They know we're using it — there's a link to our Ship Sinking page in the description! Because of that, I reckon permission can be inferred if it wasn't already asked for.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. So the artist is aware of our use of the image, but doesn't even hint at being displeased with it. If that were the case, I'd pull it immediately, but it's not.
Check out my fanfiction! Can we at least get proper permission to use it?
I want to make sure that we have absolute proof that we can do it.
It's not like we're excused from not having permission to used it.

Let's ask for explicit permission here. I'd rather not gamble about copyright law - I've heard that it can be a minefield.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe Dev Art link does not give a copyright notice like other devart pages.
Still, it's polite to ask.
Oh, I see. It's under a CC 3 license, like ours. Since we have ads, we should ask.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerActually, since "Noncommercial use" is covered by this site's license, it's not copyright infringement as long as we credit him.
Let's do so.
Note to self: Scout the page for licenses like these next time.

Nice pun there.
Too bad it's the full Deviantart image.
