure you've thought of. Make sure nothing is running in the background, check your startup programs to make sure there's nothing you're unaware of, run anti-virus, etc etc. The only other thing I can think is that your RAM got corrupted and is dragging your system down. That happened to me, which is why I'm at 10 gigs instead of 12 now.

It's just kinda odd because Fallout 4 has been shockingly stable for a Bethesda game. I've only had crashes when I pile on the mods.

I'mma just pick the vaguely Asian-looking guy and go with it. Maybe I'll actually get to play some before it crashes this time. If not, I'm just going to go drop a large wooden brace on a dragon.
