So, since Will mentioned working with cellist Tina Guo, does that mean Octavia will have a significant roll? It is a background pony episode after all. It's not too hard of a stretch to imagine he composed some cello pieces to use for her.
edit: I think this pretty much answered my question.

"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkFuck yeah!
Fridge Logic moment: There are about a 3rd of the Equestrian pony population composed of unicorns, which means they all have magic with apparently no rules until the show reveals more and more. So I would assume there are incredible ruling restrictions over how they can use them! Anyone can just find a stick in a desert and build and entire cult with it by convincing others that it's a wand. If these restrictions were in place, that village wouldn't exist because Starlight would be prohibited for abusing her power. Hell, who KNOWS that it's possible to do that with your horn? I didn't even know Cutie Marks can be manipulated.

Starlight did something that even Twilight didn't know was even possible till now. Hard to regulate stuff you aren't aware of.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.It also might be because no other unicorn can do that, or at least very few can. You probably have to be incredibly powerful to manipulate a cutie mark, so those who can are probably very few, very far between and may mostly be benign.

"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkMost unicorns only know a few spells related to their talent. Twilight is highly unusual.
I just think that with a world that's apparently hundreds or thousands of years old in its recorded history, they would have massive records of how magic works by this point and yet Twilight is still discovering spells that apparently no pony else was aware of? They all seem very simple in their concept. Had Starswirl or Meadowbrook discovered them before this? There are entire libraries of these spells and no one even knew you could take Cutie Marks off and replace them with equal signs?

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of knowledge has been lost at varies points in time due to cataclysms, collapses, and the like.
Three words related to episode 100: ELECTRIC CELLO DUBSTEP.
Discuss.
Inb4 square-off with DJ Pon 3. Calling it now.
Octavia is awesome and apparently not a snob. Bestpony just got bester.
Disgusting.

Well, Octavia is apparently collaborating with Vinyl Scratch, so that's totally awesome best news.
Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.I like Octavia and I like Vinyl, but I don't like dubstep. Still, poor musical choices aren't enough to keep me from being excited.
I'm not as enthused about the BG pony stuff as I am the the concept of the episode itself. (That being Cranky and Matilda's wedding.)
"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkRegarding the unicorn magic thing, I seriously doubt that the vast majority of unicorns magic that powerful. The star in Starlight's CM is similar to Twilight's implying that magic is part of her special talent. I doubt that most unicorns would be able to brainwash a town with a random stick.
Reaction Image RepositoryKnowledge gets accumulated as it can be recorded and learned by later generations and then added to. Spells don't work like that in this show. You normally need an affinity for the spell to learn it, in which case it normally comes naturally to you. Only a few unicorns study extra spells. They are not knowledge, but abilities. People don't gain the abilities of Olympic athletes by reading about them. For most unicorns, that's the way it is. Twilight is unusual in this regard. As such, there would be a similar number of spells to the number of unicorns who have ever been born. But most aren't recorded and most that are recorded aren't studied, because the ability to replicate them is highly unusual.
EDIT:This. If you want to know what a normal unicorn is capable of, think Rarity, nt Twilight. Are some unicorns ludicrously OP? Sure. But that's only a minority.

Yeah, I think an important thing to remember is that the mane cast members are all exceptional. Yeah, Twilight is uber-powerful, and Rarity's DEX score is probably sky-high, but on the flipside, you have ponies like Sparkler, who couldn't even get a peanut butter jar open in MMDW. For most unicorns, TK probably isn't much more powerful than moving things manually; it just has slightly more versatility.
I mean, in "Magic Duel" Twilight juggling a dozen animals was apparently impressive enough that it was worth showing off to foreign dignitaries. If that's an example of a skill that most unicorns could do, I doubt they'd bother.
Reaction Image RepositoryElectric cello dubstep sounds awesome! And I don't even like dubstep!
Trust you? The only person I can trust is myself. If magic is treated as a science, then it is very likely that not all the magic has been discovered yet, think of it like Astrophysics, we know gravity and orbits and stuff, but we sill do not know how big the universe is. There is still uncharted territory. Likewise scientists can use physics and engineering to achieve a desired effect, but they need to find the variables. Likewise, a unicorn can make a new spell, but he has to find out the variables of the spells effects and the reaction the target has.
I don't know if that's the best comparison. Science is the same for everybody and it's only a matter of how much info you can absorb. I'd say that learning magic is more like learning a song on an instrument. The compositions and theory get more complex, and that can all be learned, but even if you have the music in front of you, it still relies on you having the skill and physical ability to actually play it. Starlight has had a lot of practice on one particular spell, whereas Twilight is the equivalent of one of those people who can pick up just about any instrument and figure it out fairly easily.

Episode 97 will be airing in May 2. That means 98 could be released May 9, and 99 May 16... Yeah that would be a three week gap if they do that.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.
