Games that HAVE aged well:

Flower Fairy
As a counterpoint to this thread, I'd like to ask, what games do you feel HAVE aged well?

Firstly, I would like to say that the original Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games have barely aged to me, since they carry a great deal of artistic detail, great level design, and high speed that even games made today have trouble matching.

Some would argue that Sonic wasn't all that good in the first place.

Anyway, Master of Magic, Master of Orion 2, Civilization II, Railroad Tycoon... most strategy games.

Then there's any text adventure by Infocom, like Nord & Bert Couldn't Make Head Nor Tail Of It, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Planetfall, etc.

[up]Same could be said for any much-acclaimed game really. And guess what? It often is.

Symphony of the Night, Chrono Trigger, Vectorman, Ristar...quite a few.

  • Super Mario World, hands down. Though sprites might be a bit cheating.
  • Wind Waker will always look beautiful.
  • Freelancer looks a little clunky, but still A-OK.
  • Mischief Makers can't do much wrong, even after all this time. Seriously, I want to see more of that particular IP.
NCR Ranger
Chrono Trigger, Pokémon Gold and Silver, Super Metroid, the original Super Mario Bros., Fallout2 and Mario Tennis on the Gameboy Color.

Games that I expect to age well from current gen: Fallout: New Vegas, Portal2, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Bloody Roar. Especially the second game. Damn, that's some good fighting. Combos are fast and easy but the game will still tear apart button mashers.

Silent Bomber. Mostly because nothing else quite like it has bothered to show up.

Mega Man in general. Shoulda been called jump'n'shoot man!

Der Langrisser in another one of my inevitable plugs for that series.

The original Spyro the Dragon games are as fun and magical today as they where when they where first released, polygons be damned.

[up][up][up]That reminds me. As much as Wind Waker has aged well, Ōkami (original PS2 version, i mean) has aged even better.

Also same goes for Yoshi's Island.

[up][up]I was stuck with the Wii remake, so I wouldn't know about Ōkami. Agrred on Yoshi's Island, however.

[up]I guess you could play the PS3 port, which re-applies the paper filter that the PS2 version had, if I recall.

They took out the paper filter!?

That's... What?

I tried to go back further than the PS2 era, but yeah. Ōkami is absolutely brilliant and hasn't lost a drop of its' charm since release.

Recently, I've played Mike Tysons Punch Out, Final Fantasy IX, Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VI, and they've all aged extremely well.

Skies of Arcadia is also far less dated than I expected to be.

Hunter. Scholar. Gentlemen.
Gameplay-wise, I considered Deus Ex as holding up well by today's standards. Sure it is graphically unattractive and the voice acting has some occasional narm, but nonetheless it still holds up to me.

Then again, it was pretty much out in what is the equivalent Fifth-Generation gaming, so when it comes to gaming with 3D graphics, these sorts of graphics hardly age well though the gameplay can be capable of still holding up.

Continuing on, many of the sprite-based games during the SNES/Sega Genesis era still look as good today as they did on release.

Xenogears. I could leave it at that, but the game stands on not just only on its own merits but by the impact it can have on a player. I will never forget playing it.

Dark Messiahof Mightand Magic has held up incredibly well, other than faltering massively in the final chapter. The combat is wonderful and the options available to the player still make successive playthroughs so fun.

Ridley's had enough of this.
Agreed with Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, and Wind Waker.

I like Wind Waker better than the most recent one, Skyward Sword, in fact. Not that it's bad, I just like WW better.

Half-Life 2: While some areas are a little clunky, the game is still one of the best FPS out there.

I would say Portal and Team Fortress 2, but I don't know if coming out in 2007 counts as "old"

Not to mention Team Fortress 2 still experiences constant updates and new features.

I know this was mentioned in the Games That Haven't Aged Well thread, but I think the original Half-Life is still a blast to play through. Same goes for its expansions— namely Opposing Force. I still play through them now and then.

Suikoden 1 (Haven't played the second yet) and Wild ARMs 1/2 have all aged pretty well, except for the sub-par translations.

RollerCoaster Tycoon, the later entries to Mega Man Battle Network, and Sonic 2.

Pokémon Gold and Silver

I strongly disagree with this. Especially when I look at it next to HeartGold and SoulSilver.
