[up][up][up]Hard to say. The titular Company are mercenaries in service of Evil Overlord (well, Overlady) and while the book doesn't shy too much from the atrocities they preform, I still get the feeling they are supposed to be sympathetic. This might have to do something with the fact that the books are narrated by the Company's Annalist.

I looked at the character page and saw mention of how their pet the dog moment was saving a little girl who got raped. That's, you know, kind of expected as a minimum level of human decency? Are we supposed to be glad that they didn't rape her themselves?

Maybe getting to sympathize with them takes some time?

Or later down the line, we find out one of the characters had their amputated rabbit kicked down the stairs and turned into jerky, and suddenly they become more likeable.

Either way, as long as the rest of the book is enjoyable/does what it sets out to do well, the festival of dicks can probably be stomached? Maybe even embraced!

[up][up]Unfortunately, probably yes. The Company commits some pretty bad things themselves but the narrator is always quick to excuse them (or not mention it at all) but then again he's decidedly unreliable being a member himself.

[up] The books are fairly interesting so I'll keep reading, even though it's very hard to root for the protagonists.

So I started to publish a story, in a Korean online novel site. The first chapter is getting some decent views, so I have my hopes.

I realized that one of the main characters is a kind of a bizarre mixture of a Mama's Boy and Yandere. Basically, the first chapter opens up with the war between the local lords and the king ending. The main character, second son of the leader of the rebel, says that he joined the war simply because a son cannot disobey his father.

The real reason is that he was kind of in love with the queen. He lost his mother pretty early on, and his father was a pretty close friend of the king. His own father was always demanding and dismissive of him, but the king and the queen were actually far more parental and loving towards him. In the case of the latter, she always wanted a son but couldn't give birth to one, so she treated him like her own son in a way.

So he got himself a mother figure...and he wanted to call her one, but couldn't do so for obvious reason. Then he learned that his father and the king once both fought for the queen's hand. So he figures; if the king is overthrown/killed and his father remarries her, the queen would be her mother, albeit not a biological one.

The short war ends with the the rebel's defeat, but the king not only spares the main character, he also puts him in charge of tracking and hunting down remaining rebel forces. He is so trusted that at the beginning of the story, he is a freaking duke (his father was a count), commander of the king's army, AND second in command to the realm. Oh, and the king wants him to marry the princess, making him basically the future king. He's only 29. He feels...appropriately burdened and guilty about all this.

Did I also mention that he is the greatest swordman in the history, capable of defeating over a thousand soldiers without a scratch because he wields an ice sword that can almost insta-freeze everything? Really, he has everything.

......and naturally, the only thing left for him is to lose them all, in cruelest ways possible.

I'm going to enjoy this. HARD. evil grin

Reading that I thought, "My little d Roy can't possibly be writing a wish fulfillment self insert fantasy this hard," but it looks like it'll shape up nicely.

Make sure you avoid any creepy romantic subtext with mom! Unless it's that kind of story. You sicko.

This initially started off as a Game of Thrones fanfic.

Naturally, there's going to be...no incest subtext whatsoever.

Yeah...

There's going to be a plenty of "You are not my mom/dad!" moment, though.

[up][up]Sounds like exciting stuff.

[up]Manly should become a metric, now. It really should.

I watched Tomorrowland. I loved the first half, but parts of the second made me feel uneasy. I can't discuss it without spoiling much but while it at least brings its message of hope for the future across, it also does it in a way that's both a bit too hamfised, and kind of makes me go "no".

So I wrote several chapters of that novel.

There are like six main characters, and one of them gets killed less than 20 chapters in, right after he comes across a massive secret, and it involves the throne and bastards.

So basically I was writing Ned Stark. Hmm.

...I need to watch season 5 ep 6 and 7.

Got a new job. I'll be working in a warehouse from 05:00-14:00 Monday-Friday starting tomorrow. Finally more cash!

Wait, I know the times are hard but are you sure you want to work in such a place? I mean aren't those places rather shady? Also, personally I would be a bit embarrassed to say that I work in a...

....

...Oh, a warehouse. Never mind then, carry on. Congratulations.

More seriously though, they are almost always shady. But depending on where exactly in the world you are they can be rather better.

I should hope the warehouse is shady. Working in a building so decrepit that the summer sun is blazing at you through holes in the roof sounds terrible.

I'm going to be packing food bags with 150 other students and full time workers for everyone who orders one in Stockholm.

Meaning if I order a food bag from Stockholm there's a 1/151 chance it will be personally packed by you?! How exciting!

I think I'm going to have to switch jobs. I've been really fucked around by covering someone's maternity leave and the situation is only going to get worse with the plans we have for upcoming months.

To make it worse, she promised to come in part time to help with the audit because that would just be too much for me alone. Last friday someone explained the current situation to her and she just said "fuck that, I won't come in for that" and I'm sitting here like... well... that kind of means I need your help even more.

The more she puts stuff off, the more it effects me. And I am doing her a massive favour here, so that really pisses me off. This job would be going fine if not for covering her maternity leave, I hate that that might make me need to leave. Cause right now I have to work late and weekends to still not cover everything.

I can't. Friday was the only day she was there, because she's on leave now, and everyone was stuck to her and fawning over her baby. So I couldn't bring it up or I would have f copped a lot of shit for it.

I see.

In that case... I think it's better if you either ask someone else for help, or talk to your boss about maybe getting a short vacation to spend a while away from the problems.

Otherwise... I don't know what to do.

Can you figure out a way to explain to her you need to drop the job?

Yeah, don't even try, if you say anything everyone will pin you as the asshole.

Best start looking for a new job, but not before creating as much mess for her to clean up later as you can get away without getting into trouble. evil grin

Well, any sort of break is out of the question because of the workload, I'd only make the situation worse for myself because I can't be covered.

I've asked my boss multiple times that they need to hire someone for this, but that went nowhere.

Part of the problem is the program being used by the person I'm covering for - it's an extremely shitty, niche program that only she knew how to use. I've been trained in it, but not very well, and everyone I've tried to train just doesn't get it.

There's no chance of hiring someone that knows how to use it because it's ridiculously niche and is worse at serving that niche than generic programs. Can't train a new employee because I'm already out of time.

And the support team for it won't speak with us on any issues, because they require us to prepay for support hours and it's an absurd ripoff (costs thousands of dollars, and they charge us for any hours they spend fixing THEIR mistakes) so I am completely on my own with this shit program.

Which is part of why I'm reluctant to leave. It would fuck them so hard since right now I'm the only person they can contact that can use the program that effects the entire business. They wouldn't even know how to train a new person for it.

But if I bring that up before I've decided to leave, I could shoot myself in the foot. Don't want to even discuss leaving while I'm undecided.

If the program that bad why the heck do they still keep it then?

Because that sounds to me like there is something fishy about either your bosses or whoever keeps it.
