First one seems fine to me. I'm not a fan of paneled page images unless it's absolutely necessary, and I don't think it is here.

First panel is fine on its own. The second panel with the reaction really lessens it, in my opinion.

I'd go with the single panel. The parental reaction of being happy about what they're seeing is so uncommon as to be a subversion, I'd say.
